In general I don't think reparations are a good or cost-effective way of achieving progressive goals. You're better off just creating benefits for poor people regardless of color.

Is that type of improper behavior supposed to be a proxy for slavery reparations? I think this distinction matters because it impacts who would get compensated and for what.

We aren't responsible for redlining any more than we are responsible for slavery.

They are bad moments of our countries history but trying to fix it by dolling out money isn't the answer.

I like your answer in part because it is similar to mine...my paternal g/father didn't immigrate hear until the 1930s, my maternal g/mother was born and raised on the Cherokee reservation, and they both in a way that pretty much means slave ownership didn't happen. (And I would add for myself...even if one of them did own a slave, I feel zero guilt, duty or obligation for what some person I never knew did 200 year ago. That isn't my responsibility).

It may be helpful context to the general discussion to note that in 1860 only 1-2% of Americans owned a slave.

Kind of cool crossover, mine was a great great great grandma who was Cherokee on my dads side. I don't believe they lived on the rez though, I think they lived in Salina, OK.

It wasn't great-great-great grandma Warren, was it?

My post didn't have anything to do with responsibility.

I was simply explaining the basis for this specific piece of legislation, which several posters here confused with SLAVERY because they didn't bother to do anything but jump to conclusions.

When my family moved into our home in Oakland in 1960, the previous owner left behind a large stash of correspondence and large index cards of information about homeowners in a roughly one mile radius bordering Piedmont. He'd been the President of the neighborhood Homeowners Association which had fizzled out in the late 1950s. From the correspondence, it was clear that the primary goal of the HOA was to keep undesirable races out of the neighborhood. Not exactly redlining, but another similar form of discrimination. Most of what few childhood pictures I still have, have some of that correspondence on the backside.

So Democrats in the City were also racist and instituted plans to punish POC. Got it.

The same Democrats "redeveloped" the Fillmore, squashing a reportedly lively and thriving area. A KQED special revealed exactly one former Fillmore resident returned to the 'redeveloped' area.

That said, thirty years ago I met a top custodian (Black) at SFCC who owned nine homes in The City. He had a large friend who used to call into KGO, I think his name was Stan. Great guy, poor physical health.

Oh yeah?
And what are you?

By the way, have you ever seen that show Finding Your Roots?
It's pretty cool.

Have you ever looked into your ancestors' lives? Do you know if your great great grandparents were slave owners? Have you reconciled to how the advantages they enjoyed trickled down to you, and how the disadvantages their enslaved people trickled down to their descendants today?

I'm not saying I agree with this SF reparations bit - I don't - but one has to be an incredibly daft crotch to make the preceding post!

Considering half my family didn't arrive until right before WWII kicked off as Germans who lived in Russia, I'm guessing they didn't have slaves. The other half were Germans/English and later native american that arrived in the 1800s I still have the tin type family photo, they were poor living in Oklahoma working the oil fields. I know where my family came from and can speak confidently enough we had nothing to do with slavery, like most americans. Only 1.6% of Americans owned a slave when it was legal.

Ummmmm..... I have no idea why you are talking about slavery and slave ownership.
It has nothing to do with the reparations legislation signed into law by the Mayor of San Francisco.

Do you not understand what "redlining" is?

I would suggest you actually read the legislation authored by Supervisor Shamann Walton:

AARAC_Reparations_Final_Report_July_7_2023.pdf

2025_12_16***STATEMENT: SAN FRANCISCO ESTABLISHES THE REPARATIONS FUND***

A good pivot from an angle I introduced.
Slavery and red-lining part of the same historical strategy to keep one class of people down for another group (the one in power) to keep itself there.

So you are supporting this military action on a sovereign nation that posed no imminent threat to America and without authorization by Congress?

Not saying I support it or not but Trump didn't need congressional approval just like Obama didn't need approval when striking Syria, or getting Osama, or in Libya, or Clinton in Kosovo, or Sudan. Article II powers.

I certainly don't love it and the power vacuum it probably creates now but I am very happy for the people of Venezuela who have suffered for far too long. My partner is Venezuelan and they are over the moon excited.

And as expected, here comes the "whataboutism"

There are at most, 23,000 American citizens in Venezuela. Funny how this is even a talking point.

Never mind WHO is running the country now.
Does anyone know?

Of course not.

Citing historical references isn't whataboutism dude, come on now. We've been getting along lately so please don't twist my words into something I didn't say.

Not sure what the number of Americans in Venezuela has to do with it and I clearly stated I don't love the power vacuum it creates.

No worries, Tom - my kids are taking up the slack for getting Bs and Cs. My high school aged son has actually started a part-time tradeschool program and is looking at the community college route. School is not his thing and I hope he doesn't skip out on community college.

This was my other kid. The Airforce has been FABULOUS for him. There are so many benefits - hard and soft - that I would encourage you/him to take a look.

Today is an example of why I would never encourage my son to join the U.S. military. I didn't raise him to risk his life as a poorly paid mercenary of corporate America.

I think the entire topic becomes a reflection of our existing beliefs. To the extent I had any control of what my adult kid decided I felt a lot more comfortable with him joining under Trump than Biden.

The reality is my kid is in a particular role that (pray / knock on wood) should be fairly safe. But being a military family...I definitely have a new consideration for the families of people who are actually in harms way.

I saw today that Russia condemned the United States' invasion of Venezuela to depose its leader, which is at least at the height of irony.

It says that we have a foreign policy based on spheres of influence and might makes right. Taiwan is done, maybe later than sooner.
