In America, we hold a presidential election every four years -- even during wartime.

We held an election during the Civil War.
We held an election during World War II.
Before President Zelenskyy decides to lecture the American President again, he should hold an election too.
The Parliamentary system works differently than our version of Democracy. They always have irregularly scheduled elections. Also, the North was largely in tact and not invaded during the Civil War and the entire US as intact during WW2 so it was relatively easy to run an election. Ukraine's infrastructure is in shambles, many of its citizens are in Russian occupied territory and many of its citizens are abroad, all due to the war.bear2034 said:In America, we hold a presidential election every four years -- even during wartime.

Want to know why Trump called Zelensky a Dictator? Here are the FACTS:
— DC_Draino (@DC_Draino) February 19, 2025
He’s in year 6 of his 5 year term
Declared martial law Feb 2022 and has banned elections since then
Banned 11 political parties
Passed law in 2022 to censor journalists and combined all news into 1 gov’t…

It's basically that it's okay if you just say you're doing it and do it out in the open. The problem was hiding it.bearister said:movielover said:

The dollars flowing into Trump coffers, that will exponentially dwarf the dollars Biden is accused of swindling, will be covered on Fox News, right?
"Profiting from the presidency. This isn't illegal. But it defies a long history of unspoken presidential behavior. Most presidents avoided any actual or perception of commingling of their presidential power with personal business deals. Former President Biden took a public beating from Trump and his supporters after it was revealed Biden's son and brother profited off his name and actions.
Three days before taking office, Trump launched a cryptocurrency that, on paper, was worth as much as $50 billion for the Trump family, depending on how you count coins not yet released to market. (Most of the meme coin's value has been erased since then.) No limits keep foreign leaders, or anyone seeking influence, from buying coins to benefit the Trump family.
As The New York Times reported this week, Trump held an Oval Office meeting to help boost a merger between the PGA and LIV pro golf behemoths. Trump's family is a major LIV financial partner."

Call me old fashioned but selling influence over US government policy and expenditures to FOREIGN parties and running the cash through multiple family members is a much greater abuse of the office and a heckuva lot more damaging.

Perhaps they should implement instead a Citizens United setup with multi-billion dollar election campaigns in a duopoly system and an electoral college with electronic voting and unverified mail-in ballots in Russia too??
They've tried western-style democracy in the 1990s, set up by western NGOs and advisers, which resulted in a 45% poverty rate with millions of Russia literally withering to death and their state assets and natural resources getting syphoned up by oligarchs backed by western interests. That's how Putin came to power. His polling numbers above BTW are from Levada, a liberal outfit that isn't aligned with him.

They're entitled to ban foreign NGOs and candidates backed by foreign nations whose goal, stated openly, is to break up their country. That is the nature of their current and recent elections.
Very well, just want to make sure folks here are aligned on what should be the end goal (even if it's years away).Cal88 said:
That is where they could be headed in a decade or two, not unlike the path of say S. Korea or Taiwan, which were very authoritarian governments (much more so than the current Russian system) up to the 00s. The Russians' current government is also a bit like Singapore's, which has effectively had a one party system for over 50 years now IIRC.

How about a free and fair election where Putin does not kill, jail, and intimidate his potential opponents? That would be a good start.Cal88 said:sycasey said:This is not really an answer to the question.Cal88 said:

Openly saying that Zelensky started the war is the best way to get the Russians to end the war.
