The scale of Trump's mendacity is so unparalleled that you almost have to respect it.

I think he gets convicted, fined, which means nothing and continues lying and convincing stupid Americans, and ultimately wins because Biden is totally unconvincing as the 80+ year old he is.

This country is changing racially too fast and people are all for blaming others, a la 1933 Germany.

I fear trump changes so many laws and norms that we never get back to that great 1950's vision he had.

It's a horror show.

I know this case upside down now, and it's not reading to the viewing public with any clarity. No feed, it's up to interpreters - people can't follow the truth. Spin on Foxnews continues unabated. People are clueless.

I don't want to misinterpret what you are saying, so can you please clarify what you mean when you say "This country is changing racially too fast"?

Do you mean "changing racially too fast" for Tucker Swanson McNear Carlson or Stephen Miller?

Allow me to properly place commas.

This country is changing racially, too, fast; and people are all for blaming others, a la 1933 Germany.

I think that's what was intended coming out of my head.
Thank you for asking and not jumping down my throat.
While I'm blue-eyed and brown haired with all Northern European roots (mostly uk and Ireland type) from long ago immigrants to the northern colonies, I also recognize that we are all "out of Africa" immigrants, and this current era mixing going on is just a re-meeting of cousins under the big tent of humanity.

The US was racist at the turn of the century when eastern and southern Europeans were coming into Ellis Island. Slavs, Poles, Italians, Russian Jews. They were "different" from prior northern and western immigrants.

Today the "different" includes Asians, Arabs, Latinos.

Does it really matter?
We're all just a bunch of cousins in the same family tree.

I have a friend who quotes a book. The aliens fly by planet earth and scan our activities. They witness us killing each other and report back, "No, no signs of intelligent life here."

Thanks for the clarification about this country racially changing -- which is certainly true.

As an aside, when I got my degree in 1983, there was only one other Latino graduating with me in Math. Whenever I get back on campus, I hope to attend a few classes and hopefully see a few more Latinos ....

My avatar was perhaps allowed because it shows a criminal in an orange jump suit.

I was on campus yesterday to buy my parents (step) grandma and grandpa bear shirts. They are involved in the campus activities still and my dad and mom met there (along with his parents).

At first, they thought it was because they are bears and also grandparents. But I had to point out that this is another new chit to put on their lapel, because my daughter will be attending in September.

Anyways, in the student store, I saw mostly only Asians. Everyone wearing robes from a graduation ceremony. The place was packed. I was surprised so looked it up. This is what ChatGPT said, though we are far from 100%, so…

Here's a breakdown based on the most recent data available:
Asian: 29.9%
White: 23.9%
Hispanic or Latino: 17%
Two or More Races: 5.35%
Black or African American: 2.53%
American Indian or Alaska Native: 0.149%
Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islanders: 0.133%

I'll have to look elsewhere for truth, but the point is, you certainly will see more of your "closer" cousins.

Yes, but I just hope more of those Latinos are in the Math department (or other STEM major) than when I was on campus.

Fascinating that you as a Bearister have this opinion.

To this layman, "Beyond a reasonable doubt" does not mean "Beyond any doubt".

Do you really believe this case hasn't been proven "Beyond a reasonable doubt" when Michael Cohen is only a corroborating witness?

Don't worry, the Top Dog or Mission Burrito is still on me, win or lose ....

Edit: Or, perhaps you are implying that even if "proven", there is enough doubt for one juror to say "I don't know if 'The Boss' is guilty". Shadowing John Gotti?

Even OJ, OJ!!!, got off mainly because Furman was caught lying. And the lie didn't even have anything to do with the evidence. Don't underestimate how much dumber we've gotten as a people. And these folks that comprise juries are not hand picked by talented, corrupt lawyers for their brains and honor.

tRump worships the mob and the mob template. John Gotti and his son knew how to get mistrials. You only have to intimidate one juror…..but tRump may not even have to resort to that tactic. Millions of Americans support him. I find it hard to believe there isn't at least one juror that didn't start that trial on Day 1 knowing that there was no way they were going to convict tRump of anything when the stakes are so high in the election: Good vs Evil.

Yes, the case has been proven beyond a reasonable doubt….but some jurors that want to feel good about themselves and pretend they are not engaging in jury nullification, interpret any doubt as reasonable, even the fantasy, not based on the evidence, unbelievable "doubt" created by defense counsel.

Other jurors are never going to convict, regardless of the evidence and applicable law (I.e. secret MAGAs).

Finally, some jurors, and their family members are addicted to oxygen and thus refusing to vote guilty seems like a good move.

O.J. got off because of jury nullification resulting from years of built up resentment caused by systemic abuse by the LAPD. Everyone knew he was guilty, and Furman provided the perfect excuse. Do I think the LAPD tried to make a solid case even better with unethical conduct? Yep. Do I think O.J. was guilty, yep, just like every member of his Dream Team did.

Do you think that the Dream Team ever convinced Robert Kardashian that his buddy was innocent?

Given the insanity I have witnessed in this country the last 8 years, I cannot dismiss this view.

I have begun to think about how I can be financially nimble to survive the coming chaos.

These things come and go cyclically.

Several guys at the Oakland YMCA told me that after the verdict was announced…prefaced with "Everybody knows he did it but…" I was working bingo duty at my son's grammar school shortly after the verdict and a father of one of my son's classmates who played with OJ in Buffalo told me that he and other former teammates believed OJ was good for it. I interpreted that to mean OJ had a bad temper.

It appears that Cohen has just admitted to embedding a theft from Trump in the same $420,000 amount that is the bull of the Stormy Daniels repayment.

To review:

here's the math we knew before today:

Cohen had paid:
130,000 to Daniel's lawyer via wire.
50,000 to Red Finch
= 180,000 needed to repay Cohen for money Cohen had previously shelled out on Trump's behalf.

Double it to 360,000 to cover takes. (NY state plus Fed tax brackets =50%.)

Add a taxable 60,000 bonus to Cohen for handling it.

= $420,000
Divided by 12 months = $35,000

Cohen subsequently received a bunch of $35,000 checks paid to Cohen monthly signed by Trump in the Oval Office - these were booked as legal services and disguised to look like a legal retainer. But Cohen never did any work for Trump during the time that the checks were dated.

Trump could have simply REPAID Cohen the $180,000 for Stormy and Red Finch but a direct paper trail tying them together was undesirable. So, the typically penny-pincher, negotiator of bills and financial overseer of all checks over $10,000 (as testimony from accounting staff last week covered) designed this cover-up scheme - even though it cost him far more to do so (the doubling up for taxes).

But, the question remained, what was Red Finch?

Red Finch was the firm Cohen paid for two things:

1) when Trump announced he was running for President in 2015 - when he came down the Trump Tower escalator and first said Mexicans were horribly flooding across the border - Red Finch paid people to show up and cheer.

2) Red Finch also engaged in online polling or social media influence campaigns.

Trump needed to repay Cohen.
Again, repayments are not subject to income taxation. But trump wanted to distance himself, so he paid double by pretending it was legal services rendered (income for Cohen). That is fraud. But a misdemeanor fraud.

It becomes a felony because it was in furtherance of another crime of affecting the election.

However, today we learned that Cohen lied to Weisselberg and Trump about how much he paid Red Finch! He apparently only paid Red Finch $20,000 and not $50k, and thus pocketed the rest for himself.

If Trump was such a wise examiner of all outgoing checks, how was Cohen able to fool him into over repaying. Essentially, Cohen is a thief and Trump is a dumbass - some jurors might have doubt about Trump knowing what he was doing in committing the alleged felony.

The whole case may be over now.
Trump will declare a setup, victimhood, victory.
WW3, here we come. Hitler is back in charge.

Michael Cohen was asked why he took a $50,000 pay back from former Trump Org. CFO Allen Weisselberg for Red Finch, even though he only paid the guy $20,000.

"For a long time, I had been telling him about the 50,000 so that I could collect it for the president of Red Finch," Cohen said.

"I was angered because of the reduction in the bonus, and so I just felt it was almost like self-help. I wasn't going to let him have the benefit (of) this way as well. I wasn't going to correct the conversation I was having with Allen about it. I had not only protected him to the best that I could, but I had also laid out money to Red Finch a year and a half earlier and again $130,000 to have my bonus cut by two-thirds was very upsetting to say the least," Cohen continued.

Hoffinger then asked, "but you admitted on cross that it was wrong."

"It was," Cohen says.

Cohen explains a smidge of Team Trump's efforts to CHEAT the 2016 election.

LYING LIARS LIE
DEN OF THIEVES

Prosecutor Susan Hoffinger asked Michael Cohen what Red Finch did for Trump.

Cohen said Trump was polling low in the CNBC poll.

"And it upset him," Cohen says."And he had me come to his office and provide me a sheet of paper that showed it."

"I reached out to Red Finch who assured me he was able to go through the acquisitions of IP addresses to create an algorithm that would ensure Mr. Trump would rise and rise significantly into this poll," Cohen added.

Cohen is now looking directly at the jury as he's answering Hoffinger's question to explain the Red Finch situation. Cohen said Trump wanted to be number one in the poll but after Red Finch's work, he ended up at nine.

The former Trump fixer said "despite cheating" Trump felt he didn't get his money's worth for the work.

Cohen added that Trump did not pay Red Finch because CNBC ended up not moving forward with this poll, "and so he didn't feel he had gotten the benefit" for the services they had provided.
