Canada has long been integrated with the US energy grid as provider of cheaper hydroelectricity, Trump is a bit clueless here.

He has a genius for saying things that resonates with the base he wants to target. It's almost incomprehensible that a New York City billionaire can gain favor with rural, blue collar folks. He has a genius for rallying support in his party and suppressing dissent. He identifies people's weaknesses, isolates those people and destroys them. It really is amazing and one of the most interesting questions in American politics in at least 50 years.

Now to be fair I think that 40% of party members are voting for a dead animal who has a party label behind their name. He emerged from the Republican primary because of some VERY odd circumstances. So the fact that he got elected twice isn't really THAT surprising. There just are NOT that many swing voters and the parties right now are so eveningly match.

What I DON"T get is the lets say 10% or so of the population who are attached to him at such a visceral level. That is really what is new/hasn't been seen since maybe FDR/

Good news, his life expectancy just based on actuarial tables isn't good and it isn't at ALL clear to me that JD would be worse ((and he can't command the loyalty (and fear) that Trump engenders.

Good new number 2. IF the republic (and our 401ks) can survive for another year or so then the dyanmics of 2028 being contested by BOTH Ds and Rs should lead to some opposition to Trump - if only to carve out a lane in what will be a crowded primary. I just can not see JD "clearing the field" and he can't run on the record if things are bad....

I couldn't find the numbers, but Wiki (no friend to Republicans or conservatives) says 28% of liberals voted for Reagan in 1980, when Reagan won all but 6 states. In 1984, Reagan won 49 out of 50 states, and that year 29% of liberals voted for Reagan.
