Not surprised that Farida's still swimming, but surprised Marina is still swimming. Thought she would retire after the college season ended.
Same here. Thought when she didn't try out for the Spanish Olympic team, I assume the NCAA's would be her last meet.

Not sure bout the last Olympics, but perhaps timing was also a factor when it comes to Marina not having participated @ 2017 Spanish Worlds Trials, which was held very shortly after 2017 NCAAs...similar situation for Noemie re her Canadian Trials (and perhaps taking a well-deserved post-Rio break in Thomas' case)?

Judging from the very competitive in-season long course times that Marina has busted out this year, reckon her chances of making Team Espana for Budapest would have been very favourable had that been her focussed goal. Not that I'm really complaining lol when it seems that Marina has prioritised helping her :bear: sisters in her final NCAA season above repping her country...

Still swimming at an elite international level, judging from Marina's foray into the 2017 Mare Nostrum tour this week:

Monaco (10-11 June) - Marina made the A final in both the 200m & 100m Breast, also ventured into the 50m Breast sprints!

Barcelona (13-14 June) - Not sure what "BAJ" means...DQ, DNS - or ??

Golden Medals: Status updates of all 30 Cal Athletics programs

Now that the 2016-17 school year is officially over, it's time to take a look at the trajectories of all 30 Cal Athletics programs.

Perennial national championship contenders

Cal Women's Swimming (2nd place at the NCAA) - steady

3x NCAA champion Kathleen Baker will be back for the Bears in her junior season along side fellow Calympian in Abbey Weitzeil and likely future Calympians in Amy Bilquist and Katie McLaughlin. While Stanford may be hard to beat if Katie Ledeckey and Simone Manuel don't turn pro, Cal will stay in the mix and challenge for the national title under coach Teri McKeever, even though she had lost both Natalie Coughlin and Missy Franklin from her pro group to the men's side in recent years (this is more of a compliment for Durden than a blemish for McKeever, in my opinion).

Bears Earn Team, Individual Scholar All-America Honors

6/21/2017 2:15 PM | By: Cal Athletics

Kristen Vredeveld earned CSCAA Scholar All-America honors for the fourth time

BERKELEY - Another standout season both in the pool and in the classroom earned the Cal women's swimming and diving team national recognition Wednesday as the Golden Bears received distinction as a Scholar All-America Team and nine Bears were honored individually as Scholar All-Americans by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America.

A longtime commitment to scholastic excellence continued for head coach Teri McKeever's squad as the Bears received their second Scholar All-America team award for the 2016-17 school year, adding it to the same honor earned after the fall semester.

Four Bears received recognition as first team honorees, a distinction met by compiling a GPA of 3.50 or higher and participating at the NCAA Championships meet. Those earning first team honors are:

Amy Bilquist
Valerie Hull
Noemie Thomas
Kristen Vredeveld

In addition, five more Bears earned honorable mention for also carrying a 3.50 GPA and either achieving an NCAA "B" time standard or competing at the NCAA zone diving meet. Swimmers receiving honorable mention are:

Jenna Campbell
Anina Lund
Courtney Mykkanen
Maija Roses
Hayden Tavoda

Wednesday's academic honors added to another great all-around season for the Bears. As a team, the Bears finished second in the country at the 2017 NCAA Championships the ninth year in a row they have placed among the top three.

Wasn't exactly sure in which thread to post this, but saw this on SwimSwam just now. Is he moving? Statements somewhat give that impression. Hope this bodes well still for the program (although great news still with the early recruits!)

SARAH DUNLEAVY JOINS WOMEN'S SWIM STAFF

"I am truly honored to become a part of the Golden Bear family," Dunleavy said. "I would like to thank Coach McKeever and the administration at Cal for giving me this amazing opportunity. Excellence is an expectation at Cal, and I feel that everyone I've met on campus shows a sincere concern for the well-being of each student-athlete, helping them achieve at the highest levels in the pool, in the classroom and beyond their athletic careers. Coach McKeever has undeniable experience and knowledge of the sport, and I am eager to get to work with a team that boasts such a great tradition of success."
