Estonia has no steel, fertilizer/nitrates or energy sources, that claim is pure fantasy. Their economy is teetering on the brink as it is, they depended on cheap Russian gas and Russian tourists. Also in the event of an escalation their factory would be toast.

Other former Soviet block countries like Bulgaria or Czechia have bigger capacities, and long-standing experience as weapon manufacturers, they can potentially scale up their production. The problem is the way the western MICs are set up, relying on the private sector, it doesn't pay for a company to invest in an expensive production process for an item that is a commodity with lower margins and where long-term demand is uncertain (what if the war stops this year or the next). This problem is further compounded today by the fact that the cost of inputs (steel, copper, nitrates, energy) has become exorbitant.

NATO can start a program where it can subsidize many countries that would be able to produce small quantities of ammunition that could eventually help Ukraine get back to usage levels it had at the start of the war, this would be achieved in about a year or two, probably too late.

What NATO also needs, badly, is to mass produce cheap drones similar to the Shaheds/Gerans and the highly effective Russian Lancet loitering drones, which cost between $10k-$40k to produce. There is no equivalent in NATO's arsenal, at least not at that cost level. Eventually in a couple of years countries like Turkey, Brazil or India are going to pick up these effective low-cost designs and start selling them on the world arms market. By that time though, Russia is going to have an inventory in the thousands, and China in the tens of thousands.

Quote:

Question, can you explain the mixing of terminologies? Because if Russia is firing 20,000 - 60,000 rounds a day, how do "10,000 tubes" fit into that discussion. Are these tubes for larger shells / missiles?
Tubes here = cannons, tanks, MLRS rockets.

I may have been unclear. They're trying to set up or inspire a joint operation. It is woefully late, and that really points to NATO / USA. It should have been a hair-on-fire priority 8 or more months ago. All those MBA and advanced degrees show their worthlessness.

A lot of hubris on the NATO side, Russia is "a gas station masquerading as a country", western tech - Javelins, Boomerang, HIMARS, NASAMs etc - are gamechanging wonderweapons, Russians can't fight etc. The war planners are either ideologues who don't understand war basics and logistics, or MIC profiteers who are primarily concerned in keeping the money flowing.

Turns out Russia's MIC is more efficient, and they know how to fight a war on home turf, despite the problems they've had in the early stages. They've planned for the long term, going in war production mode, and become the best-equipped army in drone warfare today, with a whole range of options from the $15k Shaheds to the high six figure hypersonic Kinzhals.

Colonel Douglass McGregor also makes the point that America is a naval and air power, but we don't have a superior army.

It seems the Ukraine cheerleaders want shock and awe. That did the US so well in the Middle East. s/

What a pickle. Zelensky is incompetent and / or compromised (Nazi death threats if peace is
brokered), same for NATO, and nobody in the US can call the baby ugly. I guess one military brass did, and he was neutered in days. Russia may advance all the way to the Polish border.

Maybe this is a field you might be less knowledgeable about, or perhaps aren't using good sources of info on this subject.

Russia is the world's #1 army as far as fighting a land war on its borders. It has the most depth (#1) in artillery, armored vehicles, the best and deepest (#1) air defense networks and hardware, a very good air force (though smaller than NATOs - #3 or 4), and the best missiles (#1).

Overall Russia is the 3rd military power, not 5th. Like China's military, it is built and designed for a war on its frontyard, not halfway around the world. Taylored for his kind of war.

As far as the conduct of this war through year 1, the most relevant item is the casualties scoreboard. The rest is just noise and spin. On this scoreboard, Russia leads 450,000 to 90,000, roughly.

This war is not like Iraq or Afghanistan, or even Vietnam, it is more like the Korean War, or WW1, a conflict between somewhat similar armies/peers, featuring very heavy use of artillery.

If you want to understand what is really going on, from the conduct of this war, to future prospects and political analysis, this 30min interview of Col MacGregor covers a tremendous deal of ground. It also completely summarizes my position:

(the clickbaity headlines and sensationalist graphics aren't representative of the level of competence and professionalism displayed by MacGregor in this interview)

This is the position of someone who is
1-well-informed about the war
2-is focused on sparing lives and destruction

I didn't think you would use such an irrelevant measurement of military prowess, that's why it didn't register with me. By this measure, Vietnam, India, North and South Korea, all of which have bigger military personnel, are above Russia, which is a bit absurd.

Try to use this discourse as an opportunity to learn about important/interesting subjects, as opposed to approaching this as an acrimonious verbal fight where your primary concern is one-upping guys from the "other side".

Even if you believe you are absolutely right and the other guys are wrong, it is useful to find out why they are wrong, and what is the thought process and sources that might have led them to not being on the same page as you.

A modicum of emotional and intellectual maturity goes a long way.

Yahoo: Polish Ambassador to France: Poland will be forced to enter war if Ukraine fails to defend itself

"Poland's Ambassador to France Jan Emeryk Rociszewski said in an interview that a situation could arise in which Poland would have to enter the war. The embassy urged audiences to refrain from sensationalising his words."

"It is not NATO, Poland or Slovakia that are mounting ever more pressure, but Russia, which has invaded Ukraine. Russia, which is seizing its territories. Russia, which is killing its people. And Russia, which is abducting Ukrainian children."

"Therefore, either Ukraine will defend its independence today, or we will have to enter this conflict. Because our main values, which were the basis of our civilization and our culture will be threatened. Therefore, we will have no choice but to enter the conflict."

FWIW, Rociszewski was the Chairman of the Board of PKO Bank Polski, Poland's largest bank, and some allege WEF linkage.

Cal88, one thing you seem to be right about: Those Rooskies have a s***load of ammunition.

Other than that, they've been fairly disappointing over the past year and it doesn't matter what "channel" I've been watching. Just the fact that they haven't come close to winning after a full year is what bottom-lines this. Even if they seem to be grinding their way towards victory now -- and I don't know that that's true -- they've had a poor showing.

We're being so cautious about keeping the war contained -- and rightfully so, IMO -- we're not even giving Ukraine our best stuff, nor are we giving them weapons they could use to go on the attack. And yet they're hanging in there.

First, story about UFA leveraging a used javelin to carjack a tank. This sort of thing works because the Russians don't want to be there and don't care about winning Putin's dumb war. They just want to survive another day.

What I read is that the weapons manufacturers want guarantees that there will be demand after this skirmish in Ukraine ends. They do not want to make investments in capacity without a guaranteed ROI.

WSJ weighed in on Bakhmut this morning. Lots of interesting nuggets but here are a few snippets.

Quote:

"It's really tough. They're getting closer and closer," he said of the Russians during a pit stop this week outside a gas station 14 miles west of Bakhmut. "But their losses are still greater than ours."

The battle for Bakhmut is reaching a critical point as Russian forces throw assault troops on suicide missions, capturing territory inch-by-inch and closing around the city like a vise.
...
Bakhmut, the generals say, is a key element in their efforts to weaken Russia's army ahead of a critical Ukrainian offensive using fresh, Western-trained troops and modern equipment provided by the U.S. and its allies.
...
Both sides are suffering heavy losses, but Ukraine says the ratio remains substantially in its favor. Soldiers fighting in Bakhmut this week described brutal urban combat as the battle has become an attritional slog against troops from the Wagner paramilitary group spearheading Russia's assault there with units comprising mostly men drafted from Russian prisons.
...
He said the wounded tell him stories of Russian troops from the paramilitary Wagner Group launching assaults with no artillery or air support and armed only with Kalashnikov rifles, moving forward despite being pummeled by Ukrainian tanks and mortars.

One of those captured, a 48-year-old from Siberia, said he was serving a 12-year prison term for attempted murder when he joined Wagner, and was captured by Ukrainian soldiers on Friday. He said he was sent into combat without a rifle as punishment for looting alcohol from a local store after being dispatched by his commander to find food for Russian troops.

Col. Cherevatiy, the military spokesman, said Russia as an attacking force is losing six men for each Ukrainian lost, although some Western analysts say recent Russian advances have reduced the Ukrainian superiority. "Bakhmut is Wagner's final frontier," he said. "Our main goal there is to wear them out, waste them away and destroy them."
Insider had a clickbaity article about Wagner forces being on drugs but a lot of the details were consistent with other stories from the front line.
Quote:

A retired US Marine estimated that the average life expectancy of a Wagner soldier on the frontlines in eastern Ukraine is just four hours. And a 48-year-old prison inmate who exchanged his freedom to serve in Russia's Wagner Group told the Wall Street Journal earlier this month that the group only trained him for three weeks and that he expected to die on his first mission.

It's the kind of behavior that soldiers from Ukraine's Third Assault Brigade, which is now fighting the Wagner Group in the key eastern city of Bakhmut, believe could be the result of taking drugs. The unit's media officer told The New York Times that 10 to 15 Wagner fighters were advancing on their position, to their almost certain deaths, every day during the first month of fighting.

"They are killed and they come again," he told The Times. "Our guys are wondering if they are on drugs. Otherwise, how can they go to certain death, stepping over the rotting corpses of their colleagues? You can go mad a bit."
...
"You shoot them and more come constantly," one soldier said, according to AFP.

Another Ukrainian soldier told CNN in February that advancing Russian forces looked like a "zombie movie" as they climbed over "the corpses of their friends."

Yes, UFA has leopards now and that photoshopped picture is an example of Russian propaganda where they falsely claim to have destroyed a leopard.

And more evidence of war crimes - including video of a Russian soldier murdering an unarmed civilian. I guess the Russian shills will tell us that if we don't think Russia should be killing civilians, we should stop helping Ukraine defend itself. "The beatings will continue until morale improves."

The claims from the WSJ are the complete opposite of the testimonies from Ukrainian soldiers, in terms of loss ratios, level of equipment and training, and artillery support.

The "4 hour lifetime" estimate was widely floated from Ukrainian sources themselves as the expected lifetime of inexperienced Ukrainian soldiers on the Bakhmut front, who according to a Ukrainian soldier, are being hunted like bunnies" by the Wagner troops, it's not the Wagner troops that have a shelf life of 4 hrs.

Quote:

An American fighting on the frontlines in Ukraine is warning that the battlefield in Bakhmut is gruesome.

Russia is nearing its one-year anniversary of the "special military operation" it launched against Ukraine in February 2022. As winter weather fades and spring approaches, military experts are speculating a renewed offensive from Russian forces. Frontlines shifted to Bakhmuta city in eastern Ukrainein July 2022, and according to former U.S. Marine Troy Offenbecker, the scene is grisly.

Offenbecker, who is fighting in Ukraine's International Legion comprised of foreign soldiers, told ABC News that when a Ukrainian soldier fights on the frontlines in Bakhmut, their life expectancy is only around four hours.

"It's been pretty bad on the ground," he said. "A lot of casualties. The life expectancy is around four hours on the frontline."
https://www.newsweek.com/bakhmut-life-expectancy-near-four-hours-frontlines-ukraine-russia-1782496

Another claim from the WSJ article above is very easy to debunk, the claim that the Russians supposedly are the side with no artillery support. In fact the city is being surrounded by the Russians on 3 sides, with logistical support and delivery of ammunition having become extremely precarious for the surrounded Ukrainian troops, coming in through a muddy road under constant Russian shelling, assuming that Ukraine even have enough shells to spare in in the first place.

This article is an attempt to flip the narrative around. Ukraine is bleeding, badly on Bakhmut and other fronts, it is on the wrong side in what is essentially an artillery-driven war of attrition.

This WSJ piece a wartime propaganda piece for the consumption of the faithful. For those who understand what is really going on on that front, it's all too morbid, trying to hide the nature and scale of the Ukrainian losses in order to keep this grind of a war going - to the last Ukrainian.

Who knows, maybe Ukraine will launch a springtime offensive. At one point I think McGregor said thete were 30,000 men training outside the country for the spring offensive. (Many will be rookies.) But it must be hard to disguise 50-100 tanks coming by train or road.

Some believe the recent Washington Post article was a turning point, where the west starts to grapple with the realities.

Ukraine is waiting to launch its Spring offensive till the end of mud season, sometime in late April/early May, depending on the weather. Once the vegetation starts growing, the leaves will absorb excess water. Same thing happens in the Fall after the foliage is gone, the excess water stays on top of the muddy clay soil, though the muddy season in the Fall is shorter.

The problem with Ukrainian Spring offensive prospects is that Bakhmut, and now Avdivka have been sapping their reserves, they are throwing the kitchen sink at them. They've been trying to use fresh conscripts to hold the fort in Bakhmut, but these poor saps are not lasting very long, which is forcing Ukrainian brass to commit more resources in a desperate effort to hold on.

There is allegedly a conflict between NATO brass and Ukrainian command, the former wanting Ukraine to sacrifice Bakhmut in order to preserve all their chances for the Spring offensive, which most likely will take place in the Zaporizhe area. This might be the last roll of the dice for Ukraine, whose resources (and those of its NATO backers) have been dwindling in this war of attrition.

The choice of Zaporizhe as a target for the offensive is dictated by the fact that this is the only area where loss of territory would have bad strategic consequences for Russia, potentially cutting off the land bridge to Crimea.

Some analysts are saying that Russia is going to keep the pressure up and possibly mount attacks on other fronts in order to sap the strength of the Spring offensive, focusing on areas made newly more vulnerable due to Ukraine transferring reinforcements to Bakhmut.

Very true, but especially true when the soldiers in question are put in a situation where their prospects of winning are very limited, as is the case for this platoon of poor middle-aged under-trained, under-equipped and under-supported Ukrainian conscripts. These are the troops with a life expectancy of 4 hours, 50 yr old farmers, car mechanics or store keepers who are being used as cannon fodder. This is what the "to the last Ukrainian" picture looks like.

That Ukrainian platoon leader complaining about what his men are being put through risks being court-martialed by the Azov zealots sitting in the rear guards, but you can see he clearly cares a whole lot more about the men under his command than their leaders, enough so to face severe punishment from SBU types.

Putin says Russia will "respond accordingly" if Ukraine gets depleted uranium shells from U.K., claiming they have "nuclear component"

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday that Moscow would "respond accordingly" if Britain gives Ukraine military supplies, including armor-piercing ammunition containing depleted uranium.

"[The U.K.] announced not only the supply of tanks to Ukraine, but also shells with depleted uranium," Putin told reporters after talks at the Kremlin with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. "I would like to note that if all this happens, then Russia will have to respond accordingly ... The collective West is already starting to use weapons with a nuclear component."

The United Nations Environment Program has described depleted uranium as a "chemically and radiologically toxic heavy metal." Depleted uranium munitions were used in conflicts in the former Yugoslavia and Iraq, and were suspected of being a possible cause of "Gulf War syndrome," a collection of debilitating symptoms suffered by veterans of the 1990-91 war.

Anti-nuclear organization CND condemned the decision to send the ammunition to Ukraine, calling it an "additional environmental and health disaster for those living through the conflict" as toxic or radioactive dust can be released on impact.

"CND has repeatedly called for the U.K. government to place an immediate moratorium on the use of depleted uranium weapons and to fund long-term studies into their health and environmental impacts," said CND general secretary Kate Hudson.
