Anyone with plans to come cheer on our seniors + the rest of the women's & men's teams this weekend @ Spieker?
- - ASU (Friday) boasts a really powerful dive squad who may dominate ... they can also field a mid-58 / 2:06 breaststroker in Silja Kansakoski, backed up by Marlies Ross & Nora Deleske in the longer breast ... will look to challenge Bears in the middle to distance free events, courtesy of Emma Nordin, Kendall Dawson & Erica Laning.
- However, Cal's top end talent & depth should see off the Sun Devils quite comfortably (I'd take Thleen & Amy over their star backstroker / IM stud Chloe Isleta any day ), esp with our strengths in the backs/flys/shorter IMs/sprint free & relays.
- Of course this being a dual means nothing is set in stone - much will depend on how tired everyone is swimming at this stage of their training, how many will take one for the team racing in an off-event or two, exhibitioned swims aka mercy points , etc!
- - UofA (Sat) will likely roll out twin threats Hannah Cox & Kirsten Jacobsen in the 200 up to the 1000 free with Daniela Georges in support ... Katrina Konopka's always someone to watch in the sprints ... Mallory Korenwinder will be competitive in the 2 breast events ...
- But, my obvious bias notwithstanding lol, Bears are more than equally capable of handling the Wildcats' other stars, such as Mackenzie Rumril (fly, IM), Daniela Georges (100 back) & Cameron McHugh (200 back).
Sad to hear that you can't make it, tedbear - hey you're going to miss out on all the hype & festivities, including a pre-dual rally led by Cal Band, alumna such as Marina & Farida cheering their teammates on, and most likely a bunch of 2019 recruit elites (unofficially) checking out the action!tedbear said:
Sadly, I'm not going to be able to make it to Senior Day today. I think this is the first I've missed in the past four years. Anyways, I was hoping someone that goes could update me on the performance of one of my recruiting favs, Hannah Cox. We sure could use her 500 Free and 400 IM right now.

TOP 8 NCAA WOMEN'S TIMES FROM LAST WEEK'S DUAL MEETS
There were several very fast meets over the weekend, so we've compiled the top 8 times across the NCAA's Division 1 from last week (Jan 15-21).
50 FREESTYLE SCY FEMALE
4) Abbey Weitzeil (SO) - 22.20 // California
100 FREESTYLE SCY FEMALE
6) Abbey Weitzeil (SO) - 48.98 // California
100 BACKSTROKE SCY FEMALE
7) Amy Bilquist (JR) - 53.38 // California
200 BACKSTROKE SCY FEMALE
4T) Amy Bilquist (JR) - 1:54.93 // California
100 BREASTSTROKE SCY FEMALE
8) Alicia Harrison (FR) - 1:01.90 // California
100 BUTTERFLY SCY FEMALE
2) Noemie Thomas (SR) - 52.28 // California
400 INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY SCY FEMALE
7) Sarah Darcel (FR) - 4:18.14 // California
Impressive...still a mite top heavy if I'm allowed to get nitpicky lol - we'll need the rest of the team to step up @ Pac-12s to make those critical NCAA cuts in order to have any chances of derailing that loaded runaway furdette train, or at least to avoid another lopsided score (not to underestimate dangerous threats such as TAMU who would love to upset the traditional Bears-Trees-Dawgs trifecta atop of Division I) ... but nonetheless still encouraging stats, hope our Bears will keep rolling on right thru March!bearz012 said:

Just a little observation related to the Daily Cal article and pertaining to the value the women's team places on humility- I was at the Cal-Arizona meet. I was really impressed with the Cal swimmers, especially Amy Bilquist, in how they made a point to show their gratitude to the Cal Band for showing up. Amy, in particular, thanked each member of the band as the band was leaving. I loved seeing some of the greatest swimmers/athletes in the world taking the time to notice that the Cal band didn't have to be there. For me, that display of humility makes it so much more fun to cheer on the Cal women's swim team.

Excluding the divers that's 8 swimmers so far into the NCAAs. Hoping the Stanford meet we will be able to squeeze more into qualifying before the Pac-12 meet. Looks like Ali Harrison is on the cusp in both breast event though not sure she would even swim the relay events if she made the NCAAs. Also hoping Robin & Chenova gets through for the depth in the 800 relay. They both seem close to qualifying and with the added incentive of swimming against Ledecky this might push them through.bearz012 said:
