S&P futures are down 3.5%

These down 1% days are for the birds. I was just thinking a true crash is a few 5%ers mixed in there.

Circuit breakers, panic selling.
We haven't at all seen any true panic set in. Not at all.

There's going to come some truly shocking panic at some point. I think Trump is going to find it.

Feb 18 2025
S&P500
6,144 close

A 20% decline off that peak would be at level of: 4,915.
That was last seen in Jan 2024.

I think we could easily see that. No problem.
Yesterday's close was 5670, and 10% from peak would be 5529, which is 8% down.

I'm no technical analyst, but the first support is sub 4k. And it's interesting to note that Trumps pre Covid high was around 3350.

WHAT IS THE SIGNAL OR RATIONALE FOR HIGHER ?
I see none. He's going to slow the economy real fast.

I think he thinks he's just skimming off the top, like a commission on all activity, but instead history tells us it's going to dampen speed of M1. GDP down.

Well, it'll be a good case study for the history books.

You elsewhere mentioned McKinley and I did d not read that link. I didn't see McKinley in the opening so I flipped elsewhere.
I know nothing about McKinley, so, let's start with some random witchy college student:

Typical.

And these tariffs aren't going to ZERO anytime soon.
Trump has been obsessed with them for decades.

I heard an economist today predict that this will cut imports by - $900 million.

I've turned on CNBC squawk box to hear them discuss it.
Joe Kernan vacillating between continuing his Trump support and not.
I used to have them on 100% daily and so know the tenor of the show. Then the NYC brokers all behave en masse, wanting to have palatable opinions, while in reality most are lemmings. Sheep. Go along with the crowd.

That Wall Street crowd is very heavily dominated by republican affiliation , and so it interesting whenever I hear criticism or nuanced concern over things.

I imagine Kernan would ride with Trump all the way to 3000. Selected criticism, sure, but not much better than that.

One of the problems with the US political system is how it can swing back and forth every 4 or 8 years. This creates instability for investors.

Like, if you are a domestic manufacturer, maybe you see an opening with new tariff hurting competitors, are you honestly going to invest in building that new production line when you doubt that these tariffs are going to stick?

I haven't had CNBC on in years.
I get my news from Bloomberg and Dow Jones.

These "cult" members are idiots.
Not just Joe Kernan.

Our Treasury Secretary (Bessent) is an out of touch Billionaire that has lied twice now (about tariffs being merely used as a negotiating tactic and how when imposed they would be reciprocal) and our Commerce Secretary (Lutnick) is making him look smart, and that's saying an awful lot.

But I'm sure the Trump apologists here like Oski, Bear2034, BearGoggles, Zippergate, Movielover, and Minot State are just as clueless as Bessent and Lutnick.

They'll keep drinking more Kool-Aid and spinning.

Trump's rationale backed by this list, which is a lie.

Former USTR Michael Froman (Obama) explained that Trump people used a formula to arrive at the reciprocal tariff number. The first number is apparently derived by a percentage of imports vs exports to said country. Kernan added that Trump admin backed into the number they wanted.

Well, it says Vietnam has a 91% tariff against US imports? Is that true, or is our trade balance 91% going from Vietnam to USA?

Trump's logic for this is %*^#ing crazy. We are the planets largest per capita consumer, and one of the largest populations as well.

I really hate Trump because he applies faulty thinking, lies, misinformation, manipulation to everything. You simply can't work with someone like that.

So he's going to create all sorts of distortions. And everyone globally suffers the consequences.

Take a motorcar to nowhere in particular.

I used to favor Bloomberg on the trading desk but the channel would get changed back.

When you say Dow Jones, you are referring to WSJ and Barrons printed news?

I used to read the WSJ daily on Bart. Boy that paper has thinned out!!!

PS: I approve of the use of the word cult in response to what I described. Party affiliation is so strong. It's supposed to be policy only, but politics gets injected on cnbc with regularity - and I don't mean a market analysis of politics, I see agenda pushing commentary, of course.

And it's nonsensical because it flip flops with the party. Republicans were all about free trade growing up. Letting the market hand figure how pricing and production levels. Well, those days are long gone. I find the GOP economic policies to be a goddam joke.

I disagree.

The WSJ has not "thinned" out and it is as great as ever.
The Weekend Edition is also a terrific read. But it will cost you nearly $700 a year.
It's pretty clear to me that no one on these boards subscribes to it. Especially the MAGA MORON crowd.

Clearly you are not only brainwashed but an idiot when it comes to, well, many things.

I've seen a lot of market ups and downs, and they all get sifted through in the aftermath as folks weigh what happened.

This decline was totally predictable, and in fact I'm surprised didn't happen weeks prior.

It's going to continue, bud.
Because the stock market is a forward looking indicator. And the future looks crappy now that global stability is shaking.

Better hope additional shoes don't drop. Often times one problem leads to another, and a cascade of problems occurs.
Consider the delicate nature of Fed bond fund auctions which prop up the entire government and economy. Countries may opt out of holding USD, and POP, bye bye birdie.

Trump is playing this game recklessly.
Once they stop buying, he will threaten all out default, not to payback what it's already owed. Blackmail.
Okay, I'm pontificating, but he'd do that. He's incredibly dangerous.
And if it came to that, you'd side with him. Because you're a brainwashed fool.
Right?

Where will you draw the line on him?

This is how I feel about you and the stupid ass MAGA crowd who placates a f'ing moron like Trump. Enjoy the rage.

Yes, I often like to rant about how wrong it is for stock market performance to be attributed to the current president. Normally, they inherit a situation and as the stock market goes through its somewhat normal cycles, they are a (+/-) victim to it rather than responsible for it.

However, in this situation, Trump has enacted policies which themselves are out of the norm, and which themselves are responsible for what we are seeing here. It's the most asinine thing I've ever seen.

TRUMP DID THIS!!!!
