"President Trump is reaching deeper into individual markets to try to bring down consumer prices.

Why it matters: The administration is under mounting pressure to deliver relief as affordability becomes a bigger political liability ahead of the midterms, Axios' Courtenay Brown writes.
The moves:

Beef: Trump said yesterday that he will temporarily waive tariffs on up to 300,000 metric tons of additional beef imports for 90 days, a period that would last through the midterms.
Axios

Agricultural and industry groups have raised concerns that President Trump's plan to rapidly import 300,000 metric tons of tariff-free ground beef over 90 days could strain supply chain oversight. Critics warn that compressing massive volume shifts into a short timeline increases the risk of compromised food safety screening, quality control gaps, and difficulty distinguishing foreign from domestic meat.

but I thought the tarrifs would bring down prices and stimulate industry and farming here? No? I guess votes matter after this fail? What other tariffs are next on the chopping block? Canada?

Farmers are actually grateful for this move. Herd numbers have been dropping for years. Cattle production has a long biological lag. This isnt an issue of party like you all are making it out to be.

The U.S.slaughtered millions of breeding cows. And the herd became historically small. During the Biden years, drought and extraordinarily high production costs led ranchers to slaughter large numbers of breeding cows, contributing to today's cattle shortage and high beef prices.

The irony is that because of this with beef exported as a cash crop, the average Argentinian can no longer afford a good steak and a malbec, a centuries old privilege of the poor in that country that they no longer enjoy under Millei and Trump...

which Farmers exactly?

Who Has Criticized the Deal?
The National Cattlemen's Beef Association said that Trump's move would not address his stated intention of helping to increase the size of the U.S. beef herd.

The move would "throw cold water on the prospect of herd expansion and sacrifices long-term stability for short term messaging," NCBA CEO Colin Woodall said in a statement.
PMI Foods President Darin Parker called the decision "merely a short-term solution to ease costs for consumers."
"Underlying supply issues can't be solved with this kind of Band-Aid approach," he added. "A more durable, structural solution is to incentivize American ranchers to rebuild and expand the domestic herd."

Yup.
Anyone claiming that the American Farmer is grateful for this move by Trump is spreading misinformation.

The National Cattleman's Beef Association (NCBA) has represented America's cattle producers since 1898 and is the largest association of cattle producers in the U.S.

"NCBA's family farmers and ranchers have numerous concerns with importing more Argentinian beef to lower prices for consumers. This plan only creates chaos at a critical time of the year for American cattle producers, while doing nothing to lower grocery store prices," said NCBA CEO Colin Woodall in a statement released Monday.

"Additionally, Argentina has a deeply unbalanced trade relationship with the U.S. In the past five years, Argentina has sold more than $801 million of beef into the U.S. market. By comparison, the U.S. has sold just over $7 million worth of American beef to Argentina. Argentina also has a history of foot-and-mouth disease, which if brought to the U.S., could decimate our domestic livestock production."

Beef From Argentina? 'A Betrayal of the American Rancher,' Farmers Tell Trump

USCA was among the first to respond to Trump's remarks.

President Justin Tupper issued a second statement Monday and said, "USCA commented on Friday regarding potential steps by the administration to address beef prices, and we will reiterate our position today: government intervention is not needed in an industry that is already correcting in response to years of market pressure.

"Today's comments alone triggered an immediate reaction in the markets cattle futures dropped significantly. It's important to underscore: the current price of beef on grocery store shelves reflects the true, inflation-adjusted cost of raising cattle in America today.

"Already this year, the U.S. has imported more than 1.26 million metric tons of beef, primarily from Australia, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, and New Zealand. Increasing imports under current rules ultimately benefits foreign suppliers and multinational packers, while putting U.S. ranchers on the losing end and depriving American consumers of honest transparency at the meat counter.

"USCA supports affordable food prices for American families. But we do oppose policies or loopholes that manipulate the market to address a solution that will be solved through natural market behavior. This approach weakens our industry's foundation and undermines rural America.

Can you please explain how Argentine beef can bring hand and foot disease to the United States? That makes no sense and appears to be nonsensical fear mongering.

Perhaps you should direct your question to the NCBA.
But I guess the National Cattleman's Beef Association would have the following concerns:

I realize ambassadorships often go this way, but my god what horrible qualifications she has, at the outset:

WASHINGTON (AP) President Donald Trump on Monday nominated the wife of "God Bless the USA" singer Lee Greenwood to serve as the U.S. ambassador to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.
Kimberly Greenwood was among a list of nominees the Trump administration sent to the U.S. Senate for confirmation.
Later Monday, Kimberly Greenwood posted on Instagram a picture with her husband and Trump as she thanked the president for the nomination.

When you say "long-term" gains, how long will it take to see the "gains" from Trump's tariffs?

Most were implemented in April of 2025.

Currently $88.6 Billion as of July
