I've been laid off twice in tech in the last five years. It had little to do with H1-Bs and a lot to do with stock price and vulture capitalists threatening the leadership with a hostile takeover unless they made cuts.

There were similar things in my case, but it didn't have anything to do with H1Bs. It was more that I lived in the Bay Area and had a Bay Area salary and the company clearly decided to let go of me (several other SF-based folks were laid off in our department at the same time) and keep the people in cheaper areas. Not H1B people, more like people in Indiana or Canada or Ireland or the Philippines.

It all just comes down to cost-cutting that has been going on since corporations discovered the practice. H1Bs are but a small piece of that puzzle. If that option didn't exist they would find other ways.

Because I know him, worked with him, he excelled, and actually earned performance and yearly bonuses. It was reasonable at that time, with his skill level, hours, and performance bonuses, to reach near 100K. This was in the early 00s.
