This is a full-on word salad. If we wanted Canada's cooperation then we shouldn't be antagonizing them so much.MinotStateBeav said:
Trump isn't really cozying up to Putin but he recognizes the reality of the world we live in. They see the world for what it will look like when the arctic passages open up and the United States could potentially live in a world with Russia to our East and China fighting to our North for arctic resources. If things go badly we could be looking at a 2 front war. With Canada being our soft underbelly. They are trying to peel Russia from being in China's sphere of influence or at least neutral and also looking for more cooperation with Canada on defense but also bringing up the idea of becoming a state, which is why they are using tariffs because Canada knows it can't deal with equalizing trade. They aren't looking for the US to be globally dominant, but instead being hemispherically protected. I think you will see South America become a much bigger priority for the Trump administration as well.

The interesting part of this thread is that many people are criticizing Trump's Ukraine policy - but no one has proposed an alternate strategy.
Like others, I see Putin for the evil despot he is. I want Russia to lose the war. I don't want Putin to be rewarded for his aggression and don't have any confusion as to his responsibility for starting the war (and prior invasions). But what I want doesn't magically manifest into reality.
As I posted many months ago, Biden's approach was utterly lacking in any real strategy. He didn't allow Ukraine to fight to win (e.g., withholding offensive weapons). . but poured hundreds of billions of dollars into fighting a halfway war. He refused/prevented any oversight of the $$ flows into a country with rampant corruption. And he never articulated his end game or how he would achieve it. He never articulated what the US strategic interest was and how he would advance that.
What are the alternatives to Trump negotiating a cease fire giving Putin "something"? The US cannot (and should not) continue to pour money into a lost cause that at best will be a bloody stalemate. And the US citizenry will not support the war on that basis.
Ultimately, the US has many strategic interests and domestic needs that are more important than Ukraine. That is the reality.
For all the criticism of Trump, no one here has presented a better strategic option.
What is the evidence that Trump opened with "everything Putin wants"? Putin wants all of Ukraine and probably some additional countries (Poland).sycasey said:BearGoggles said:

I tend to agree that the war is probably at a stalemate right now and do not object to peace negotiations. I do object to opening with basically "everything Putin wants" as an offer and to cutting Ukraine out of the process. I think not doing the latter would be a better strategic approach.
Unless you want to ally with Russia over the European democracies, then it's a perfect strategy.
I don't agree with that, but very well.BearGoggles said:What is the evidence that Trump opened with "everything Putin wants"? Putin wants all of Ukraine and probably some additional countries (Poland).sycasey said:BearGoggles said:

In terms of cutting out Zelenskyy initially, it was necessary and appropriate: (i) to start with Putin given that Trump has previously met with Zelenskyy but had no dialogue with Putin; and (ii) because Zelenskyy has been taking unrealistic and unreasonable positions, all while acting as if he was the power broker who would never compromise. Zelenskyy's act has grown tired and I personally don't appreciate the way he has suggested Ukraine is entitled to never ending financial support. He's in no position to be making demands.
