With the new season underway, top times lists turn over meaning you have to look back / look forward to getting a sense of what the season looks like. Here's a quick and definitely unofficial look at the returning/incoming Top 50 look like. Stanford leads the way with seven swimmers ranked in the top eight in fifteen different events. Cal features four swimmers ranked in the top eight across ten different events.

RANK TEAM PTS
1 Stanford 307
2 Texas A&M 183
3 Calilfornia 176
4 Virginia 114
5 Georgia 113
6 Michigan 100
7 Southern Cal 98
8 Indiana 97
9 Tennessee 81
10 Wisconsin 80

This is a dumb list because Abbey is not ranked in either the 50 or 100 Free.

Well goes without saying that none of these pre/early season rankings really have that much meaning, but guess it's human nature to always compare and pit one against the others lol

Here's another list, this time of individuals. Obviously I'm unabashedly biased in taking exception to Swimming World's inexplicable exclusion of Amy & Thleen (preferring Alexia Zevnik & Olivia Smoliga as the backstrokers of note), also their favouring Louise Hansson over Katie McL & Noemie in the butterfly dept even if our pair of Bears did admittedly receive a very brief mention...then there's the Top 3 being all furdettes...alright Ledecky prob deserves to be #1, still... :p

Their choices are actually quite solid as everyone on the list is a veritable stud, but I personally feel that our passed-over :bear:s deserve a nod of recognition at the very least...it's also a bit too early anyway to assume that Liliana & Louise will adapt quickly & smoothly to the SCY format (although Hansson did very well @ her first US collegiate swim meet back in Sept)

10 Women to Watch this College Season

1. Katie Ledecky: 200/500/1650 Free Stanford

2. Simone Manuel: 50/100/200 Free Stanford

3. Ella Eastin: 200/400 IM, 200 Fly Stanford

4. Abbey Weitzeil: 50/100/200 Free Cal

Weitzeil deferred her enrollment at Cal in preparation for the Olympic Trials, which paid off with a trip to Rio. Weitzeil is the Golden Bears' answer to Manuel in the sprints, where she holds the American record in the 50 (21.12) and was the former record holder in the 100 (46.29). Weitzeil will be the next in a long line of young stars to descend upon Berkeley that has included Missy Franklin, Liz Pelton, Rachel Bootsma, and Natalie Coughlin. The Canyons Aquatic Club product has also shown extension to the 200 (1:43.25), meaning she should play a vital role on all of Cal's relays in March.

5. Farida Osman: 50/100 Free, 100 Fly Cal

Along with Weitzeil, Osman provides a sensational pair of bookends for the Cal sprint relays. Osman and her new training partner will be one of several women this season looking to go sub 21 in the 50 freestyle for the first time. An Olympian and former World Championship finalist in the 50 butterfly for her native Egypt, Osman will also play an important role in a loaded Bears fly group that includes Katie McLaughlin and Canadian Olympian Noemie Thomas.

6. Lilly King: 100/200 Breast Indiana

7. Olivia Smoliga: 100 Back, 50/100 Free Georgia

8. Alexia Zevnik: 100/200 Back, relays NC State

9. Liliana Szilagyi: 100/200 fly, 200 free Florida (at midseason)

10. Louise Hansson: 100/200 free, 100 fly, 200 IM USC

Brilliant find there, beaverbear, I humbly prostrate myself before your internet sleuthing wizardry lol - sooo relieved for this confirmation of Maddie as a true blue & golden :bear:!!!

btw, not sure the lighting scheme used this year is all that desirable - the higher position of the main lights tends to throw some rather unflattering shadows esp under & around everyone's eyes, cheeks, dimples & chins...yes perhaps a bit more of an artsy effect was achieved by revealing an increased dimensional rendition as well as impart more highlights to the hair than your standard/safe "2 umbrellas at the corners" flat-lighting setup, but IMO the corresponding shadows, hot spots & increased contrast don't really flatter portraits esp of women...jmo, of course lol

Haha but yes the redo is def an improvement as the "baggy eyes" and "gaunt look" have all but evaporated with the flatter lighting now (aka safe/generic setup with 2 main lights at the corners/sides with an elevated hair light from one side)...still a bit of a hot spot at the cheeks etc but that can always be addressed via Photoshop! Hopefully they won't take their sweet time updating the mug shots on the roster page like they seem to be doing with the men... :p

However I personally find outdoor portraits shot in natural lighting to be more appealing in most cases, such as the latest group pose here from Keeks, Coco & Madds (the composition is quite good here too, not the usual "place everyone dead centre"

Hey beaverbear - which team will you be cheering more for here, eh eh?? :p (assuming that you're currently based in Oregon, that is)

Not too bad of a writeup below, but IMHO may come off as taking on a rather condescending tone that unnecessarily belittles our opponents, e.g. "Last week, Cal decimated Cal Poly", "these Bears, whose talent and depth consistently makes them one of the best swim teams in the nation, are only racing against themselves", "not swimming full throttle is still good enough to beat the competition", "But a competitive environment isn't very competitive if one is miles or in swimming terms, seconds ahead of the competition", "Cal's swim team is on another level", etc.

Contrast the above with Coach Walsh's statements that focusses on "fun", "excitement", with the emphasis that it's just the start of the season with the main goal of getting the freshies acquainted with the team and the training, working on the fundamentals & details in preparation for a busy season ahead...

Just my two pennies...

Cal women's swim travels north to take on Oregon State

By Jeffrey Liu | Staff

The Cal women's swim and dive team will make the long trek northward to Oregon this Friday, where it will face Oregon State University for the Pac-12 opener. This meet is the first traditional swim meet of the season for the Bears and just their second meet overall.

Last week, Cal decimated Cal Poly in their annual Queen of the Pool meet. In that meet, two-time Olympic medalist Kathleen Baker posted the fastest combined time over five events, overtaking teammate and three-time reigning champ Celina Li for the title of Queen.

"It was a lot of fun to see our newcomers race,"said assistant coach Ian Walsh. "We had a great team dynamic and we really had a lot of fun getting out there to race at Cal Poly."

As is usually the case early in the season, the Bears are focusing on fine-tuning fundamentals rather than posting the fastest times possible. For Olympians like Baker and Abbey Weitzeil, not swimming full throttle is still good enough to beat the competition as they demonstrated last weekend. Weitzeil will be competing in what will be her first of many dual meets for the Bears.

It seems as though these Bears, whose talent and depth consistently makes them one of the best swim teams in the nation, are only racing against themselves. Fundamentals are worked on in practice and applied in competitive environments. But a competitive environment isn't very competitive if one is miles or in swimming terms, seconds ahead of the competition.

"We're just working on the details, getting our freshmen acclimated with the team," Walsh said. "Just getting the team together and ready for a great upcoming season, and we're really excited to visit Oregon State.

The Beavers will surely try their best to push the Bears. But they'll have to put up a better showing than they did last weekend, as OSU lost to both Utah and BYU in a tri-meet by scores of 157-96 and 178-83, respectively.

The Beavers have a new head coach at the helm this season, hiring Jennifer Buffin to replace previous head coach Larry Liebowitz. Buffin had previously been the associate head coach of Hawaii's men's and women's swim and dive teams since 2006, teams that captured two conference titles during her tenure. She'll hope to carry over that success to OSU.

Buffin does have some promising pieces to work with. Felicia Anderson looks to build off of her promising start after winning the first event of her collegiate career last week in the 100-yard backstroke. Czsarina Isleta swam the 200-yard breastroke in 2:26.03, good for third place last week.

Still, Cal's swim team is on another level. The Bears return key swimmers such as Amy Bilquist, Katie McLaughlin and Li, all of who contributed greatly to Cal's NCAA third place finish last season. Throw in a couple of Olympians in Baker and Weitzeil, and the Bears will prove very difficult to defeat.

I wish I were back on the West Coast! It's a different beaver reference.

Something I just realized is that Oregon State's new assistant coach is Mike Wong, who was a volunteer assistant coach with our men's team last year. Remember all those trips the pro team took to the Orlando Pro Swim Series and other places that were completely disparate from the college team at Pac-12s, etc.? Yep, Mike Wong went along with them. (He was also the coach that accompanied Natalie Coughlin at Olympic Trials, on the night of the devastating 100m back for her.) Really a thankless task for which he should be given some more credit. Let's wish him and Oregon State the best of luck this year.

As opined earlier, it's indeed an improvement over ISI's original run of studio portraits...but to be frank & needlessly critical lol, not really a fan of the twin front lights at the corner + hair light setup.

Less chances of messing up certainly, but I'd personally gone with a super massive softbox as the main light, using reflectors & fill lights as appropriate to fill in the shadows but at the same time retain a modicum of controlled shading for dimensionality & interest...would cast a much softer light that wraps around the face for a flattering look which downplays skin imperfections & such (i.e. won't have to resort to Photoshop as much for touch-up editing), whilst throwing much more attractive catchlights in the subject's eyes in the process...but hey, what do I know... :p

Alright, from a cursory eyeballing of the results sheets...

No Abbey, Kathleen, Noemie, Anina, Maija, Madi or Alexa.

Interesting configurations being tested in the 400 medley relay... B team had Courtney on breast, A team had Amy on fly, C team had Jenna also on fly.

Chenoa's winning time of 10:02.12 in the 1000 free was solid, she even put up the 2nd fastest 200 breast (2:20.32) though didn't count for points as it was exhibition.

Courtney's 55.27 pretty nice (PB is 53.95), coming in 2nd behind Amy's 54.07 in the 100 back.

Marina OK with her 1:04.39 win in the 100 breast (Keaton 3rd in 1:05.64), though she was outsplit by Celina in the breast leg of the medley relay by over half a sec. Did better in her better event (200 breast), taking 1st in 2:18.09.

Maddie (22.96) close behind Farida (22.83) in the 50 free, but reversed roles in winning the 100 fly in 54.55, just off an NCAA B cut (Farida went 54.58, Katie 54.63, both exhibitioned).

Amy easily takes the 200 back with her 1:56.21. Keaton had the 2nd fastest time of 2:01.37, but it was an exhibition swim...Blovad did win the 200 IM in 2:04.63, with Chenoa just behind @ 2:04.90 (exhibition).

200 free relay. Amy (22.30), Farida (22.31), Maddie (22.71), Val (22.80) - flying starts. Leadoffs - Katie (23.69), KV (23.83).

Of the freshies, Maddie & Chenoa very promising performances as sort of expected, with Keaton looking good as well (her versatility in quite a few events will come in handy!). Courtney did pretty nicely too actually.

Katie sort of still on the mend time-wise, not quite there yet in terms of her elite top level but still quite fast. Jaz will need more work but looks to be turning things around from last season.

It's all still very early in the season this being the very first dual meet...so in spite of all my apparent focus on times & such here, doesn't really mean all that much in the overall scheme of things. Everyone should be swimming tired right now as they start to build the base & endurance which will (hopefully) pay off at the big end-of-season taper meet(s). But these duals do give the coaches a chance to try different configurations and to assess how the new members will fit in various roles, also to see who has the drive & desire to fight thru the fatigue & competition to try to get their hands on the wall first...

Prob missed a lot of details & trends in this quickie browse thru, sorry!

Forgive me, Oski, but my longest love in sports has been the SF Giants. Watching the last two games have spanned the entire spectrum of emotions. Mets should have felt great about their chances when their ace took a no hitter into the 7th. Same with the Giants with Cueto giving up 1 run in 8 innings.

All you can ask for is that Teri builds a team that represents the University well and scores between 420 and 480 at NCAAs. Won't always guarantee a win, but nobody should complain about those outcomes.

Bummer for Abbey, Anina, or Alexa to miss out on their first PAC road meet, but props to Teri for mixing up the line up to get under the PAC road meet dual limits. Used to schedule quasi JV meets, but clearly left some stars home too.

Built the current and last few recruiting classes with duals in mind. Has bigger squads, hopes more will develop into NCAA qualiers/scorers, but wants to balance team harmony too. Klaren/Piehl class did that seamlessly.

"After being a championship contender for a decade, the Golden Bears will have to fight to remain one and the fight will perhaps be tougher than it ever has been. Stanford, Georgia, Michigan, USC and Virginia are all ranked ahead of Cal and are coming off stellar seasons."

Actually it might be a blessing in disguise if our :bear:s aren't considered to be one of the main contenders for the National title this season. Would take some of the pressure off their backs, as expectations (mostly from others) were set just ridiculously sky-high during the Missy era, and also at the Dream Team's debut last year!

The Georgia women, who were in large dismissed by a majority of the swimming media pundits as being favourite/serious contenders for the NCAA crown the last go-round, actually turned this to their advantage, using their perceived "underdawg" status to fire each other up all thru last season (even had a related twitter hash tag or two that they posted throughout the season for motivation), and came away with the big prize in March of 2016.

Much like Phelps using his arch rivals' negative quotes as a driving impetus during his training to arrive at a point where he was able to deliver his best performances on the big occasion, I reckon a valuable lesson can be taken from all of this...

Basically we can't really control external factors such as how great our opponents are doing in the pool - for example, LSJU will surely dominate in a myriad of ways such as potentially sweeping the whole freestyle spectrum of individual & relay events, Abbey being the sole spoiler standing in their way in the 50 & 100 free, with the super furdettes expected to break more than a few records and run up their points this season!!!

So instead of wallowing in frustration or self-doubt over apparently everyone's perception of the over-achieving farmers (and possibly some other rival teams) holding an unchallengeable superiority & advantage over Cal, should feel heartened that our Bears always have full control over their own swims & their own destiny.

Don't let the so-called "haters" get in the last word - but use their negativity to drive your positivity to come together truly as a team in support & encouragement of one another, and simply let your performances speak for themselves! (Oh, wouldn't hurt too much either if in the process, our women manage to score the target 420 to 480 NCAA points that was suggested by beardevil... :p)

The women's swimming & diving team had a 3.376 GPA in 2015-16, which led all 30 of Cal's athletic programs.

For all the Pac-12 and NCAA championships Teri McKeever has seen her teams win over her 25 years as head women's swimming & diving coach at Cal, a new honor announced at an athletic department staff meeting last week seemed to bring her a similar level of excitement and pride.

Specifically, the Golden Bears received the Newmark Award for having the highest cumulative GPA among all 30 of Cal's intercollegiate athletic teams for the 2015-16 academic year. When combined for the 24 women on the squad, the figure came to a very impressive 3.376.

"It's something we talk a lot about on a daily basis the ability to get a world-class education and a world-class swimming experience," said McKeever, who has guided the Bears to four NCAA and four Pac-12 titles. "I've always wanted to sit in on one of those meetings and have them say women's swimming & diving."

Overall, 14 Bears earned a spot on the 2016 CSCAA Scholar All-America team with 12 chosen Pac-12 All-Academic.

COUGARS VISIT SPIEKER FOR FRIDAY DUAL

California hosts its home opener on Friday afternoon when the Golden Bears welcome Washington State to Spieker Aquatics Complex for a 4 p.m. dual meet. The competition is the first of three straight in Berkeley for the squad, with Nevada visiting Nov. 4 and Texas on Nov. 11.

Last year, Cal and WSU staged a two-day dual in Pullman with the Bears coming out on top, 299.50-131.50. Then-freshman Amy Bilquist set pool records in the 100 back and 50 free.

The last time the Cougars visited Berkeley was also for the Bears' home opener. On that day - Oct. 5, 2013 - Cal came away with a 164-89 victory.

http://www.calbears.com/news/2016/10/19/womens-swimming-diving-cougars-visit-spieker-for-friday-dual.aspx

------

Look forward to seeing a (hopefully) full squad turn out @ Spieker, with perhaps the men's team boisterously cheering their counterparts on, if they haven't already travelled to Stockton for the Pacific Invite on Sat, that is. Hoping the board regulars here will make the trek to the home opener this Friday afternoon, as always enjoy/learn a lot from your reports & impressions!

Much too early in the season to read much if anything into absolute times, esp when racing unrested & unshaved in practice suits and in a relatively slow pool. The first half of the season is traditionally spent on doing the work/building the yardage and acclimatising the freshies to the group (emphasis on ENDURANCE training), whilst during & after the mid-winter Hawaii trip, more attention tends to be paid to all the little details of executing the racing just right (SPEED training). Always fun though to see how everyone esp the new faces do, and note who has the drive to get their hands on the wall first to help out the team and their teammates!

I know that I've commented in the past on how our women should focus primarily on the things that are under their control (i.e. what they themselves do, rather than worry excessively about the competition). But as armchair observers it's always an interesting exercise to compare times and such, and the furdettes (who thankfully have most of the media's undivided attention this season with Ledecky & co. in the spotlight) are facing a similar dual schedule in that they will also be up against the Cougars (2 pm tomorrow, session will be live streamed) as well as having competed against OSU last week, though their stars were/will be swimming a ton of off-events so will be hard to make any valid comparisons.

Not to be overlooked either are some of the other collegiate swim powers. Louisville's Mallory Comerford (1:43.13 already in the 200 free, 47.89 - 100 free, 4:37.64 - 500 free) & 'SC's Louise Hansson whom I had raved about back on the 2016 recruiting thread (1:43.04 - 200 free, 52.35 - 100 back, 1:55.96 - 200 IM), Louisville's Andee Cottrell in the breasts, UGA's Megan Kingsley in the flys, amongst other notables, have already posted some wickedly fast NCAA A cuts & almost-cuts this early in the season in multiple events (granted, that SMU Invite was conducted in their race suits, which are normally reserved for mid & end of season rest/taper meets...don't know how rested swimmers were in that competition).

Think 2017 NCAAs, happening after an Olympic year, will be a very speedy meet overall compared to recent editions, esp with Abbey, Simone & Ledecky now joining/re-joining the fray (not forgetting the other less heralded top talent either!). We may have to adjust our expectations, and our swim team their goals, ever upwards...

No. 9 Cal women's swim to face Washington State in home opener

"The first home meet of the year is always a very exciting one for our freshmen," said Cal assistant head coach Ian Walsh. "I think swimming at home, obviously having the crowd, definitely helps and allows for a little more exciting atmosphere. We've got an excellent pool, and I think we're just going to use the momentum coming up from Oregon State to progress and get better with each competition this season."

"We're really excited to host Washington State," Walsh said. "I think every meet is a benchmark for our young ladies. I think it's once again an opportunity to see where we're at, and it's still early in the season but I think with each competition you can always learn something, whether it's a different event or an individual competing. They've done a great job with their program, and they're definitely up and coming. We're looking forward to a great meet this weekend."

2016-2017 WOMEN'S NCAA POWER RANKINGS OCTOBER EDITION
Morgan Priestley | October 20th, 2016
20. AUBURN TIGERS (2016 NCAA FINISH: #33)

Opened the season with back-to-back wins over Wisconsin and Kentucky. As expected, the sprint group is deep, but Auburn's end-of-year results depend on one of those sprinters making the leap.

19. UCLA BRUINS (2016 NCAA FINISH: #17)

Strong swims for the Bruins at the SMU Classic. Linnea Mack currently sits #2 in the country in her three best events (22.5/48.6 sprint freestyle, 52.8 100 back), and Emma Schanz dropped an impressive 4:09.52 to win the 400 IM.

18. FLORIDA GATORS (2016 NCAA FINISH: #19)

Last season was a forgettable one for the Gators, but with added depth in the off-season, they already look like a more well-rounded team. We'll have an even better idea after their upcoming back-to-back slate (Indiana/Texas this weekend, Georgia next weekend).

17. OHIO STATE BUCKEYES (2016 NCAA FINISH: 14)

The Buckeyes aren't the deepest dual meet squad, but Lindsay Clary and Liz Li will score points in bunches in the postseason.

16. MINNESOTA GOLDEN GOPHERS (2016 NCAA FINISH: #20)

Fell to archrival Wisconsin to open the season. Canadian Olympian and star breaststroker Kierra Smith is back after redshirting last season, giving the Gophers a great medley front-half along with Zoe Avestruz. Having diver Yu Zhou (31 NCAA points) returning for her senior season helps, as well.

15. WISCONSIN BADGERS (2016 NCAA FINISH: #21)

The duo of Chase Kinney and Beata Nelson give the Badgers a real chance to compete in sprint relays at NCAA's, while Cierra Runge handles the longer events. Wisconsin opened the season by splitting a pair of tight contests against Auburn (loss) and Minnesota (win), but their biggest test is this weekend against NC State.

14. TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS (2016 NCAA FINISH: #13)

First look at #1 recruit Meghan Small will be this weekend against North Carolina. Also keep an eye on the Volunteers sprinters; they have a large void to manage from the graduation of Harper Bruens and Faith Johnson.

13. MISSOURI TIGERS (2016 NCAA FINISH: #11)

Downed conference rival Alabama to open the season. The Tigers are counting on Hannah Stevens and Katherine Ross to lead.

12. TEXAS LONGHORNS (2016 NCAA FINISH: #15)

The Longhorns were hurting last year without Gretchen Jacques, but a top-five recruiting class led by Claire Adams and Kaitlyn Harty will help. We'll get our first look at them this weekend, as Texas travels to Bloomington to take on Indiana and Florida.

11. ARIZONA WILDCATS (2016 NCAA FINISH: #12)

Lots of young talent on this roster, led by one of the nation's best sophomore classes. Annie Ochitwa is excellent, and Taylor Garcia has had a promising start to the year after a disappointing freshman campaign.

10. NC STATE WOLFPACK (2016 NCAA FINISH: #9)

Much like the men's team, the Wolfpack women seem to be on a continued ascendence. With some development of their freshmen/transfers, NC State can match or top its 9th place finish from last season. Freshman Ky-Lee Perry will be the key.

9. VIRGINIA CAVALIERS (2016 NCAA FINISH: #5)

The Cavaliers will almost certainly not match their 5th place finish from 2016 NCAA's now that Courtney Bartholomew has graduated, but there's plenty to be excited about here, include one last go-round for Leah Smith. They kick off the season against Pittsburgh this evening.

8. MICHIGAN WOLVERINES (2016 NCAA FINISH: #10)

It's always important to temper your excitement with teams who compete at the SMU Classic; it's always a crazy-fast October meet, so merely looking at top times lists doesn't get us very far. That being said, the Michigan women had their best team in a long time last season, and even with the graduation of Ali Deloof, they're positioned to be even better this year.

7. INDIANA HOOSIERS (2016 NCAA FINISH: #7)

No formal competition yet for the Hoosiers, but they have a big one this weekend with Florida and Texas coming to town. Keep an eye out for the return of redshirt senior / NCAA champion Brooklynn Snodgrass.

6. LOUISVILLE CARDINALS (2016 NCAA FINISH: #8)

"No more Kelsi Worrell" will be a consistent (and important) narrative when evaluating the Cardinals, but Mallory Comerford (NCAA 'A' cut in the 200 free) and Andee Cottrell (59.6/2:08.7 breaststrokes) are red-hot at the moment. Freshman Casey Fanz (22.6/49.6 in the sprint freestyles) has turned in some nice times, as well.

5. USC TROJANS (2016 NCAA FINISH: #6)

The Trojans are returning most of their big guns, and freshman Louise Hansson is already looking like the ringer we thought she'd be, already notching an 'A' cut in the 200 free at the SMU Classic. Dangerous team with top-three potential.

4. TEXAS A&M (2016 NCAA FINISH: #4)

The Aggies were victorious in their season opener against Incarnate Word last night (full results unavailable at time of publication). This is a loaded squad, with 19 of 20 relay legs returning (plus some other fresh faces). We'll reevaluate after the first week of November, when they take on Texas and Florida.

3. CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS (2016 NCAA FINISH: #3)

Cal usually doesn't have very competitive meets to open the year, so we won't read into anything with their Oregon State victory, other than breaststroke is once again their Achilles heel. To compete in March, the Bears need a solution that (hopefully) doesn't involve having Abbey Weitzeil pull a Caeleb Dressel and take on Cal's breaststroke duties.

2. GEORGIA BULLDOGS (2016 NCAA FINISH: #1)

Three years ago it was Melanie Margalis making the leap. The next year it was Hali Flickinger. This year's candidate: Megan Kingsley. The returning All-American has already been 53.07/1:54.90 in the 100/200 butterfly to start the year.

1. STANFORD CARDINAL (2016 NCAA FINISH: #2)

The Cardinal didn't show anything of note in their first week other than a 52.85 backstroke from Ally Howemost of the squad swam 'off' events in a runaway victory over Oregon State. Doesn't matter. With six returning NCAA champions and Katie Ledecky, this team is the clear #1 for now.

Not surprised the Card are #1 already. I was at the Stanford/Wash St. meet today and they set 3 new pool records. 200FR, 500FR by Ledecky, which isn't too surprising (1:44.18 and 4:36.43). VERY surprised that Simon broke the pool record in the 100FR this early in the season at 48.00

Yup, caught part of their livestream - not all that surprising (i.e. Ledecky owning it in the pool - methinks she may have Missy's phenomenal 200 free record in her sights come NCAAs), but nonetheless the furdettes were quite impressive overall esp for this early in the season.

Think Simone's on a roll after having killed it @ Rio (even beat Ella Eastin in the 200 IM lol)! The only in-season 100 free that's been faster so far has been Mallory Comerford's 47.89 from the SMU Classic, but that was done in a racing suit. Abbey will def. have to be on her game this March to challenge/foil Manuel in the sprints - but I have every confidence that our Dream Teamer will do Bears proud!

Here are the top NCAA Division I times swum thus far this season, as of the 17th (doesn't include today's dual meet results from down on the Farm):

------

More stats...this one features freshie Maddie Note that Moseley & Fanz's faster collegiate swims were conducted in race suits:

USA Swimming: The 50 Freestyle is a great event with a lot of tradition. Check out the top 20 for 17-18 so far this year. It's early but going to be fast.

------

USA Swimming: Amy Bilquist was 3rd in the 100 Back and 4th in the 200 Back at the Olympic Trials. Look for her to have a strong impact at the NCAA's.

RE: 100 FR -- Simone Manuel was 48.00 today (October 2016). She was 48.57 in October 2014. So, she's dropped 0.57 seconds in 2 years. Makes sense given that she dropped about that amount of time in LCM in 2 years. (I think it's within the bounds of expectations.)

BTW, over the past two meets, I've counted 18 NCAA B times swum by 7 Stanford swimmers. Prior to today, they had 7 NCAA B times. Cal has 8 NCAA B times swum by 6 swimmers. Let's catch up tomorrow, when hopefully our swimmers are entered in more primary events. As I've mentioned, my working hypothesis is that NCAA B times swum in season (i.e., no competition suits, etc.) are highly indicative of NCAA qualification/scoring during championship season.

(If anyone is stats/Excel savvy and wants to look at the data, PM me.)

Cheers beaverbear for doing all that grunt work with the stats!

Speaking of which, I had earlier today started putting together a list of the personal bests accomplished by our women's swim team - at least those that met or weren't too far off the 2017 NCAA 'B' cut...or would have qualified for the C final (or higher) @ 2016 Pac-12s.

If the PB had happened in HS (i.e. pre-Cal), tried to include an additional 'B' cut time (if applicable) that has been done whilst repping Cal. Took the liberty of putting Cierra's times for the mid & distance freestyles just to illustrate how much her transfer will/has hurt the Bears scoring wise...

Was hoping that this may help as one starting point from which to get an early feel for who may be positioned to help with the team scoring @ NCAAs & Pac-12s. Also may be interesting to come back to at the end of the season to see if any of these PBs have been improved upon.

Obviously there's a multitude of potential pitfalls in this approach! For starters, it's just a sketchy preview of what has been done in the past and not necessarily an accurate indicator of what's to come...many of these swimmers won't be competing in that particular race at the big dance due to schedule conflicts, or it being an "off event", or being just less productive scoring wise v. the competition, etc...tends to be excessively optimistic as these are best times, often having either been achieved a while ago or didn't occur on the ideal occasion, i.e. NCAAs in March...neither does it take into account the 2016 NCAA scorers who have since graduated, or the new/incoming potential scorers this year.

Still, may be of some/limited value if taken in conjunction with beaverbear's (hopefully ongoing) count of in-season NCAA 'A' & 'B' times, along with SwimSwam's periodic team rankings and CollegeSwimming's preview/predicted scoring here: https://www.collegeswimming.com/news/2016/oct/05/womens-preseason-top-50/

Did very quickly develop a massive headache trying to eyeball a mish-mash of figures tho, and wishing that I had the nifty tools, algorithms and access to linked databases which the coaches & pros probably pay the big bucks for lol

This first pass really needs more work, so would appreciate any help in filling in missing data and correcting inaccuracies - will update as needed

BTW, USA Swimming has the following resources:

Only times from dual meets and above would count for NCAA Championships, so intrasquads, alumni meets, etc., would not count; there needs to be at least two schools present to make sure everything is legit (e.g., no bulkheads in the wrong position).

(BTW, I am slightly annoyed by CollegeSwimming.com, since they don't have the Cal vs. Oregon State meet from last week in their records, and include various intrasquad meets in their rankings.)

Just for reference, the following schools have placed in the Top 4 at NCAAs over the past quad (2013-2016):
 • Women: Cal, Georgia, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Stanford
 • Men: Arizona, Cal, Florida, Michigan, NC State, Texas, USC
