The starting point is often either exposure to propaganda, fear/hatred/shame they believe was caused by a third party (often the US) and misunderstanding another community or population or religion or political system. Often of course we see more than one of those together.

If you look at some of the whackadoodles on this board you will see people at various places along their journey. I'm sure that none of them will turn into terrorists but many people exactly like them already have in the last few years and others will continue to. People who used to be "normal" conservatives posting views consistent with McCain or Romney and garden variety Fox News types as recently as a year ago can now be found posting obviously false and manipulative propaganda, often state sponsored by sworn enemies of the US. People who never would have dreamed of treading against our country a few years ago are now openly supporting a traitor in the military who was found distributing state secrets and regularly side with war criminals and state media in support of a nation attacking our allies. The trigger events for US conservatives have been Trump, COVID, immigration, anti-racism, the erosion of white privilege, the decline of the white working class family and a few others. The triggers for liberals have been Trump, climate change, continued opposition to anti-racism, government support of big businesses at the expense of citizens, unfairness in taxation and lack of a social safety net. We see it on both sides of the spectrum across this country but it's far more prominent among conservatives and in this board it's pretty clearly a one-sided issue.

If you look it's pretty easy to spit how vitriolic and bitter they have become as they get deeper into their radicalization. I hope that they are able to take care of themselves and return to a more normal worldview and posture but unfortunately we see far more people being radicalized than de-radicalized so I don't think we are going to see a decline in the problem anytime soon.
