Same here, my firs two cars were VWs. 1985 5-speed Cabriolet bought new made in West Germany as an undergrad, then a 4-speed Fox station wagon made in Brazil through grad school in the 90s, perfect for loading the windsurfer, the mountain bikes, or ccasional "camping" in on road trips. Bought it for $500 from a friend who was going back to Europe, 150k miles and never a problem, other than the original coat of clear sealant paint having completely worn off.
