Mitch McConnell played a decisive role in preventing Donald Trump from being convicted by the Senate after Trump was impeached by the House for inciting the January 6 Capitol attack.

While the House of Representatives successfully impeached Trump on January 13, 2021, McConnell used his institutional power as Senate Leader to delay the trial and ultimately led the vote to acquit him. McConnell prevented the conviction through two primary avenues:

1. Delaying the Senate Trial immediately after the House impeached Trump

McConnell rejected calls for an emergency Senate session to hold a quick trial while Trump was still in office. He argued that a fair trial could not be finished before Joe Biden's inauguration on January 20.

By delaying the proceedings until after Trump left office, McConnell created a constitutional loophole that he and other Republicans later used to justify acquittal.

2. Voting to Acquit and Influencing the GOPDuring the February 2021 Senate trial

McConnell signaled to his caucus that he would vote to acquit. The final Senate vote was 57-43 in favor of convictionfalling 10 votes short of the 67-vote (two-thirds) supermajority required.

The Constitutional Argument: McConnell argued that because Trump was now a private citizen, the Senate lacked the constitutional jurisdiction to convict a former president.

The Bipartisan Shield:
This argument gave fellow Senate Republicans the political cover they needed to vote "not guilty" without explicitly defending Trump's actions.

McConnell played his role perfectly. If these things came down to one or two votes where he was the deciding factor and he supported Trump, there may be things to talk about.

The rest of us know that Mitch is so focused on his party war, not unlike Newt, that he was horrible in his service to the nation. Hypocritical as to scotus appointments Garland and Barrett, and then did not impeach Trump for staging a failed but violent COUP D'ETAT attempt.
