Golden Medals: Cal Swimming national titles chances

Cal Aquatics should continue the streak of consecutive individual or relay national titles, but how competitive will they be in the team title hunt?

Chance to win a team national title: 10%, because you have to respect that Stanford squad with Katie Ledecky and Simone Manuel - who both decided to keep their amateur statuses

Chance to win individual national titles: 100%, Calympian Kathleen Baker is still in her prime

Although Stanford just ended their team national championship drought in 2017, they are nicely setup to be a dynasty. Stanford women's head coach Greg Meehan is basically the equivalent of Dave Durden but for the women. Even after Ledecky, Stanford has loaded up on other top ranked recruits both already at The Farm and coming in the future.

The NCAA championship will take place in Columbus, Ohio this year in mid March. It should be interesting to see if any Cal Bears really emerged between now and then (or peak at the NCAA as planned). Bears should continue their streak of finishing as a top 3 as a team since the Bears along with Texas A&M are considered the top contenders to Stanford.

However, until Katie Ledecky decides to turn pro (maybe this offseason?) so she's no longer the automatic win for the 3 distance events as well as some of the relays, Stanford may just be too strong for other teams to catch them.

BEARS PREPARED FOR SENIOR WEEKEND

Arizona State Visits Friday, Followed By Arizona Saturday

------

Anyone with plans to come cheer on our seniors + the rest of the women's & men's teams this weekend @ Spieker?

  • - ASU (Friday) boasts a really powerful dive squad who may dominate ... they can also field a mid-58 / 2:06 breaststroker in Silja Kansakoski, backed up by Marlies Ross & Nora Deleske in the longer breast ... will look to challenge Bears in the middle to distance free events, courtesy of Emma Nordin, Kendall Dawson & Erica Laning.
  • However, Cal's top end talent & depth should see off the Sun Devils quite comfortably (I'd take Thleen & Amy over their star backstroker / IM stud Chloe Isleta any day ), esp with our strengths in the backs/flys/shorter IMs/sprint free & relays.
  • Of course this being a dual means nothing is set in stone - much will depend on how tired everyone is swimming at this stage of their training, how many will take one for the team racing in an off-event or two, exhibitioned swims aka mercy points , etc!

  • - UofA (Sat) will likely roll out twin threats Hannah Cox & Kirsten Jacobsen in the 200 up to the 1000 free with Daniela Georges in support ... Katrina Konopka's always someone to watch in the sprints ... Mallory Korenwinder will be competitive in the 2 breast events ...
  • But, my obvious bias notwithstanding lol, Bears are more than equally capable of handling the Wildcats' other stars, such as Mackenzie Rumril (fly, IM), Daniela Georges (100 back) & Cameron McHugh (200 back).

Hey look forward to your impressions of the dual v. ASU later this afternoon, BD! (not to put any unnecessary pressure on you attending, of course )

Note that the furdettes' matches v. Zona & ASU will be webcast live this weekend, in case anyone not going to Spieker feels like checking in on the competition, or to see if Simone or Megan are back in the pool (personally wish them the best...please take your time about it, in order to ensure you make a proper & full recovery...i.e. see yer next season hehe)

Sadly, I'm not going to be able to make it to Senior Day today. I think this is the first I've missed in the past four years. Anyways, I was hoping someone that goes could update me on the performance of one of my recruiting favs, Hannah Cox. We sure could use her 500 Free and 400 IM right now.

Sad to hear that you can't make it, tedbear - hey you're going to miss out on all the hype & festivities, including a pre-dual rally led by Cal Band, alumna such as Marina & Farida cheering their teammates on, and most likely a bunch of 2019 recruit elites (unofficially) checking out the action!

BEARS SWEEP ARIZONA ON SENIOR DAY

Seniors Maija Roses, Valerie Hull, Jasmine Mau and Noemie Thomas closed out their home careers with a win over Arizona.

Quick notes:
- If it isn't a timing pad/soft touch error (i.e. Elizabeth Bailey's 28.15 fly split), then Natalie Tuck's 22.88 anchor is a really impressive in-season split on that 200 Medley Relay!
- Katie McL. continuing to show this season that she has some serious sprint free chops on top of her fly & mid distance talent!
- Thleen valiantly fighting a Crohn's flare-up, or just swimming very tired?

Best moments of the day were before and after the 200 Free Relay (final event). Teri let the 4 seniors compete as a team in Lane One. They all linked arms pre-race and were pogoing wildly to psyche themselves up like a kickoff coverage team. Packed house went crazy when they were announced. Maija anchored over Hull or Noemie. Sadly they got smoked (fifth), but they shared a warm group hug after their final race in Spieker.

Tough meet for our girl Hannah. Got beaten twice by both Chenoa (1000/500) and Robin (200/500). Hannah was fifth and sixth in the 200 and 500. Thought she could have helped the Bears in those events, but looked like she's regressed. Doubt she was sick or injured since she swam the 200 right after the 1000. Seemed really unfair, but 'Zona has minimal depth across the board. Rooting for Hannah, but yesterday was rough.

Sat among the 'Zona parents. Former Bear recruit Jenna Bauer's mom (Santa Rosa) was among the crew. Teri gets bagged on way too much, but she can coach everything but breast. Will always wonder how high Hannah's or former UCLA swimmer Linnea Mack's (San Jose) ceilings would have been as Bears. Both have ideal swimmer frames. Former Bear Sam Shimomoura's sister Sarah (Santa Cruz) was on the 'Zona roster, but didn't swim. Didn't see her brother or parents at the meet.

20 Question Tuesday: Kathleen Baker

8. You were fast before you even got to Cal, but your ascension to the top of NCAAs, the U.S. and internationally has been so consistent -- is that the "journey" part we hear people talk about?

Kathleen: For sure. Definitely, I consider that I've been on a four or five-year journey, sort of climbing up the ladder. I have been able to improve each year. I pick something each year to add to the program because I know there's more that can be gained. I've been lucky to get the experiences I have had along the way. Whether that's NCAA swimming or making meets during the Quad, Nationals or getting international opportunities -- you learn so much about your competitors and yourself.

12. Picking Cal you get the swimming and the school, both at high ends, how cool is that?

Kathleen: I've definitely gotten the best of both worlds swimming-wise and academically. I enjoy the process here. I've gotten into different things and learned so much, and I have a great group of girls around me who push me every day.

13. And having a coach who tries new things like Teri McKeever does, what's that like?

Kathleen: Teri is super innovative, doing things out of the box like no one else in the world -- that's one of the things I liked about coming here because that's how we did things at (SwimMAC), and I do well in that kind of approach. I also think it's interesting and benefits me -- and keeps me really sharp.

18. Swimmer of the Year at last year's NCAAs -- maybe the most contested meet for that event with the world's best swimmers on the women's side, what did that honor mean?

Kathleen: It was so amazing. I didn't even really expect it, to be honest. I just really wanted to go out there and do my best, though, I know winning three events (and second place in the 4x200 relay) is super hard at NCAAs, I couldn't ask for more. I was so relieved when I finished the 200 back to come away with the win. And given the fact that the coaches vote on it, I was a little surprised, and very honored.

Well whilst our Bears are on a plane heading down to SoCal (furdettes having already landed and primed for their dual v. UCLA), thought I'd post a sobering reminder of our massive 119.5-190.5 loss to the Trojanettes 4 years ago (no less a Cal team fronted by Missy, Lizzie, Bootsie, Cindy & the likes!)...in case anyone should get a mite complacent with our 7-0 dual record this season:

Womens S&D rocked by USC....

Bears had also fallen to 'SC the last time we were on their home turf, albeit by a much tighter 147-153 in 2016.

http://usctrojans.com/news/2018/1/22/womens-swimming-diving-no-9-usc-hosts-no-3-california-no-2-stanford.aspx

"The No. 9 USC women's swimming and diving team puts its unbeaten record on the line this week when it hosts Pac-12 unbeaten rivals No. 3 California on Friday (Jan. 26) at 2 p.m. and No. 2 Stanford on Saturday (Jan. 27) at noon at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center.

The Trojans enter the weekend at 7-0 overall, 4-0 in the Pac-12. California is also 7-0, 4-0, while Stanford is 5-0, 4-0. USC has won two of its last three meets against the Bears, including a home win in 2016, 153-147. The last time the Trojans hosted Stanford in 2016, the Cardinal edged USC, 152-148.

Cal and Stanford are both coming off home sweeps of the Arizona schools last week. Among the top Bears are Olympian Abbey Weitzeil, ranked first in the nation in the 50y free (21.44) and second in the 100y free (46.95). Fellow Olympian Kathleen Baker owns the top time in the 100y back (50.62), 200y IM (1:53.24) and is third in the 200y back while teammate Amy Bilquist is second in the 200y back, ninth in the 100y back and eighth in the 50y free. Noemie Thomas has top 6 times in the 100y and 200y fly."

TOP 8 NCAA WOMEN'S TIMES FROM LAST WEEK'S DUAL MEETS

There were several very fast meets over the weekend, so we've compiled the top 8 times across the NCAA's Division 1 from last week (Jan 15-21).

An obvious pattern here the Stanford women hold the top time (or, in some cases, top two, or three, times) in nearly every event. Katie Ledecky had the fastest time of the week in the 500 free, 1000 free, and 400 IM, Simone Manuel was quickest in the 100 and 200 free, and Janet Hu ruled the 100 fly and 200 back. Manuel went a 1:44.20 in the 200 free and Ledecky a 9:19.52 in Stanford's victory over Arizona last Friday.

Other than the Cardinal, Cal, Michigan, and Virginia are all over the place in the top 8. Michigan's distance free group makes a clear mark in the 1000 free.

Impressive...still a mite top heavy if I'm allowed to get nitpicky lol - we'll need the rest of the team to step up @ Pac-12s to make those critical NCAA cuts in order to have any chances of derailing that loaded runaway furdette train, or at least to avoid another lopsided score (not to underestimate dangerous threats such as TAMU who would love to upset the traditional Bears-Trees-Dawgs trifecta atop of Division I) ... but nonetheless still encouraging stats, hope our Bears will keep rolling on right thru March!

Just a little observation related to the Daily Cal article and pertaining to the value the women's team places on humility- I was at the Cal-Arizona meet. I was really impressed with the Cal swimmers, especially Amy Bilquist, in how they made a point to show their gratitude to the Cal Band for showing up. Amy, in particular, thanked each member of the band as the band was leaving. I loved seeing some of the greatest swimmers/athletes in the world taking the time to notice that the Cal band didn't have to be there. For me, that display of humility makes it so much more fun to cheer on the Cal women's swim team.
Thank you very much for sharing your astute observations, mighty bears

So lovely to hear heartening stories like yours, it's things like that which really reminds us what a wonderful group of student-athletes & human beings Teri has taken under her wing, in & out of the pool. Go Bears!

2017-2018 WOMEN'S NCAA POWER RANKINGS: JANUARY EDITION

#20: FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES (PREVIOUS RANK: 20TH)

#19: WISCONSIN BADGERS (PREVIOUS RANK: 17TH)

#18: AUBURN TIGERS (PREVIOUS RANK: 16TH)

#17: UNC TAR HEELS (PREVIOUS RANK: 18TH)

#16: OHIO STATE BUCKEYES (PREVIOUS RANK: N/A)

#15: MINNESOTA GOLDEN GOPHERS (PREVIOUS RANK: 15TH)

#14: MISSOURI TIGERS (PREVIOUS RANK: 12TH)

#13: NC STATE WOLFPACK (PREVIOUS RANK: 13TH)

#12: VIRGINIA CAVALIERS (PREVIOUS RANK: 14TH)

#11: KENTUCKY WILDCATS (PREVIOUS RANK: 11TH)

#10: TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS(PREVIOUS RANK: 10TH)
A team really coming into its own now gets sprint star Maddy Banic back. Early returns have been great: most notably a 22.7 in the 50 vs Florida. -JA

#9: INDIANA HOOSIERS (PREVIOUS RANK: 9TH)
IU is consistently putting up the best medley relay times in the nation week-to-week and might be one of the few teams in the nation with a chance to unseat Stanford in any of the relay events at NCAAs. -JA

#8: USC TROJANS (PREVIOUS RANK: 8TH)
The Trojans lost their undefeated status with a two-loss weekend, but that's what happens when you swim #2 Cal and #1 Stanford on back-to-back afternoons. Freshman Marta Ciesla had a weekend to remember, though, touching out Olympians Abbey Weitzeil and Simone Manuel on consecutive days in the 50 free. Ciesla is part of a killer freshman class that should have USC fighting for a top-5 finish. -JA

#7: TEXAS LONGHORNS (PREVIOUS RANK: 7TH)
Arguably Texas's best swims this month came in long course meters at the Austin Pro Swim Series. The Longhorns remain undefeated in dual meets and Claire Adams has been the third-fastest 100 backstroker nationwide this month. -JA

#6: GEORGIA BULLDOGS (PREVIOUS RANK: 5TH)
Still thin on sprinters, but dive transfer Freida Lim is going to come up big. -JA

#5: LOUISVILLE CARDINALS (PREVIOUS RANK: 6TH)
All 5 relays are great. The core is young but still has an established star to lead the way in Mallory Comerford -JA

#4: MICHIGAN WOLVERINES (PREVIOUS RANK: 4TH)
This team has been blowing out its recent competition, even ranked teams like #9 Indiana and #16 Ohio State. Gabby Deloof is the latest revelation, swimming near lifetime-best times this month and putting up the top non-Manuel 100 free time in the nation for January. -JA

#3: TEXAS A&M AGGIES (PREVIOUS RANK: 3RD)
A&M is constantly underappreciated, they have a great sprint core, and their breaststroke/IM group is insane. -KO
If Cal and Stanford weren't so ridiculously loaded, this A&M team would be rising every week. Can they knock off one of the Pac-12 powerhouses? -JA

#2: CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS (PREVIOUS RANK: 2ND)
Noemie Thomas blasted a 51.7 fly last week to lead the national ranks for the month, and Maddie Murphy was 52.4 to boot. Cal has dominant flyers and backstrokers, and Abbey Weitzeil looks primed to rebound from a disappointing freshman campaign. -JA

#1: STANFORD CARDINAL (PREVIOUS RANK: 1ST)
The Cardinal gets world sprint champ Simone Manuel back along with distance ace Megan Byrnes. How much will the Card choose to get up and go at Pac-12s? And will we see any national records fall before NCAAs? One thing is for sure: next weekend's Cal-Stanford dual could be an absolute smash if both teams get up for it. -JA

CAL, STANFORD SQUARE OFF IN FINAL DUAL

"Two of the top swimming & diving programs in the country face off against each other Saturday when fourth-ranked Cal visits No. 1 Stanford in the final dual meet of the year for both squads. Action at the Avery Aquatic Center gets underway at noon.

To add some perspective to the series, Cal and Stanford have combined to win eight of the past nine Pac-12 team titles (4 each), while last year, either a Golden Bear or a Cardinal finished first every swimming event at the NCAA Championships except for the two breaststroke races (6 by Cal, 10 by Stanford). For 2018, Cal and Stanford swimmers currently lead the nation in 10 different events, including the 200 IM where Cal's Kathleen Baker and Stanford's Ella Eastin are tied for the top spot."

To put things in a bit of a sobering perspective, I believe we haven't won a dual @ Palo Alto since 2006, in fact have only triumphed on 2 occasions down on the Farm from 1999 to now.

Bears' home dual record against the furdettes isn't all that much better TBH -> 3 wins v. 7 losses @ Spieker (the last victory in 2015 by a Missy/Bootsie/Lizzie- led team that went on to win it all @ conference & the national championship).

Here are some stats (incomplete). Please let me know if there are any errors due to me quick copy & pasting sloppiness lol, and I'll happily correct:

2017: L, 123-177 ......... (Home) .... Pac-12: #2 ... NCAA: #2
2016: L, 128-172 ......... (Away) ..... Pac-12: #3 ... NCAA: #3
2015: W, 158-142 ........ (Home) .... Pac-12: #1 ... NCAA: #1
2014: L, 133-167 .......... (Away) .... Pac-12: #1 ... NCAA: #3
2013: W, 154.5-145.5 ... (Home) ... Pac-12: #3 ... NCAA: #2
2012: L, 126-174 .......... (Away) .... Pac-12: #1 ... NCAA: #1
2011: W, 155-145 ......... (Home) ... Pac-10: #2 ... NCAA: #1
2010: L, 131-167 .......... (Away) .... Pac-10: #2 ... NCAA: #3
2009: L, 162-129 .......... (Home) ... Pac-10: #1 ... NCAA: #1
2008: L, 123-177 .......... (Away)
2007: L, 147-153 .......... (Home)
2006: W, 169-131 ......... (Away)
2005: L, 128-172 .......... (Home)
2004: W, 151-149 ........ (Away)
2003: L, 154-146 ......... (Home)
2002: L, 140-159.5 ...... (Away)
2001: L, 149-151 ......... (Home)
2000: L, 146-153 ......... (Away)
1999: L, 145-153 ......... (Home)

Note: Cal's dual meet record v. LSJU is at 2-4 in the 6 seasons that the furdettes have been under Greg's leadership, after he had left our men's team (2008-2012). Bears have yet to taste victory over the trees @ Avery during Meehan's tenure.

The Furd's dual record against all the other schools OTOH is an impressive 42-2 in the same period! (the Card's pair of dual meet losses came at the hands of the Horns, down on the Farm in Nov 2012 & Oct 2014)

The furdette juggernaut's massive SCORING DEPTH relative to the rest of Division I (and I'm not talking about just their top end superstars here), bolstered by season after season of claiming the nation's #1 recruiting class, makes them a really tough nut to crack at the dual, conference & national level.

However, as always, Go Bears!

Pac-12 Weekly Preview: Cal-Stanford, USC-UCLA Rivalries Cap Regular Season

Two of the best rivalries in all of sports, especially in swimming, will get off the blocks this week, giving the Pac-12 season a high note to end on."

Excluding the divers that's 8 swimmers so far into the NCAAs. Hoping the Stanford meet we will be able to squeeze more into qualifying before the Pac-12 meet. Looks like Ali Harrison is on the cusp in both breast event though not sure she would even swim the relay events if she made the NCAAs. Also hoping Robin & Chenova gets through for the depth in the 800 relay. They both seem close to qualifying and with the added incentive of swimming against Ledecky this might push them through.
