Obviously Teri & Ian will be juggling various relay combos in these remaining duals before championship season takes off in earnest. At this rate, I'd personally be rather inclined to put Abbey in the breast slot of the shorter relay (200 Medley relay) come NCAAs, since Weitzeil has already demonstrated on more than one occasion that she's significantly faster than Marina when it comes to the sprint breast. The question then being whether Weitzeil will be of greater help to the Bears if she was to drop an individual event in order to contribute to all 5 relays (relay points being double) - bow out of the 200 Free perhaps, where Abbey's less likely to be in the Top 3, relative to the 50 or 100 Free?

However, we are relatively weak in the 200 Free this year, so Abbey's points may be needed to help push down the rather formidable furdette scoring threat there, so it may work out best if she was to take that on as her 3rd individual event instead of going for all 5 relays... In which case, I suppose the 400 Medley relay may be the one relay where her loss would be the least felt - Abbey's advantage over Marina isn't as significant in the 100 distance (if she's even consistently faster at all), and Farida can anchor the free leg of this relay without putting Cal at too great a disadvantage (Noemie's looking to be our fastest flyer this season, which would free Farida up for the anchor)...

Yup, Hannah Cox is turning to be as studly as we had reckoned her to be back on the old 2016 recruits thread (when she was overlooked by some folks due to being a bit of a late bloomer) - took the win in both the 200 & 500 Free and 2nd in the 200 IM this afternoon. Oh well, that's life...same goes for Furdette Ella Eastin and Trojanette Kirsten Vose from the 2015 class... :bawl:

Jaz did partly redeem herself with a solid enough anchor on the 400 Free relay B team at the very end - a 52.09 split that surpassed Val's 52.68, as well as Jenna's 53.04, Chenoa's 53.47, Anina's 53.51, and Aislinn's 54.06 leadoff on the C squad. Mau's fly performances however have some way to go to catch up to her old form...

What Would The NCAA Look Like Without Diving?

In 2014 Swimming World posed the question “Should diving have a separate NCAA championship?“. Back then almost 72% of people responded that they would like to see a split between the two sports with two separate championships. Nevertheless, almost three years later, according to the NCAA, swimming and diving is still very much one sport.

However this question raises many more. Which schools are assisted most by diving teams? How much does diving really affect final placings? What would NCAA swimming results look like without diving?

Here is a look back to what would have happened in 2016 if swimming and diving were separate sports.

Women

Georgia brought home the National Championship title in 2016 and if diving wasn’t scored it would have been no different. However, California would have jumped ahead of Stanford to take second, with Stanford falling to third.

Nevada, Miami (Ohio), LSU and South Carolina would all have fallen out of the top 30 teams with UCLA falling 10 places to 27th. Wisconsin would see a huge benefit, moving from 21st to 16th.

In the diving championship, Nevada, led by Sharae Zheng, and Stanford, led by Gracia Leydon-Mahoney, would have tied for first (56 points) with UCLA (55 points) only one point behind in third, Minnesota (40 points) and Miami (Ohio) (33 points) would have rounded out the top 5.

Amy took care of the backstroke duties whilst Kathleen was focussing on breast, free & IM in the individual events yesterday.

Today, at least from what I had seen on the live stream (still waiting for the results to be released), it seems that Thleen returned the favour by taking over the back stud role, whilst Amy went to her sprint free. Abbey also explored her breast & fly chops against ASU...

Freshman Chenoa Devine captured the 1000-yard free vs. Arizona State Saturday.

TEMPE, Ariz. California completed a sweep of its trip to the desert, racing past Arizona State, 181-111, in a dual meet Saturday. The Golden Bears won 14 of 16 events, and sophomore Phoebe LaMay broke her own school record on the 1-meter springboard.

Cal, which defeated Arizona Friday, opened the meet by taking the first two races the 400-yard medley relay and the 1000-yard freestyle behind freshman Chenoa Devine's time of 10:06.20, which was more than seven seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

Sophomore Amy Bilquist, who captured two backstroke events against Arizona, came through with a pair of victories in the free at the 100- and 200-yard distances. Sophomore Kathleen Baker, an Olympic silver medalist in the 100-meter back, won the 100 and 200 back, while sophomore Katie McLaughlin prevailed in both the 200 butterfly and 500 free.

LaMay opened her day with a win in 3-meter diving, then scored 317.63 on the 1-meter board to break her own school mark of 314.18 set earlier this season vs. Texas.

Others to touch the wall first for the Bears were freshman and Olympic medalist Abbey Weitzeil in the 50 free and junior Noemie Thomas in the 100 fly, as she remained undefeated in the event this season. In addition, senior Celina Li captured the 400 individual medley and the Bears won the 200 free relay.

"We swam people in some different events and I thought it went well for us," head coach Teri McKeever said. "We're definitely moving in the right direction, but we're going to need to be better for next week. We are looking forward to having USC and UCLA come in because we know they're going to give us a strong challenge. It's parents' weekend for us, so we hope to have a good crowd for both meets."

Cal returns to Berkeley for its final three dual meets of the year, hosting USC Jan. 27, UCLA Jan. 28 and Stanford Feb. 11.

Pac-12 Weekly Analysis: Stanford, Cal, USC Will Make Conference Interesting

Abbey Weitzeil. Photo Courtesy: Peter H. Bick

By Dan D’Addona.

The Pac-12 women’s swimming race has been led by Stanford and Cal all season, and with the rise of USC, all three teams are currently ranked in the top six in the country.

It adds up to a lot of fast swimmers going head to head with a conference championship on the line. Plus there will be the added mystery of which swimmers and teams taper for the Pac-12 meet, which ones do a partial taper and who won’t taper at all. Since all three contenders could be in the running for trophies at the NCAA meet, their focus will be ahead, which means things can get a little crazy at a conference meet.

Stanford still has the most returning points from last year’s NCAAs and that doesn’t include the addition or re-addition of three Olympians — Katie Ledecky, Simone Manuel and Kassidy Cook. That is going to be tough to stop at NCAAs and Pac-12s.

Cal, meanwhile, has plenty of top-level talent with Kathleen Baker, Abbey Weitzeil, Amy Bilquist, Farida Osman, Celina Li and Katie McLaughlin. But the depth isn’t quite as strong as Stanford’s.

USC has a chance to really make things crazy a the Pac-12 meet because the Trojans are loaded with depth, but have just a couple of top-level swimmers with Louise Hansson, Riley Scott and Becca Mann. That depth goes a long way at a conference meet and could cause some surprises.

Cal’s prowess in both the pool and the classroom was on display once again as 14 members of the Golden Bears’ women’s swimming & diving team have been recognized as Scholar All-Americans, the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association announced Wednesday.

Overall, Cal placed 10 Bears on the first team, which ties for the highest total in the country, with four additional Bears receiving honorable mention. Cal was the only school in the Pac-12 to reach double digits, and the Bears’ 10 first-team selections were double the next closest conference squad.

Those are the first team, which requires a GPA of 3.50 or higher and participation at the NCAA Championships meet, are:
• Rachael Acker
• Amy Bilquist
• Rachel Bootsma
• Marina Garcia
• Anne Kastler
• Phoebe LaMay
• Kelly Naze
• Farida Osman
• Noemie Thomas
• Kristen Vredeveld

In addition, Catherine Ladd, Jasmine Mau, Maija Roses and Hayden Tavoda were honorable mention choices. Each of them had at least a 3.50 GPA and either achieved an NCAA “B” time standard or competed at the NCAA zone diving meet.

Earlier this week, Cal was named a Scholar All-America team for having a combined 3.57 GPA this past year. The Bears' GPA was highest in the Pac-12 and second highest among schools that finished among the NCAA Top 10 in 2016.

Cal finished third at the NCAA Championships this past March, marking the eighth consecutive year the Bears have placed among the country’s top three teams – a stretch that has included three national titles.

Expected this to be a close meet and it wasn't. Cal times were pedestrian. So what gives? Swim gurus on our board: what do you think? USC had come throughs the whole meet.

We surely weren't saving efforts for the UCLA meet coming up this weekend. Not worried except it's getting close for our team to start bringing down times with only a couple of duals left, then the PAC 12. Also our Spanish breast stroke competitor needs to make a bigger move downward in her times.

Pac-12 Weekly Preview: USC, UCLA, Cal, Stanford Set For Weekend Carousel

Sometimes it is quality over quantity.

There are only five swim meets in the Pac-12 this week, but they are five great ones, giving the conference an exclamation point on the regular season before things move toward the Pac-12 Championships.

Check out these matchups:

USC at Cal, then at Stanford (Women)

One of the greatest rivalries in the pool reloads when Cal faces USC. The Cal women are ranked No. 6, while the USC women are No. 4. This will be a battle of Cal's elite vs. USC's depth, though USC has some elite and Cal has some depth.

USC is a team that has kept under the radar for most of the season despite being a top five team for much of the season and will look to make a statement on Friday at Cal.

The USC women then head to Stanford for a dual meet the following day.

It will be a brutally tough weekend, but rewarding in the long run for the Trojan women, who are looking to sneak in to the top five at the NCAA meet.

UCLA at Stanford, then at Cal

No. 2 Stanford hosts No. 19 UCLA in this women's meet on Friday, part of a double dip for the Cardinal.

UCLA is in a similar position as USC this weekend and will look to gauge where things look heading into the Pac-12 meet. The Bruins aren't as good as Katie Ledecky, Simone Manuel and company, but are a good team and will have some say in the Pac-12 championship.

The Bruins will really have a gauge after the weekend because after Friday's meet at Stanford, UCLA sims at Cal, another powerhouse.

Arizona at Texas

The Texas women are No. 1 and continue their upstart season. The Longhorns knocked off Georgia and Auburn on the road this month and defeated Cal on the road early in the season. The only loss the Texas women have had is to Stanford.

On Friday-Saturday, the Longhorns host an Arizona team that has had a strong season, but has shuffled through the rankings between the 20s and No. 10. This meet should be another victory for Texas, but will be important for Arizona as the Wildcats look ahead to NCAAs.

The Golden Bears hit the homestretch for the dual meet portion of the season this week, hosting USC at 2 p.m. Friday and UCLA at 12 noon Saturday. Admission to both days of competition at Spieker Aquatics Complex is free.

Cal is coming off a pair of convincing victories after racing past Arizona (181-119) and Arizona State (181-111) last weekend on the road. The Bears close out the regular season with a home meet vs. Stanford Feb. 11, then move on to the Pac-12 Championships in late February and the NCAA meet in Indianapolis March 15-18.

To date, Cal owns 15 swims that have reached the NCAA "A" qualifying standard - second-most in the country - including all five relays, and has 19 swims that rank among the nation's top 16. In addition, sophomore diver Phoebe LaMay has broken school records on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.

Last year, Cal dropped a 153-147 decision to USC in a meet that came down to the final relay, while the Bears rebounded the following day to defeat UCLA, 185-114.

Jan. 25, 2017

The No. 4 USC women's swimming and diving team takes its unbeaten record on the road this week for the annual clash against Troy's Bay Area rivals, taking on No. 2 California at 2 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 27) and at No. 1 Stanford on Saturday (Feb. 28) at noon.

The Trojans enter the weekend at 6-0 overall, 5-0 in the Pac-12. California is 5-0, 4-1, while Stanford is 5-0, 4-0. USC upset Cal last year at home, 153-147, for its second win in a row against the team from Berkeley before falling to the Cardinal in another tight meet, 152-148. In the win over the Bears, then-freshman Riley Scott won the 200y IM (her third win of the day) late in the meet before Troy clinched the victory with a win in the 200y free relay.

Obviously the USC meet will be the toughest due to USC's dept and new Frosh. UCLA meet may have some of our Bears swim different events. It still bothers me about our miss on Riley Scott who is from the Bay Area. I remember talking with her and her older sister when they visited a Cal meet when Riley was still a Senior in High School. I guess my charm did not work this time, but I never give up. Thank goodness the weather will ok without any rain.

It still bothers me about our miss on Riley Scott who is from the Bay Area. I remember talking with her and her older sister when they visited a Cal meet when Riley was still a Senior in High School. I guess my charm did not work this time, but I never give up. Thank goodness the weather will ok without any rain.

Hey longseeker! I remember seeing Riley at meets too, but never spoke to her. Never really got the vibe that she was coming to Cal, even though it seemed like a natural choice because we are closer to home.

Riley Scott was at every women's and men's meet her junior year and seemed a lock for Cal. Despite that she commit to 'SC early in the Summer before her senior year. Reading between the lines, Teri saw her as a Plan C behind the Dream Team, Ella Eastin, and Vose. Wasn't great for her, but Teri made the right call based on data then and now.

Definitely recall all the excited talk on this board back then on Riley's perfect attendance at all our home duals. Didn't someone here report having a nice long chat with Scott too at the Trojans dual last Spring, or was it the prev year? At any rate still think, of all those 2015 recruits who came to Berkeley on an official visit, the biggest miss for us was Kirsten Vose (TBH, think Ella already had her sights set firmly on the Farm even then).

Anyway, back to the U$C dual discussion...

Matchups are often difficult to predict with much accuracy for dual meets as a lot of swimmers don't always get to compete in their best events there. Muddying the waters further, some tend to hold on to their speed better in-season, whilst others are more responsive to taper dropping a ton of time at their end-of-the-season championships.

Troy freshie Louise Hansson will be a veritably dangerous threat as she's so bloody good in a plethora of events (4 A cuts already)! The Swede Olympian's quite capable of going head to head with any of the Dream Team in the 200 Free ... Amy/Thleen in the 100 Back ... Noemie/Farida in the 100 Fly ... Kathleen in the 200 IM ... Katie in the 500 Free!

Free: Hansson could also take on Abbey/Farida/Amy in both the 50 & 100... Then there's always Anika Apostalon, followed by freshman Tatum Wade & Stanzi Moseley, for Val/Maddie/KV/Noemie to contend with in the sprint frees. Note here that Wade's range extends up to the 500, and she can also be competitive against Celina & Katie in the 200 Fly, not to mention Celina in the 200 IM ... Vose/Chelsea Chenault/Wade/Moseley/Scott/Maddie Wright in the 200 Free ... Becca Mann/Allie Wooden/Sydney Lofquist in the distances.

Breast: If the former Cal prospects duo of Vose & Scott races the 100 or 200 tomorrow, they will be really tough on Marina/Abbey/Thleen/Celina/Maija/Chenoa. Additionally, 'SC may field Kelsey Kafka & Riley Hayward in support.

Back: Trojans can put up Hannah Weiss & Hannah Leach, but Kathleen & Amy (and possibly Keaton) should be able to handle this pair.

Fly: Cal's fly sprint depth (Noemie/Farida/Kathleen/Maddie/Abbey) should prove too much for Wright/Catherine Sanchez/Moseley/Wade, even if Hansson's called upon to tackle the 100 Fly. As for the 200 Fly, Wright will potentially slug it out with Noemie whilst Wade may face off against Katie & Celina, with Sanchez/ Chenault/Lofquist being options for Salo too.

IM: The 400 IM could see Celina/Chenoa/Courtney up against Scott, Mann & Lofquist.

Hey tedbear, if you hang out with longseeker on the upper level railing, there's a chance that you may get to meet your fave :bear:'s grandmum... :p

No. 6 Cal women's swim plays host to No. 4 USC, No. 19 UCLA

By Christopher Zheng | Staff

With the regular season coming to a close soon, the Bears will face a daunting challenge as their southern rivals come up north. After a dominating show in the desert last weekend, the No. 6 Cal women's swim team will play host to No. 4 USC and No. 19 UCLA on Friday and Saturday. In the afternoon on both days, Spieker Aquatics Complex will be full of incredible talents and exhilarating races.

As it has been this season, the Bears have been relying on sophomore trio Kathleen Baker, Amy Bilquist and Katie McLaughlin to pave the way. They are joined by freshman phenom Abbey Weitzeil and seniors such as Farida Osman and Celina Li, who will need to make the most of this weekend as they begin to change gears and focus on bigger obstacles.

While Cal is being carried by the sophomores, the USC freshmen have put together outstanding performances the entire year.

USC freshman Louise Hansson has been absolutely sensational. The Swedish Olympian has already logged four NCAA individual A standards. She's been a key leg on all five of the Trojans' top relay performances this year and has proven to be an elite 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyle swimmer. She can also be a tough opposing force in the 100-yard butterfly and backstroke as well as the 200-yard individual medley. Despite it being Hansson's first year swimming in the United States, she will be one of the toughest individual swimmers that the Bears have faced all year.

While Hansson is USC's all-around threat, fellow freshman Becca Mann is the team's premier distance freestyle specialist. Mann is a rare commodity in NCAA swimming because she is a world-class distance freestyle swimmer something few other teams can boast this year.

Freshmen Stanzi Moseley and Tatum Wade round out the recruiting class and have strengthened the freestyle depth that was lacking last season. They will be joining the senior combo of Anika Apostalon and Chelsea Chenault, which could make USC the only rival to Stanford's elite ability at every freestyle race from the 50- to 1,650-yard freestyle events.

USC took home its first Pac-12 Championship and finished sixth in the NCAA Championship last year, and it looks primed for a more successful championship season but Cal will be the biggest challenge the young Trojans have seen.

UCLA isn't as formidable an opponent as USC, but they have key pieces who are capable of holding their own against Cal. Bruin senior Linnea Mack is the school record holder in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races as well as the 100-yard backstroke. These events, however, are among the Bears' fortes, which will make it difficult for Mack and UCLA to score individual or relay event wins. The Bruins' best chance at event titles may come in the diving events where they have good depth, but Cal sophomore Phoebe Lamay and the rest of the diving crew has improved significantly under diving coach Derek Starks.

As all the teams prepare for No. 1 Stanford one of the greatest collegiate swimming teams in history in terms of accomplishments, speed and talent and the championship season, this weekend's slate of competition will be a great trial run.

Notes from Friday's meet against the Trojans. It was a gorgeous day to watch a meet, and it was made all the better with a Bear victory!
-Abbey was definitely sick and didn't swim in the 400 Free relay, so take her results with that perspective in mind.
-Katie is looking good on her comeback trail and won the 500 Free. She also looked very good in her 200 Fly although she died at the end.
-Chenoa impressed me a lot, and won the 1000 Free, and came in second to Katie in the 500 Free. In a really strange twist of events, Rebecca Mann, missed a turn and had to go back and touch the wall, and then paused on the wall for a second on another turn. I don't think it would have made a difference anyways, because she was well behind Chenoa at that point.
-The other big freshman who I think will make a big impact at NCAA, I'm not including Abbey here, is Maddie Murphy. She looked very solid in the Fly and sprint Frees.
-Teri has both Amy and Kathleen swimming together now in the Back events. Amy won the 100 and Kathleen won the 200. Kathleen broke Liz's pool record in the 200 Back, and Liz gave her a high five after the swim. That was a really cool moment.
-Bears dominated the 100 Fly with Noemie, Farida, and Maddie finishing 1,2, and 3.
-Marina held her own finishing second in both Breast events against Breaststroke U, but yeah, Riley Scott looked pretty dominant.

Well TedBear gave a nice recap... So I'll do my usual sidebars:

(1) Chenoa Devine blew my socks off as she led most the way, if not all the way, even with Becca Mann in the race. I know Chenoa is an open water swimmer, but never thought she would swim so strong against USC. Mann had a terrible day period.

(2) Weitzell did a Missy Franklin "for the team" swimming the breast in the 200 medley relay to start the meet. And she held up well against Riley Scott.

(3) I'm feeling a little bit better about our Frosh class as previously I thought we only have a star in Weitzell, but Murphy, Blovard, Devine, Mykannen are improving among others in the class so a couple of them were under rated.

(4) We even got some diving points!

Now my sidebars--for UAC and TedBear:

I got my usual first row seat at the warm-up pool real close to where our swimmers come after an event. (I was surrounded by the Riley Scott family!) After the first event (200 medley) I said "Nice race, Amy" and Bilquist came over to me to say "thanks" and then I asked her to say "Hi! to her gramma for me whom I mention I met at a previous meet.

I also congratulated Chenoa Devine because she swam her heart out to win the 1000 race. The meet must have taxed USC coach Dave Salo and Terri and staff in settling on who swims which races and noticed Salo did not enter a lot of swimmers in events where we are real strong, and Teri may have done so as well.

The Cal women really earn what the Men's team does during their meet, yelling "Relays"..."Relays"!

Finally, as I was leaving the meet I bumped into and talked with a Riley Scott fan who had a bear on his cap.Turns out he coached Riley Scott on his Club team. He also coaches, I think he said, at Marin College. He will be at the UCLA meet tomorrow as he attended there. BUT, he told me he is now "a Cal Bear fan"! So I said if he ever coaches another phenom, put in a plug for Berkeley.

CAL SWIMS PAST TROJANS, 165-135

1/27/2017 4:49 PM | By: Cal Athletics

Kathleen Baker set a pool record when she won the 200 backstroke in 1:53.66.

BERKELEY Sophomore Kathleen Baker set a pool record in the 200-yard backstroke and Cal won nine events as the Golden Bears pulled away in the second half of the meet to defeat USC, 165-135, Friday at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

Cal held just a two-point lead at the midway point and the Trojans edged ahead after the 200 breaststroke. But the Bears claimed the last four swimming races and finished 2-3 in 1-meter diving to open up the 30-point final margin.

"I really thought we rose to the occasion," head coach Teri McKeever said. "Some of the girls probably surprised themselves with their swims, which is great. I thought we were consistent and held together well during the meet. We talked about that and about needing to turn around tomorrow and be just as sharp. That's what we're going to need at Pac-12's and NCAA's."

Baker, who captured a silver medal in the 100-meter back at the 2016 Olympics, entered the day as the national leader in the 200-yard back. She came through in record fashion, touching the wall in 1:53.66 to break the pool and Cal dual-meet mark of 1:53.94 set by Elizabeth Pelton three years ago. Baker also won the 200 individual medley in 1:57.13 and took second in the 100 back.

Freshman Abbey Weitzeil, also a medalist at the Olympics last summer, won her specialty, the 50 free, in 22.27, with senior Farida Osman right behind in 22.41. Weitzeil was second in the 200 free, but her time of 1:45.01 was a season-best for the Bears.

Sophomore Katie McLaughlin captured the 500 free in 4:47.50 and was the runner-up in the 200 fly. Her time of 1:55.62 moves her up to 11th in the country in the event.

In the 1000 free, freshman Chenoa Devine set a personal best and posted the No. 10 all-time mark at Cal with her first-place finish in 9:52.51. She was also second to McLaughlin in the 500 free.

Other winners for the Bears on the day were Amy Bilquist in the 100 back (52.25) and Noemie Thomas in the 100 fly (52.35). Both are the national leaders and undefeated in their respective events in dual meets this season.

In addition, Cal prevailed in both relays. Bilquist, Weitzeil, Thomas and Osman won the opening 200 medley relay in 1:36.83, while Maddie Murphy, Bilquist, Kristen Vredeveld and Osman closed out the afternoon by taking the 400 free relay in 3:17.35.

The Bears return to action Saturday when they host UCLA at noon at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Admission is free.

Gratuitous note: lol at how each side (understandably ) tries to present things in the best light possible.

We are #6 so naturally makes it quite satisfying to have easily outscored a #4 team who have somehow come off with the win in the prev couple of dual meets (actually that's an entirely accurate representation of the current official dual meet standings as per CSCAA's ranking system). In particular gunning down an arch-rival who we root against with almost as fervent a passion as v. the evil empire (the furd).

Whilst $C's madly trying to spin a positive side to the results by claiming that they were beaten by the #2 team in the nation (which is an outdated ranking from the period prior to the current one)...

Not that I'm biased or anything, mind you, but reckon that the Bears women's true standing right now should be closer to #2 rather than their official #6 ranking (with the furdettes at #1 instead of the Horns) :p

Thanks all for great reports. Was worried about both this dual and 'Zona, but Bears came up big both times. Especially pleased by the toughness in the B relays and from relatively unsung Bears who pulled off critical fifth scoring points in individual events. That was the difference in the dual.

Gutty swims by Jenna (200/500 Free), KV (200 Free), Celina (200 Fly), CM (both backs), and Keaton (200 IM). Teri's built a team that would win an NCAA title under normal circumstances, but is still a very good dual team too.

Salo's Condomettes are always a mystery-they never lack talent, are solid in duals and @ PACs, but never have the elite depth to make a credible challenge for an NCAA title. Hansson and Riley are studs, but Mann, Vose, Anika, Stanzi, and Chenault were off. Great in breast and sprints, but surprisingly weak in distance and middle distance. Not exactly boo hooing for the undisputed Great Satan of the PAC.

Onto the pastel Southern branch. Always curious what Linnea Mack's ceiling in sprints and back would have been as a real Bear.

I was at the meet as well, which was Parent's Day and sitting in the stands with KV's mom, and the parents of Chenoa Devine, Aislinn LIght and Amy Bilquest among others. We Cal fans were a bit nervous when it was announced that the Condoms went 1-2-3 in the 200 breast, but that result was corrected after a couple of minutes and Marina was shown as grabbing 2nd. Katie and Chenoa then outswam the talented SC distance group (Mann, Tatum) with Jen Campbell with a late push challenging Tatum for 3rd. When the score was announced including the 1 meter diving results I thought it would still be close, but Hayden Tavoda's 2nd place points really sealed the meet with Cal's depth in the 100 fly and 200 IM the next events.

It would have been interesting to see Cal's # 2 rated 400 free relay team take on SC's # 5 rated team for all the marbles, but both squads left off top sprinters from the finale once the outcome was in the books. Nice gutty win over Salo's squad and some top notch competition with Hansson, Scott , Maddie Wright and Apostalon et al.

FIVE BEARS DOUBLE UP IN WIN OVER UCLA

BERKELEY Five Golden Bears won two events apiece and Cal swept both the 200-yard medley and 200 free relays, leading to a 165-128 dual-meet victory over UCLA Saturday at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

One day after downing USC, the Bears came back with another solid performance to improved their record to 7-1 overall and 6-0 in the Pac-12. Cal closes out the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 11 by hosting Stanford in a noon showdown in Berkeley.

"I thought we did a nice job of staying strong again and being competitive," head coach Teri McKeever said. "We did talk about backing up yesterday's performance, and I felt we had really good energy with a good crowd."

Overall, the Bears claimed first in 13 events, starting with a 1-2-3 finish in the opening 200 medley relay. The foursome of Amy Bilquist, Marina Garcia, Noemie Thomas and Valerie Hull touched ahead of the pack in 1:40.70, with two Cal squads right behind.

Chenoa Devine followed with second straight sub-10-minute 1000 free as she led wire-to-wire before finishing in 9:59.71.

Bilquist the national leader in the 100 back swept the 100 free (1:47.20) and 200 free (48.85) for the Bears, while Thomas claimed both the 100 fly (52.45) and 200 fly (1:58.13). Thomas paces the NCAA in the 100 fly and is undefeated in the event this year.

Noemie Thomas won both butterfly events vs. UCLA.

Abbey Weitzeil sprinted to victory in the 50 free (22.24), as the Bears took the top four spots with Farida Osman, Maddie Murphy and Kristen Vredeveld following in succession. Weitzeil also changed pace from her sprinting form and won the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.39.

Senior Celina Li had perhaps the toughest double, scoring first place in the 500 free in a season-best 4:53.31 and then came back barely 20 minutes later to win the 400 individual medley in 4:17.74.

In addition, sophomore Phoebe LaMay earned victories on both the 1-meter (289.35) and 3-meter (323.55) springboards.

Cal closed out the afternoon with another 1-2-3 showing in the 200 free relay, led by a time of 1:31.94 by Keaton Blovad, Thomas, Hull and Osman.

"We're getting close to Pac-12's and NCAA's, so we took a look at each individual and how we put them in situations to keep building their confidence moving into championship season," McKeever said of some of the different events Bears swam. "For example, Amy sometimes only gets to do the backstroke, so it's good to swim freestyle. I want to make sure that Abbey is swimming more than just the 50 and the 100 free for the next four years, and Celina did a nice job in the 500 free for us, and then was able to swim the 400 IM."

CAL EXPLOSION THROWING DOUBT ON ONCE-CERTAIN NCAA TITLE

This is a very longwinded way of saying what swimming fans (and sports fans in general) already know: nothing is certain. It's the unpredictability of sports that keeps us continually on the edge of our seats. NCAA titles are never decided until March. And that fact could make the next three months an incredibly exciting roller coaster ride that none of us will want to sleep on. Archive Photo via Tim Binning/TheSwimPictures.com

Jared Anderson | January 28th, 2017

According to some college swimming enthusiasts, the women's NCAA crown has been all-but settled for some time now.

Read the comments section of any recruiting article over the past few seasons and you'll get a strong sense that Stanford should be the runaway favorites for this year's NCAA title, if not for a streak of several years.

And while it's true that Stanford has ruled recruiting for the past several seasons and that the Cardinal still are the clear frontrunners for the title, recent swims by California have made that frontrunner status far less cut-and-dried as it has appeared the rest of this season.

And there I was hoping that our Bears would by and large fly under the radar this season, quietly training and prepping to silence all those vocal doubters who have been smugly proclaiming that the furdettes would decimate the field and run away with the NCAA title... (by 100-200 points, "guaranteed" :facepalm)

Will admittedly still be a massive uphill battle to come close to challenging the LSJU juggernaut come March, especially considering our well-documented scoring depth issues in certain areas (distance, breast, 400 IM etc)... But, not a completely insurmountable goal to strive for, in light of the encouraging performances of a number of key personnel at the Georgia Invite and also results from recent duals!

Team looked surprisingly good in GA, but still some questions. Hard to ignore an A cut (9th fastest in the country) in the 200 Medley Relay unsuited and untapered in January. Abbey's been a machine from the get go, but Maddie, Keaton, CM, and Chenoa are coming on strong. Same for Phoebe and Jenna.

Still think a title is unlikely this season, but far from impossible.

Popourri commentary as you can get the results elsewhere:

Every thing about our team today was very good having gone though a tough meet with USC yesterday. I salute our Senior Celina Li who won a difficult double without much rest. She is from Foothill High in Pleasanton where I lived for 26 years after retiring from work at City Hall.

As I sat down in my usual front row by the warm up pool an elderly couple sat next to me and we eventually started a conversation. Turned out they are the grandparents of Melanie Klaren. Nice people and they kept me up with what Melanie is doing. Then I cracked up when Missy Franklin with sunglasses on and chewing gum was chasing down a toddler who was running amok.

I bought raffle tickets again from Liz Pelton and she sure was a sport about Kathleen Baker breaking one of her school records. Lis is such a beautiful girl and she must be close now to graduation. She also talked with the Klaren folks.

The not so good for me today was the UCLA fans who kept yelling that UCLA UCLA cheer through out the meet and even when the meet was over. UCLA fans wore leis but I don't know what the occasion was. Cal fans cheered at appropriate times. The large contingent of UCLA fans was not surprising to me as they have a roster of 40 athletes with 11 or 12 swimmers/divers from the Bay Area so I guess they make the Title IX people happy as UCLA continues not to have a Men's squad.

And, lastly, for Tedbear: As the meet was coming to a close a man sat next to me and asked if my name was "Dan" (which it is). I said yes and he said his mother called him to tell him to say "hello" to me. I said who is your mother and he said Amy Bilquist's grandma. Then I said then you must be Amy's dad and he said yes so we continued talking. Tedbear: you really need to sit in the front row!(LOL).

Standing along the upper rail, Liz waved from below. Did she want me to buy some raffle tickets? I waved back but she actually was waving at Missy who was standing next to me who yelled back to Liz, she didn't have her wallet. Missy actually spent lots of time watching and taking care of none other than Kristen Cunnane's kids. Good to see Kristen at the meet. I did later buy some raffle tickets from Liz.

Cal depth shows sweeping both relays. With Abbey winning the 100 breast could this cinch a leg on the MR for the championships?

Yeah, I sat next to Julie and Brent in the stands yesterday. Super nice people! A lot of the swim bearants are pretty awesome, and it is truly reflected in the character of their children. If I can make it to the Furd meet, I will look for you.

Perfectly fine with the status quo, but no way UCLA should be worse than 'Zona and not remotely competitive with the other CA PAC schools. Mack, Madison White, Jax Shoults, Mary Pelton, Emma Schanz, Liu, and Okada are all good girls, students, and swimmers, but they never got better in the pool at UCLA. Not all would have become stars at Cal, but a few would have become NCAA scorers under Teri. Kristen @ UCLA would change the equation. Much better recruits and much better results.

Or, Kristen could always resume her coaching & recruiting here once she's done with her "extended sabbatical"...would make a whole bunch of folks really happy :p
