I was riveted to my TV for hours yesterday. How JJ Spaun bogeyed 5 of his first 6 holes and somehow kept grinding away and won the tournament despite his start is hard to fathom. He made some brilliant shots on the last three holes while the rain and soggy conditions made everyone else play like I do (20+ handicap). It was very entertaining.

A buddy texted me after Round 3 and proposed a bet: We each picked 2 players. Whoever got the 1st pick would then get the 4th pick. I let my buddy take the 1st pick and 4th and I got pick 2 and 3.

His 1st pick was Sam Burns and his 4th Adam Scott. I took JJ Spaun and Viktor Hovland.

The bet: If you picked the winner $5. If one of your picks finished higher than both of the other guy's, another $5 (Yes, we're high rolling pensioners).

I didn't want Sam Burns because I feared he isn't a closer based on watching him choke 4 sudden death playoff holes in the Canadian Open last week against Ryan Fox. I didn't want Adam Scott because he is 44 and only a handful of guys (Lefty, Jack, Hale Irwin, Ray Floyd) have won Majors at that age (shot nerves get you).

I picked Spaun and Hovland because they were at the top of the leader board and I didn't think Ortiz would beat them…but a couple of other guys made a run.

Jack Nicklaus was in the booth for a bit Saturday. One of his reflections for success at Oakmont was that when you have a bad hole you have to "take your medicine" and get back to work and not press. I think that was Spaun's key to success. He had the same placid look on his face whether he was making bogey or birdie. He bogied 5 of the first 6 holes but stayed calm. Then he reset during the 90 minute rain delay and came back with a fury.

After the break, Sam Burns, on the other hand, choked makable putts on consecutive holes, then he visibly blew a fuse when he didn't get relief from a wet lie.

Adam Scott's old man nerves kicked in and he derailed.

I won $5 for Spaun winning and another $5 because Viktor Hovland finished higher than both Burns and Scott.

What I've seen is it becomes a problem when they are effectively negotiating against themselves, and right now they are, as a majority of the board are endorsed by them. One board member even holds a position with CTA while also holding a board seat. Seems like a clear conflict of interest to me.

In the private sector it's different; the union and management have an adversarial relationship and that can lead to a fair compromise. In the public sector you're spending the public's money and it gets dicey.
