Tragic. Here's a thread he wrote back in July of last year before he was arrested again. Well worth reading about his torture.

"Attached to these tweets is the full indictment against me, both the original Ukrainian and English translation. As you can see, even the prosecutor admits I committed no crime against property or any person. And I certainly provided no aid or intelligence to the Russians."

"My indictment explicitly states that all I did was discuss publicly known facts about the warthe epitome of free speech in a democracy. But Zelensky's Ukraine is no democracyit is a thieving, corrupt, murderous gangster regime PRETENDING to be a polite "western" democracy."
...
"As you can see by the indictment, the video I made that really chapped their ass was "Ukraine: A Primer", which gives the historical background to the conflictwhere I state outright that this invasion wasn't out of the blue. That indeed, it was provoked by the Kiev regime."

I think this is the video he's referring to. A great counterpoint to the propaganda we're drenched in in the US.

Gonzalo was a native Californian who lived in Ukraine since 2016 IIRC. A really interesting guy. RIP

Putin is so desperate to replace the troops he's losing in his meat waves in Ukraine that he's started cutting off the heat in Russian prisons in order to convince prisoners that they should freeze to death in Ukraine instead of a gulag. Nobody is surprised.

To be fair, it's not just a problem in prisons, even in Moscow region they are having trouble heating their homes. They also recently announced they will have rolling blackouts for the next two months. Remember when I told you guys that this was was making Russia stronger? The evidence just keeps piling up.

This post sheds some insight on another method Putin is using to replenish his meat waves. Russia's burned through a massive number from it's actual semi-trained military and has been forced more and more to resort to sending untrained soldiers who have to buy their own equipment and have no interest in fighting Putin's stupid war of aggression.

Finally, a reminder that Russian tanks (what's left of them) are absolute garbage. There is video going around of Russia's most "modern" tank getting smoked by a Bradley (which for those who don't know, is an infantry fighting vehicle which isn't designed to go toe to toe with any tank). For sense of scale, T-90 tank guns use 125mm shells that weight ~45 lbs. The Bradley's gun is designed for cover fire and uses 1 lb shells.

Undoubtedly true.

I'll admit it's a bit of a guilty pleasure to refute U2S comic book takes on this war but hey it's a slow Saturday afternoon.

-Russian tanks have performed very well on the front. Their design is adapted to the Russian steppe and conditions, while western tanks like the Leopard, Challenger and Abrams are too heavy and they are high maintenance.

Here's ONE Russian tank taking on and destroying 8 Ukrainian tanks and Bradley AFVs in one fell solo swoop, this kind of performance is enabled by the Russian tanks' high firing rate automatic loading system:

-So PUTIN dropping the thermostat in Russian jails to 50F or 60F is going to cause prisoners to enroll and fight outside in -10F midwinter temperatures? Is that really what they're trying to sell here??

-"To this day, thousands of people across Russia remain without heating."
Thousands, in a country of 150M, in what is the coldest stretch of the year (mid-January).

Perhaps the Russians should have had Enron manage their power grid instead?

They're increasingly relying on female soldiers, sending them to the front, because they're starting to run out of men, whose average age on the front is now 43.

Ukrainian military training doesn't seem optimal:

I looked up the Ukrainian Kill List, and sure enough, American pundit Gonzalo Lira, who just passed away in Ukraine's gulag system after being detained and tortured for 8 months, is (was) on the list, founded by one of U2S' favorite Twitter go-to sources, this creep.

They accuse him of posting highly treasonous content like these posts here, which basically report what goes on in Zelensky's Ukraine:

Russia's demography is in better shape than that of most European countries. Its current fertility rate is above 1.8, which is not spectacular in absolute terms, but much better than other industrialized countries like Germany, Italy, Spain, S. Korea, Japan etc which are in the low 1. range. As a reference, the current fertility rate in the US is 1.64, lower than Russia's, but you don't see The Economist decrying the demographic decline of native western populations...

Russia's current birth rate, while still slightly below replacement, is among the highest in Europe. Its fertility rate of 1.82 places Russia at the top of Europe, just above France and Ireland.

https://www.macrotrends.net/countries/RUS/russia/fertility-rate

https://www.statista.com/statistics/612074/fertility-rates-in-european-countries/

The current stagnation in absolute numbers observed in Russian demography is mainly the result of the 1990s collapse echo, there were fewer births in that period due to the destruction of the Russian economy and society through the neoliberal dystopia in the Yeltsin era.

Technically though, the Russian population is actually increasing, as the Russian quarter to a third of Ukraine is being annexed into Russia.

Yea, I posted about this a few times. This dumb war has exacerbated their birth rate issues - they've seen decreasing birth rates the last few years and 2024 isn't projected to be any better. When you combine that with the massive brain drain over the last few decades, it just compounds the problems.

They've tried to address it by stealing Ukrainian children but it won't stem the tide. Young men have fled Russia to avoid the war but also for better opportunities elsewhere. This also serves to reduce immigration of young workers. Russia is, to put it mildly, an uncompetitive destination for high quality immigrants.

Unless you benefit from the corrupt criminal kleptocracy; why would you be there if you could go somewhere else?

Here's a link showing the year over year decrease in births they are experiencing: https://www.macrotrends.net/countries/RUS/russia/birth-rate#

The parts of Ukraine where the Russians are are not hostile to Russia, that's why there hasn't been much of that so far. If the Russians ventured into the central-western part of Ukraine, they would get a lot of pushback.

The average Ukrainian is starting to get some serious war fatigue and buyer's remorse with Zelensky. Here is a striking video that shows the members of a Ukrainian company almost in unison refusing to be deployed to the front, these guys risk getting court martialed:

Ukrainians have been told that the Russian army is weak and poorly equipped, they were heavily propagandized . 2 years into the war public perception is shifting dramatically:

Hospital sees 30% rise in seriously wounded Ukrainian soldiers, says doctor
As many as 100 hurt soldiers arrive daily at a Dnipro hospital, a doctor said.

https://abcnews.go.com/International/hospital-sees-30-rise-wounded-ukrainian-soldiers-doctor/story?id=106197525
Quote:

DNIPRO, Ukraine -- The number of heavily wounded soldiers being treated at one of Ukraine's largest trauma hospitals has risen by as much as 30% in the past few weeks, according to the chief doctor there.

Dr. Sergii Ryzhenko told ABC News that the Mechnikov Hospital in the city of Dnipro, a few hours' drive from the fighting, is now receiving between 40 and 100 seriously wounded men each day, with his team performing between 50 and 100 surgical operations in any 24-hour period.
Many of those procedures are amputations, he said.

This war is going to massively change how modern militaries are equipped.

More addition by subtraction for Russia. Ukraine destroyed another of these AWACS last year by drone and Russia doesn't have a huge supply. But remember, anything that hurts them makes them stronger.

NYT starting to report the truth about Ukraine's military prospects.

'Russia Regains Upper Hand in Ukraine's East as Kyiv's Troops Struggle' NYT, 13 Jan 2024 https://nytimes.com/2024/01/13/world/europe/ukraine-russia-war.html…

"Ukraine's military prospects are looking bleak. Western military aid is no longer assured at the same levels as years past. Ukraine's summer counteroffensive in the south is over, having failed to meet any of its objectives."

"And now, Russian troops are on the attack, especially in the country's east. The town of Marinka has all but fallen. Avdiivka is being slowly encircled. A push on Chasiv Yar, near Bakhmut, is expected. Farther north, outside Kupiansk, the fighting has barely slowed since the fall."

"For now, Ukraine is in a perilous position. The problems afflicting its military have been exacerbated since the summer. Ukrainian soldiers are exhausted by long stretches of combat and shorter rest periods. The ranks, thinned by mounting casualties, are only being partly replenished, often with older and poorly trained recruits."

Great news for all of the conservative Putin supporters - Russia is welcoming you with open arms. Russia's demographic problems are so bad that they think a bunch of miserable 60 year old men will help them out lol.

Quote:

Russia is pining to build on its budding relationship with American conservativesliterally.

Amid Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine, and the American Republican Party splitting on its support for the defending nation, Russian authorities apparently are launching construction of a special village outside Moscow dedicated to conservative-minded Americans and Canadians.

State outlet RIA Novosti reported the news Thursday. Timur Beslangurov, a Russian immigration lawyer, said the village would harbor the likes of some "200 families [who] want to emigrate for ideological reasons."

That's not all, apparently. Beslangurov claims tens of thousands of people with no Russian roots would like to move to Russia.

"The reason is the inculcation of radical values: Today they have 70 genders; it is not known what will happen next," he said.

The Russian lawyer claimed that some of those tens of thousands want to move to Russia because they are traditional Catholics who "very strongly believe in the prophecy that Russia will remain the only Christian country in the world."

To all the people still pretending like Putin is looking for peace with Ukraine and the US got in the way, former president Medvedev, who is still quite influential and a high ranking official on their security council, has once again said the quiet part out loud. As Putin has always said, they don't believe Ukraine or its culture have a right to exist. This war will only end when Russia is defeated or the west stops supporting Ukraine.

Everyone knew that Putin overstated the capabilities of their flagship T-90 tank, but no one realized it would be so easily defeated by a Bradley's 25mm gun. This is a repeated occurrence.

Russian shills told us that this war (sorry, special military operation) would make it impossible for Europe to heat its homes. Instead, Europe's natural gas stores are full, US LNG imports to Europe are at record levels and Russians are freezing due to their garbage infrastructure failing.

Finally, a hero to the shills has passed away. I've seen some chatter in other channels pretending like he was some freedom fighter or citizen journalist. Sounds like he was a natural born grifter and Russian propaganda was his latest score.

This is the sort of garbage that Putin shills are white knighting.

I'm not happy this guy died, but most of his problems were of his own making. He made the choice to move to a country and s***-talk their own government while actively supporting the enemy that was invading them. What did he think was going to happen? Kind of seems like he died of something he was already having issues with anyway.

Honestly, he was such a shady grifter for his entire career that I can't even be sure now that he's actually dead. I wouldn't put it past him to have perpetrated another hoax. Probably not, but can I rule it out?

Americans take for granted that we have freedom of speech. It's certainly not something that exists in most of the world, certainly not to the extent we have it.

This guy chose to be a Russian shill promoting Russia's war within Ukraine knowing what the laws were. He FAFO'd. I felt much the same way about Britney Griner, although in that case she was clearly treated differently and worse by Russia because she was a prominent American.

It sounds like Ukraine was far more lenient with Lira than Russia would have been for similar transgressions. Neither one offers the sort of first amendment protections we take for granted.

In Griner's case, you can also argue that American women's basketball players had probably gotten used to being able to do what they want in Russia and not be bothered. Then Putin decided to attack Ukraine and destroy diplomatic ties with the US, everything changed very rapidly, and she got caught up in that. This isn't like Lira repeatedly breaking laws in Ukraine after being explicitly told to leave.

Nice bit of whataboutism there, yeah they gulaged Lira and let him rot to death in a dungeon, but in Russia, it would have been even worse!!!

Lira was a permanent resident of Ukraine, living there with his Ukrainian wife and children. He was jailed for nothing more than criticizing the Kiev regime, pointing out that they had disappeared and assassinated many political dissidents. This is a regime that has a kill list that includes children whose only crime was to have vacationed in Crimea with their families.

Lira was tortured in Ukrainian jail, he has had his rib broken and his eye scratched by a toothpick with his torturer threatening to stab his eyeball. His father and others pleaded the State Dept to have him extradited from Ukraine, he could have been saved with one phone call, they begged for months but no US official lifted a finger for Lira, because like the Kiev regime they also considered him to be ideologically transgressive.

Quote:

How do you manage to pack so many lies in one sentence? He wasn't told to leave, he was prevented from leaving the country and arrested while trying to flee this dictatorship. And the only laws he ever broke was being critical of the Kiev regime.
