Gavin Newsom
@GavinNewsom
"The President of the United States just called for the arrest of a sitting Governor.

This is a day I hoped I would never see in America.

I don't care if you're a Democrat or a Republican this is a line we cannot cross as a nation this is an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism."

I believe you are mistaken. The recitation of events I listed was taken from publicly available sources.

Your linked article is not specific to LA. Also, more than 1 thing can be simultaneously true. ICE was executing valid search warrants and potentially being creative about collateral arrests. The latter does not negate the former. This is like entering a home to execute a search warrant and finding two other people cutting a large volume of coke. They get arrested too.

Collateral "arrests" are perfectly legal AND appropriate. Note that "arrests" does not necessarily mean criminal proceedings. It also means civil detentions and deportations for immigration violations.
Except the NIJC, a group much closer to this than you or me, disagrees with you pretty strongly.

Not exactly a reputable unbiased source. I'll pass on believing anything they claim:

"The National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) defends the rights of immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers.

Our advocacy and legal services teams keep families together, free people from the dangers of immigrant detention, and prevent asylum seekers and long-time community members from being deported based on unjust laws and illegal government actions."

Illegal immigration became a thing when the borders were secured in the 1950s / 1960s preventing free migratory labor. The labor everybody wanted had to stay. Reagan gave them amnesty because big business wanted cheaper labor. Despite that, they became Democrats because Democrats treated them like people.

I'm for strong borders but it makes no sense to disrupt a peaceful community to chase down guys at Home Depot who want to work. That's stupid. And militarizing a community over it is un-American and unconstitutional.

Californians don't make distinctions between illegal and legal. They are all part of the fabric here, tolerated and accepted as construction workers, cooks, etc.

Yup, and that's because it has always been like this. The flow of immigrants from the southern border with Mexico and across the sea from Asia has never really stopped. Stephen Miller is imagining a past that never existed.

I know my own grandfather came from China in the 40s and was . . . not strictly legal when he came. He eventually became a citizen, of course. I think others should be afforded the same chance.

My strong feelings on this topic are born out of personal family history too.

My grandfather immigrated here legally from Portugal in the late 30s. He was uneducated and spoke heavily broken English until his death. If he could do it anyone could.

My functionally illiterate father lost his good paying Union construction job when the company broke the Union and replaced them with Mexicans. (Not politically correct to say it that way today but it's the truth). It is not unreasonable to presume some/many/most of those were illegals.

When I was in high school in So Cal you could go to known spots and compete with illegals for under the table day work.

So yes, it has existed for a long time. But that doesn't make it right. Also, the scale is different today. And Ds are now giving illegals benefits that the rest of us pay for (see CA Medicaid). It is wrong.

doesn't matter if they are biased or not, they win legal victories for their clients and are much closer to the situation than you or me. From their 2024 Impact Report:

"This past year, we provided legal services to more than 11,000 individuals and families. We helped more than 2,400 people secure legal relief and employment authorization, defending their rights under the law and allowing them to live in safety with their families in the United States. We achieved multiple victories in the federal courts and in Washington, D.C., including securing remedies for separated families and advocating for the return of unjustly deported individuals."

The Reagan Republicans wanted cheaper labor so they opened the door for immigration and gave them amnesty and your Dad lost his job.

Then the idea came, "can we get the cheap labor without browning up America?" That's how NAFTA was born - with most of the yes votes coming from Republicans (75% of Republicans in the House voted yes).

But the job pull is too strong as rich, white Americans want great landscaping and cabinetry. And their kids won't do that stuff anymore because college and/or drugs are too much fun.

This is all just a history - none of it is a reason to put the US military on the streets no matter what you think of this history.

"The National Guard was deployed in Berkeley during the People's Park protests in May 1969 for two weeks, from May 16th to May 30th. Governor Ronald Reagan declared a state of emergency in Berkeley and sent in 2,700 National Guard troops. The troops were tasked with maintaining order and breaking up demonstrations."

- we didn't have 2 to 5 million a year coming illegally, that's insanity
- we had (and have) legal guest worker programs for agriculture
- we didn't have an Autopen Democrat administration rerouting FEMA monies to fly in illegals, and church groups to profit from resetting them
- we didn't have 80,000 - 100,000 people a year dying from cheap, powerful drugs, easily attainable bc of a collaboration between CCP China and Mexican drug cartels
- millions of illegal immigrants undercut the labor rate for African and Caucasian Americans, which means many decided not to marry
- example: illegal immigrants displaced and undercut union jobs in the meat packing plants in Iowa
- our Black neighbor, a roofer raising a family w four girls, lost one union job when a Mexican crew had their white foreman offer to roof the housing tract in Orange County for half the price
- we didn't have ERs flooded w illegal workers using the ER as their doctors office, nor did we have rampant hospital closings
- a friend worked at Head Start in the far East Bay, she said their students were 100% Latino, largely illegal
- we didn't have illegal workers displacing Black families in South Central LA, Oakland, The City and Richmond
- we didn't have over 50% of births in LA County in public hospitals to undocumented immigrants
- we didn't have countless social programs to tap into, many that cumulatively cost billions of dollars per year
- I heard two senior women on fixed incomes, one Latina, one White, say "I feel like I'm being pushed out from my city"

We assimilated many different immigrant groups in manageable numbers - Mexican Americans, Filipinos, Vietnamese, etc. - not tens of Millions, including hundreds of gangs, including child and human smuggling. Large barrios or even cities mean these immigrants aren't learning English, and explains our cratering proficiency scores.

My very first day on campus I heard this faint rhythmic thumping. It gradually got louder and louder. Then a very large group of riot police rapid marched in unison past me. They were on their way to the President's office, which had been occupied by apartheid protesters. I can only imagine how wide eyed I was. Quite an introduction to Berkeley for a shy introvert from behind the Orange Curtain in So Cal.

The California governor said late Monday night that U.S. Marines are "not political pawns" in a post to social media blasting Trump's decision to send the military members to California.

Newsom said Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was "illegally" deploying the Marines and argued it was a stunt so Trump could have a "talking point" at a planned parade in Washington on Saturday to celebrate the 250th birthday of the Army, also the day of Trump's 79th birthday.

"The Courts and Congress must act. Checks and balances are crumbling," Newsom added.
