With classes already underway today, thought it's time to start up a thread for the new NCAA season!

Last year was extremely challenging for our :bear:s, but at the same time I was very impressed by everyone's resilience and all the hard work put in to achieve as much as the whole team had managed under these difficult circumstances (key transfer out, coaching loss, multiple injuries & health issues of a rather serious nature, etc etc).




Sooo sad to bid farewell & bon voyage to Bootsie, Lizzie, Rachael, Kelly & Alicia :bawl:

But also smashing to see a lot of familiar & friendly faces return to campus (Thleen now a celebrity after her Olympic exploits lol) ... and always exciting to welcome the talented freshies (Abbey + Courtney, Keaton, Maddie, Aislinn, Alexa, Anina & Chenoa) as they embark upon their new journey here :cheer

Furdettes are of course the overwhelming favourites for the National title this year with a killer crop of top recruits, then there is Simone's return after a fantastic series of breakout performances in Rio, not to mention Ledecky coming on board to make her mark on collegiate records & history ...

Dawgs will surely be in there too with Van Landeghem fresh from the standout results of her Canadian teammates. Bauerle may have had a less than optimal last couple of recruiting seasons, but as we saw in March, one should never underestimate UGA and their trademark depth!

OTOH, recall how it had all worked out for the Aussies in Rio when they were, on paper, slam dunk winners by an unassailable margin in a number of events? :p

Top-tier additions: #2* Abbey Weitzeil (deferral), #13 Keaton Blovad, Maddie Murphy, Courtney Mykkanen, Chenoa Devine

Abbey Weitzeil was the #2 recruit from the Class of 2015, but she may even be the #2 overall recruit in history. Sprinters are the difference-makers at the NCAA level, and Weitzeil is the best prep sprinter in history. She currently holds the American and U.S. Open record in the 50 free (21.12), and also she dropped a 46.29 over 18 months ago at Winter Juniors to temporarily own the 100 free records, as well. She's not the only sprint addition, either. Teri McKeever also landed Keaton Blovad (22.7/49.0 in the 50/100) and Maddie Murphy (22.5/48.6). Blovad carries more freestyle endurance (1:46.6 200 free), but Murphy adds a 100 butterfly to the mix (52.1) that would have scored at NCAA’s. That fly adds important long-term depth to the Cal fly group, as Noemie Thomas will be the loan threat remaining after Farida Osman graduates this year.

Two more serious assets for Cal: Courtney Mykkanen, a 53.9/1:56.0 backstroker and 2:00.9 IMer, and Chenoa Devine, a 4:44.3/16:20.3 distance freestyler. While not at the NCAA individual scoring level right now, both will be key at Pac-12’s, particularly Devine; recent graduations and the transfer of Cierra Runge have left the distance cupboards rather bare (no pun indended) for Cal.

There appeared to have been a few worries expressed in some quarters over the drastic falloff in Jasmine's times last season (no official explanation as to its cause).

Mau's contribution will be a crucial component of the team dynamic for another serious run at the NCAA Champs title, and we are all rooting hard for Jazzy to get back to form...and more importantly, back on track on her life journey :cheer

Still no signs of a schedule, but the annual Cal Poly "Queen of the Pool" Pentathlon tradition will take place on [U]Friday 23 Sept[/U] @ 11 am down in San Luis Obispo - should be a fun event with Celina looking to go 4-for-4 all in a row for the coveted crown. Kathleen may have something to say about that if she's healthy this time round tho (skipped the free, back & fly events last year).

A somewhat puzzling date is the SJSU dual, which is set for 21 Dec according to their published schedule, since it's in the middle of the week, and the Fall semester would have already been over the prior week...

Sadly many (most notably myself) have written off the Dawgs prematurely. Will still be very tough with CVL, Smoliga, Cameron, Z, Britt, Stewart, and Raab, but crappy recruiting has hollowed their underclasses out. Will be tough for another two seasons. Need a monster 2017 recruiting class plus multiple star transfers to hold off the big fade after 2018.

The pre-game celebration will serve as part of Cal Night, with fans who purchase a special ticket receiving a Cal/A's beanie in addition to a Field Level seat. Some key names were missing when I first checked about 15 minutes ago, i.e. froskis Abbey, Maggie Gallagher & Rachel Reeves (Diving) ...but no need to panic yet, as some of those MIA freshies did show up just now, so they must still be updating the page! :p

An addition that I was unaware of previously is Mia Diliberto (Diving) - appears to be a legacy (sister Monica was a 2015 :bear: graduating from Haas?), who had competed with the Stanford Diving Club:

btw, not sure the lighting scheme used this year is all that desirable - the higher position of the main lights tends to throw some rather unflattering shadows esp under & around everyone's eyes, cheeks, dimples & chins...yes perhaps a bit more of an artsy effect was achieved by revealing an increased dimensional rendition as well as impart more highlights to the hair than your standard/safe "2 umbrellas at the corners" flat-lighting setup, but IMO the corresponding shadows, hot spots & increased contrast don't really flatter portraits esp of women...jmo, of course lol
