Cal Women Only Have 1 Dual Meet Scheduled for Spring Semester

"Berkeley, California The defending NCAA Champion Cal women's swimming and diving team has announced their schedule for the 2015-2016 season, showing a changing in their usual schedule. They have announced that they will only be competing in one meet in the spring semester before the Pac-12 Championships, an unusual pattern for them (or anybody). The Golden Bears will host three dual meets, one of which will be their final meet of the regular season against Bob Bowman's Arizona State Sun Devils (Jan. 23)."

lmao @ the above (alarmist) SwimSwam article :rollinglaugh: - heck Teri may have earned an enviable reputation for treading the road less travelled, but even our head coach wouldn't flaunt convention completely by not testing the team at all against the Furd, Trojans, Bruins & Wildcats before NCAAs :p

Here's what I reckon the Spring dual schedule will end up looking like:

Cierra Runge to Transfer to Wisconsin After Olympics

While Teri McKeever's squad did win the 2016 title, this means that by the time the 2016-2017 season rolls around, the Golden Bears will have lost at least 249.5 out of their 327 individual points from last year's NCAA Championship meet to a combination of graduations, transfers, and Missy Franklin turning pro. That means the squad will have to rebuild in a hurry in the final year of eligibility of its world-class seniors Liz Pelton and Rachel Bootsma, as well as emerging sprint star Farida Osman.

Will be interesting to see the froskies in action in SLO this weekend. Betting on Baker over Li for the overall title, but very interested to compare Baker to Marina to Maija in the 100 Breast. Bilquist won't be 100% for at least another month, so curious to see how many events she swims. Seliskar should clean up on the men's side.

Yup can't wait - even though there's no live video or results of the swimming pentathlon commencing @ 11 am today down at San Luis Obispo.

Really early in the season and not a typical NCAA format, so wouldn't be expecting any exceptional times...but naturally this format where all 4 strokes are competed in by everyone and contributes to the final placing will favour IM'ers.

Celina had impressed by winning the last 2 competitions, earning bragging rights as the Cal Poly Queen of the Pool (besting even a "recovering from her back spasms" Missy last season, and a mite surprisingly, in their frosh year), but I'd go with BD in reckoning that Kathleen will have Celina's number this time round!

Very excited to observe the freshies in action (if from the results only lol) - not just the Dream Team but also Val, Madi & Jenna! Let's see how Amy is faring in her ongoing recovery, and whether Kathleen will be our medley relay breast saviour whom everyone around here's praying for (well, until we hopefully reel in a specialist like Nikol down the road)

Wouldn't surprise me entirely if Katie does fairly well here, since her fly & free prowess are tops as we all know, and I have a feeling that her back & breast speed aren't completely absent too...of course KT isn't quite as dominant in the little pool as in long course, but she's not going to be a pushover either

Look forward to seeing the men's team compete as well. As mentioned, Andrew should do very well here!

Weitzeil's the only one who deferred, but she's hanging out with the team in SLO this weekend. Bears added Auburn sprint transfer Valerie Hull to help replace Abbey this season. Baker, McLaughlin, and Bilquist all enrolled, but Bilquist is coming off an injury which will slow her up first semester. Two other frosh Jenna Campbell and Madi Hurst. Campbell is from Palo Alto and has a lot of upside.

Cierra Runge bailed on the Bears. Will train at ASU this season with her former club coach and swim for Wisconsin next season.

Celina Li Defends Her Crown

Cal Junior Claims Queen of the Pool Title for Third Year in a Row

By Cal Athletics on Fri, September 25, 2015

SAN LUIS OBISPO Showing she once again ranks among Cal royalty, junior Celina Li captured her third consecutive the Queen of the Pool title at the Golden Bears' season-opening meet Friday at Cal Poly.

The unique competition, featuring swimmers from Cal and Cal Poly, combines 100-yard times from five races 100-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard individual medley to determine an overall winner.

Li placed first with a time of 4:47.80, just edging out senior Kelly Naze, who was clocked in 4:48.14. Senior Elizabeth Pelton was third in 4:50.69, followed by freshman Amy Bilquist in 4:52.41 and senior Rachel Bootsma in 4:54.37.

Five different Bears won individual races with freshman Katie McLaughlin first in the 100 fly (54.81), Bootsma winning the 100 back (56.00), Marina Garcia taking the 100 breast (1:04.11), Bilquist claiming the 100 free (51.26) and Li prevailing in the 100 IM (57.12).

Cal returns to action Oct. 9 and 10 when the Bears travel for back-to-back dual meets at Washington State. Cal then hosts a pair of duals at Spieker Aquatics Complex with Utah visiting Thursday, Oct. 15 (5 p.m.) and San Jose State making the short trip Friday, Oct. 30 (2 p.m.). Admission to Cal home meets is free.

Indiana's Brooklynn Snodgrass will redshirt this season to prepare for the Canadian Olympic Trials. Increases the chance that Bootsma wins the 100 Back for the third time. Bears are pretty lucky that Noemie Thomas isn't taking a blueshirt. Odd that LSJU's Simone Manuel didn't travel or swim vs WSU last week. Went to Hawaii with the team last month, so probably not redshirting.

The Brooklynn Snodgrass news isn't entirely unexpected and will be felt by Indiana @ NCAAs, but fortunately for Looze & his team, IU will be massively bolstered with incoming freshman breaststroke aces Lilly King & Miranda Tucker who both have the potential to help with the scoring at the big dance.

http://swimswam.com/former-ncaa-champ-brooklynn-snodgrass-redshirting-for-indiana-hoosiers/

Really says something about the coaches, team members and uni, when a team (:bear so populated by potential Olympians is entering this pre-Olympic year virtually intact :cheer Especially when it comes to Internationals, like Noemie, Marina & Farida, considering that their Oly qualifying trials take place immediately or soon after the NCAA championships.

Then we have the Dream Class (Abbey, Katie, Amy, Kathleen), with just Abbey deferring. Great planning on Teri's part imo with her inclusion of a couple of big LCM meets (Arena Pro Series) in the first half of this season where our Olympic hopefuls can get a measure of how they are progressing in the run up to Rio. Doesn't hurt either that one can get NCAA qualifying cuts from long course swims in this Olympic year.

Yes, not going to ignore Cierra's pending transfer which will significantly impact our chances of walking away with yet another National title this year and the following ones, unless Bears can recruit a distance prospect at or near Cierra's level.

But we still have a pretty darn fine squad in spite of Cierra's departure (and the loss of Missy + that of a strong senior class) - Liz & Boots, Farida, our "alpha cubs" , amongst a cast of too many to all be listed here!

UGA will be hurting from the departure of their seniors, Chantal's redshirt and a less than stellar 2015 recruiting season (by their elevated standards).

LSJU will surely be the biggest threat in March (and going forward - Katie Ledecky!), as they haven't graduated a ton of scoring points, but instead smartly filled some significant holes in their lineup with incoming IM & distance stars Ella Eastin, Kim Williams & Leah Sevens, and let's not forget their 2014 Dream Team ...would be super news for us if Simone is indeed deferring, but realistically she was probably just sick at the WSU meet!

I really want to go in there and feel how I used to feel, when I used to travel and go to these big meets — walk on deck with my head held high, and really just feel like I can do anything. USC's Kendyl Stewart, Dylan Carter Sitting Out NCAA Season In Olympic Preparation

A pair of University of Southern California All-Americans will be sitting out of the coming NCAA season in order to prepare for the 2016 Olympic year: American Kendyl Stewart and Trinidad & Tobago's Dylan Carter.

Stewart was the third-place finisher in the NCAA's 100 fly a year ago, and one of four swimmers to break 51 seconds in the final. She was also a key relay leg, swimming 4 out of 5 relay events and helping USC finish inside the top 10 in all four.

But Stewart was also the 2014 U.S. National Champ in the long course 50 and 100 fly races, and came home from this summer's World Championships in Kazan, Russia with a silver medal from the mixed 4100 medley relay, helping the team break the world record in prelims before giving way to teammate Katie McLaughlin for the final.

Stewart would be a senior this year, but will take an Olympic redshirt season, sitting out of the NCAA calendar to prepare for long course swimming and the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials in June and July.

#NationalTeamNewbie: Q&A With Amy Bilquist

By Katlynn Emaus, Swimming World College Intern

Sprint superstar Amy Bilquist is a freshman at University of California, Berkeley. Eighteen-year-old Bilquist had a phenomenal summer, placing as high as 6th in the 50 freestyle at the Phillips 66 National Championships in August. Bilquist has the sixth fastest time in the country (25.26) trailing big names like Simone Manuel, Natalie Coughlin, Madison Kennedy, Amanda Weir, and Kelsi Worrell.

Bilquist recently took time to talk swimming with Swimming World

SW: What is your swimming background?

I started competitive swimming at the age of four. I swam for Westside Silver Fins in Arizona until I was 15 and then I swam for Scottsdale Aquatic Club until I was 16 and moved to Indiana. My last two years on club I swam for Carmel Swim Club under Chris Plumb and Ian Murray. I swam my freshman and sophomore years of high school for Verrado High School and my junior and senior years for Carmel High School. I now swim for the University of California, Berkeley.

SW: Why did you decide to stick with swimming?

I have kept swimming for so long because I honestly love working hard and being in the water. I was a multi-sport athlete until my junior year of high school (balancing volleyball and swimming) so it was nice to see a different sport while swimming. I chose to stick with swimming because it is a part of me. Swimming was always there no matter if my day was good or bad.

SW: What events do you swim?

I typically swim the 50, 100 free and 100 back and sometimes the 200 free and 200 back.

SW: What is your favorite event and why do you like it above all the rest?

I think my favorite event is the 50 free because it is too short to think too much about. You just dive in and give it everything you have.

SW: What do you like most about swimming?

My favorite thing about swimming is pushing yourself, whether in a workout or a race, to the uncomfortable point and choosing to push past the pain and finding out what you are truly capable of.

SW: What is your fondest swimming memory?

My fondest swimming memory was getting my first Trials cut in the 200 back at the 2012 Austin Grand Prix. I was 14 and was scratched into the C final and was so excited to get the second chance to swim. I can remember touching the wall and looking up at my time that was just under the cut and knowing that I was going to be able to swim with the best of the best at Trials that summer.

SW: What has swimming taught you in the long run?

Swimming has taught me the importance of determination and perseverance through the hard things in life. Things aren't always going to go the way you want them to go, but figuring out how to overcome these obstacles is something swimming has taught me and that has translated into my life outside of the sport.

SW: When was a time that you had to overcome the greatest adversity in the sport and what did you take away from it?

This summer I had multiple stress fractures in my legs and I was very restricted on what I could do in the water. It is so frustrating not being able to do something as simple as a flip turn or even just pushing off the wall. There were so many times when I just wanted to quit because I felt so upset that i couldn't be doing the things I wanted to be doing, but my family, teammates, and coaches were there to lift me up. I learned that no matter how frustrating or large an obstacle is if you just take it day by day instead of all at once you can manage whatever is thrown your way.

SW: What is your favorite quote?

"No pressure, no diamonds."

SW: Favorite pump up song?

***Flawless Beyonce

SW: What is your favorite food?

{Preliminary impressions from just eyeballing the stats here: http://www.wsucougars.com//ViewContent.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=30400&CONTENT_ID=1460078 }

Bears leading 139-66 after 11 events...

Teri testing everyone with a bunch of off events, but Dream Class 2015 is swimming exceptionally well early on in the season.

Both Amy (54.89, 100 Bk individual, also a pool record!) & Kathleen (54.96, 400 Medley Relay leadoff) earned NCAA 'B' cuts in the 100 Back. Katie McL had a nice 1:49.06 split from a flying start in the 800 Free Relay. Freshies won 5 of the 9 individual events!

Noemie's fly leg in the 400 Medley Relay (53.34) was also wickedly fast.

Cal A & B teams also broke the pool record in the 400 Medley Relay, and the A team in the 800 Free Relay.

PULLMAN, Wash. – Freshmen Amy Bilquist, Katie McLaughlin and Kathleen Baker combined to win five individual events and help in a pair of relay victories to lead Cal to a 139-66 edge over Washington State after the first 11 events of a two-day dual meet. Racing will resume at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The reigning NCAA champion Golden Bears set three Gibb Pool records in their opening dual of the season. Baker, junior Marina Garcia, sophomore Noemie Thomas and junior Farida Osman started off with a new mark in the 400-yard medley relay, finishing in 3:43.74. In the final event of the evening, junior Celina Li, McLaughlin, freshman Jenna Campbell and senior Elizabeth Pelton set the 800 free relay pool record in 7:24.36. In between, Bilquist covered the 100 backstroke in a record 54.89.

Bilquist also captured the 200 free in 1:51.13, while McLaughlin claimed the 50 free (23.73) and 100 free (50.91), and Baker the 400 individual medley (4:22.35).

Other winning times came from senior Kelly Naze in the 1000 free (10:09.34), Osman in the 100 fly (54.73) and Pelton in the 500 free (5:00.74).

Cal returns to Berkeley for its home opener next week, hosting Utah Thursday at 5 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

Bears are in heavy training and they still set 3 pool records. Doesn't bode well for WSU staying in PAC-12 swimming for the long haul.

Interesting events for Baker: back leg on the A medley relay, 400 IM, no 100 Breast. Thought her NCAA program would be 800 Free Relay, 200 IM, 400 Medley (breast), 200 Medley (breast), 100 Breast, 200 Back, and 400 Free Relay. She's so versatile that Teri may cycle her through as many events as possible to maximize potential B cuts, and go for seeds at PAC-12s.

Bilquist is still not 100% physically and is still swimming well. A gamer with huge upside. Jenna Campbell's role is as expected-middle distance focus (200/500) with 800 relay potential down the line. Madi Hurst looks like an IMer with breast legs in dual meet medley relays.

Freshmen trio record 7 wins for Cal women in first night in WSU dual

Katie McLaughlin won three events and was part of a record setting relay for the Cal Bears against Washington State

The defending NCAA champion Cal women journeyed up to Pullman, Washington to kick off their 2015-16 dual-meet season last night against the Washington State Cougars. The two squads competed in the first 11 events of a two-day meet, with the Bears holding a strong lead of 139-66 after Friday's session.

The Bears weren't particularly fast (Teri McKeever's teams rarely swim well in October historically), but they did get big contributions from three members of our #1 recruiting class: Kathleen Baker, Amy Bilquist, and Katie McLaughlin, who combined for five individual wins, a pair of relay swims, and three new Gibb Pool records. Baker was the first to get her name on the board, joined by Marina Garcia, Noemie Thomas, and Farida Osman in a runaway victory that set a new mark in the 400 medley relay (3:43.74). The versatile SwimMAC freshman would later take the 400 IM in 4:22.35.

Bilquist set the only individual standard of the meet in the 100 backstroke, where she bettered the field by more than two seconds to win in 54.89, a tenth under the old pool record. The Indiana native earlier took the 200 free in 1:51.13.

McLaughlin, a World Championship gold medalist last summer on the 800 free relay, recorded the fastest leg (1:49.06) in that event last night to close the Friday session in 7:24.36. She doubled up earlier in the session, winning the 50 (23.73) and 100 freestyles (50.91) in a nice display of early-season speed for the mid-distance star.

Joining McLaughlin on that 800 free relay was Elizabeth Pelton (1:49.95 anchor split to put away a Washington State squad that had pulled within a second after 600 yards), who, in her second meet since undergoing hand surgery this summer, also won the 500 freestyle. Other event winners for Cal were Kelly Naze in the 1000 free (10:09.34) and Farida Osman in the 100 fly (54.73).

The Cougars scored a nice 1-2 finish in the 100 breaststroke to close out the individual events, thanks to Presley Wetterstrom (1:04.62) and Frederikke Hall (1:04.66). Addisynn Bursch (second place finishes in the 50 free, 100 free, and 800 free relay) and Elise Locke (second place in the 800 free relay, and a solid 55.69 100 fly) also had strong sessions for Washington State.

Competition resumes this morning at 10 A.M. Pacific.
