Except that the Post's subscriber base is mostly of a left-leaning bent and this will drive them away further. I have a lot of doubt that any conservatives are signing up for Washington Post subscriptions now.

The trend has been against free markets and not just from the pro-tariff Trump side, due to the emergence of the Chinese domination of the global auto and other markets.

If the tariffs on China were kept similar to those of Japanese, german or Korean automakers, China would capture over a third of the US auto market by the end of the decade.

Zeihan is wrong on most issues about China and on many other issues, either because he doesn't get it, or he doesn't want to. I seriously doubt that in a society like China they can miss their population count by a factor of 25%. Even in early 19th century Europe, statistical methods already were developed to assess populations with good precision.

The majority of top CPC leaders have a STEM backgrounds, including the last three leaders, Xi is a chemical engineer, his predecessor Hu Jintao was a civil engineer and Jiang Zemin was an electrical engineer. These guys are capable of solving differential equations and have an inherent understanding of population dynamics.

China's long-term demographic goal is a "soft landing" from 1.4 billion to around 800M - 1B at the end of the century. They've started relaxing the brakes on their population growth restrictions by raising the maximum number of children to 3 per family.

There is also the possibility it was something other than a mistake. They are Communists, effectively a dictatorship, and they do what they want to get what they want.

They're not exactly communists, China's public sector share of their GDP is actually lower than the US', and much lower than those of EU countries. Every communist country in history has failed or stagnated economically, and that is not the case in China. They have a kind of a hybrid system with a market economy and elements of socialism with a homegrown ideology based on Confucianism.

Zelensky was heavily promoted by oligarch/gangster Igor Kolomoisky, who owned TV networks and financed several far-right militias. He created a Mr Smith goes o Washington-like TV show starring Zelensky in the role of a teacher who becomes a politician, runs a party called "Servant of the people" and becomes president of Ukraine. The show was heavily promoted.

Zelensky transitioned from this TV role to real life, starting a real-life party by the same name as the TV party, and put together a presidential campaign funded by Kolomoisky, running on a peace and reconcilliation with the Donbas/Russia platform, then made a 180 degree turn after he won.

The people who managed his TV show have actually been the main group running the presidency. That's why the war has been run by Ukraine as a PR campaign, with often disastrous consequences on the military front.
