left to right, tyrone "the captain" wallace, kameron "putback" rooks, jordan "en fuego" mathews, roger "the chaser" moute a bidias & sam "grand theft larceny" singer...ivan "oaktown" rabb not pictured as he was doing interviews & patiently signing autographs near the cal bench after the game for the young ones

gameday started on an ominous note as the bears rode in a luxury coach bus 1000 yards from the hilton garden inn to the ugly azz concrete dome of doom...yeah i walked in laramie's 29% temps with the sun on my back to the arena with my jimmy john's ham & cheese sandwich (extra lettuce & tomatoes, no chips, cookies or soft drink)

and then josh adams (who constantly talks/whines the whole game) starts knocking down shots from all over the court to get the yellow clad wyoming crowd amped up...sitting in the 1st row behind the cal bench both marcus green & myself yelled at the refs the entire game re: adams illegally pushing off with his non dribbling hand/forearm to create separation

the bears employed multiple guys trying to slow down adams & the most effective chaser was roger "lion king" roger moute a bidias who utilized his length & quickness...roger is in a very good place right now playing within his skill set in defending at a very high level, crashing the boards for potential rebounds & knocking down the occasional wide open 3 point shot

jordan mathews endured a cold shooting afternoon but crucified his soul in overtime to lead the bears to victory with ice in his veins moneyballs with ivan & jaylen already fouled out in regulation

t-wall once again kept the team together during the cowboys runs & scored 23 points on 10-22 fgs, 6 assists & 6 boards

jaylen brown is frustrated right now, his body language is a little bit off, but i expect him to continue to mature & play thru this rough stretch as an incoming freshman...a little meditation with a focus upon visualizing positive outcome is all brown really needs

i saw & heard the postgame handshake line conversation between coach martin & coach shyatt (who like his star player adams also is an insufferable bitchy queen) and i'm not gonna tell you what shyatt said but there's absolutely no reason for the cal basketball program to ever return to laramie anytime in the next decade or two

them california golden bears competed & stayed together as a team in crunch time...now if they could only make a simple entry lob pass to young ivee but that's for another day...the magnficient 2nd half lob from t-wall to ivan which resulted in a 3 point play should be model gameplan play for this season

back to civilization#

Was what Shyatt said that bad that you can't even say anything specific about it? FWIW: It absolutely did not look anything like that in the body language of either of them. Of course, Cuonzo, being among the wisest men on the planet, could very well have just not taken the bait, and let Shyatt morally hang himself.

"it was a big win for our program to be able to find a way to win a game on the road going into overtime in a hostile, tough environment with the altitude and everything going against you against a team that grinds you out and plays a physical brand...they pressure you and force you into off balance shots...you have to be patient and be aggressive...you have to make plays...road games are very tough...to play at the level the way larry shyatt coaches this team, we knew it would be tough, but we found a way to get a win especially with key guys fouling out"

"those guys (the bench) played well...jabari had 6 points and made two 3s...roger did a tremendous job in defending...adams is a big time player, we knew that...we knew he is a high level player that takes good shots and makes big plays...sam did a great job coming off the bench and making 3s, attacking the rim and making plays...that's what it's about when you're a team...you have your experienced guys that are battled tested that find ways to win the game"

"you learn every game...you have a talented team but you still have new parts learning how to gel together...it takes time and the best way to learn is in games...it's hard to learn and get a good gauge in practice...when you get in live game situations, you learn to make decisions...we learned and we grew up a little bit today"

let's be real here, everybody knows that taylor (who can't wait to see her "squad" again) can make a better entry lob pass than any of them california golden bears

in watching every second of cal basketball live this season from only a couple of feet away from the action there have been 100+ potential scoring opportunities when young ivee & lately kam too have successfully sealed their fronting defender yet the bears have been too tentative to make the entry lob passes for the strong high percentage finishes when they release...the bears passers are indecisively freezing/hesitating for a split second & then the flashing opportunity is gone

not only is this costing the bears much needed mismatch points (and foul trouble for the opposing bigs) around the bucket but it's also resulting in poor spacing & low percentage contested 3 point shots as teams realize the bears aren't gonna make the necessary passes to feed the bigs...this is a recipe for a mediocre season in berkeley

this is the BIGGEST issue facing the cal basketball program right now...if they do not start working/practicing harder to execute this basic basketball fundamental, the entry lob pass, they are not gonna make the ncca tournament again this season as the losses pile up...it's really that simple, this team will not be consistently successful without a much more effective inside game & it all starts with passing fundamentals

this opportunity is available on almost every offensive sequence, yet the bears continue to fail to make this happen

the highlight of the wyoming game was in the 2nd half when t-wall attacked the paint & then made the magnificent lob entry pass to young ivee for the basket, foul & 3 point play...i almost cried out of joy when they happened, this play is the roadmap to cal becoming an elite basketball team that takes advantage of ivan rabb's amazing ability/skill set to finish, the low number of shots he's getting each game is unacceptable

taylor's gonna be with her crazy azz dad at the coppin state game on saturday december 19th & we're gonna take the floor during the pregame warmups to properly demonstrate to you clowns the entry lob pass if you guys don't get your heads out of your azzs by then to figure this out, ok?

taylor & i love all of them california golden bears but love isn't gonna get them any wins, entry lob passes to ivan rabb is the ticket to a deep run in the tournament

Shocks, thanks for your posts that actually pertain to Cal basketball, namely those pointing out that Cal's inability to get the ball to Rabb is stunningly bad/unacceptable. And despite the one Ty pass you rightly adore, Wallace is as guilty as anyone.

Against Wyoming, Ivan had only five shots, making all of them and also was perfect, 3 for 3, at the line.

Out Bears have to get him the ball. Our season rests on that.

the pass Shocky is referring to was a pick and roll which I've advocated all season

it was successful, but it was not the traditional pick and roll because Wallace was already very deep when he passed the ball to Rabb. That meant the defender was already going that direction and was actually in position to prevent the pass or block the shot. It was Ivan's great catch and finish that made the play

Hopefully Wallace (and Singer) will learn how to run a pick and roll properly, although it's really a play against man-to-man. Usually too much traffic in the middle to run it against a zone

Still it was successful and it was a step forward

However, Wallace had a better entry pass to Ivan in the game (it's also shown in the video). Ivan sealed his man, and Wallace delivered the perfect pass to him at the right time for an easy score.

the traditional entry pass hoop hoop dreams is talking about between t-wall & young ivee can be viewed at the 4:53 mark, you can see me behind the bench jumping around on my pogo stick when that **** went down

there is literally no 4 in the united states of american that can guard ivan rabb down low

and there is literally no 3 in the los estados unidos that can guard jaylen brown down low...right now, jaylen is very frustrated with himself (his body language is slumpish), he needs some easy buckets near the basket to build up his confidence & get himself going again...the current plan to have him shoot contested 20 footers to get himself out of the slump is truly a dumb azz plan

southbender, all of my posts relate to cal basketball, it's just that you fail to grasp the subtleties of the connections

but 100% agreed that this season rests on the bears getting ivan rabb the ball, that's not happening right now

i would hope coach martin & his staff would reach out to jay john (the technical braintrust behind lute olsen's final 4 teams), mike montgomery (he knows cal's personnel better than anyone) & steve kerr (golden state ball movement/facilitation genius) for input & suggestions...there's no shame in reaching out to others, it's actually a healthy way to live your life to not stubbornly think you got all the answers & to embrace change

if this staff does not embrace change, the most talented team in the history of cal basketball will lose half of their pac 12 games & will be playing in the nit tournament in nyc...and yeah, i'll be there because i love all of them california golden bears (including the coaches) but it doesn't have to go down that way, it really doesn't

good luck to former cal commit oscar frayer as he evaluates other collegiate opportunities, high character young man that assisted in the recruitment of rabb to berkeley

I attended the prep2prep tip-off classic and while Raymond Hawkins looks like he has some potential as a freshman, the real star of the day was Jordan Brown of Woodcreek High in Roseville....even though he was double and triple teamed whenever he sniffed the ball, he still scored over 30 with relative ease....unlike Ivan, Jordan has little to no help from his Woodcreek teammates....I watched Ivan at least a dozen times through his HS career but I can't tell you who the better high school player is between Brown and Rabb....Rabb is such an all round player with an extremely high BB IQ, but Brown is probably the better offensive player....he shoots the ball out to 18 feet effortlessly and consistently even though triple teamed...it is really hard to comprehend that he is only a sophomore (15 yrs old)....he is still thin but that doesn't stop him from battling underneath...I really couldn't see a weakness in his game that just maturing isn't going to take care of....Cal needs this kid!!! This kid needs Cal!!!

Shocky, I think they made a more concerted effort to get the ball to Ivan on the block on Saturday, but still were not too successful. Part of the problem is that, when the defender has bulk, Ivan is not quite strong enough yet to set up and maintain a position where he's available for the pass, or can do anything with the ball once he gets it. Where they've been most successful in getting the ball to him has been when they reverse the ball from one side of the court to the other on the perimeter, then get the ball to him as he flashes across the lane, before the defender can get set behind him. They need to do more of that. If the ball movement improves, he'll get more opportunities down low. However, I also think he's equally effective from the elbow, so I would probably put him there at least as often.

jeff, coach shyatt started & played 36 minutes 6'9" 210 lbs sophomore alan herndon at the 4 opposite ivan rabb while much thicker 6'10" 245 jonathan barnes battled at the 5 opposite kameron rooks

young ivee had a height, weight & quickness advantage vs herndon, the bears did not take advantage of this mismatch during rabb's limited minutes due to foul trouble

from my viewpoint in the dome of doom petting zoo free movement area a yard behind the cal bench i had a player's view of passing lanes as our guys particularly sam singer, jabari bird, jordan mathews & jaylen brown repeatedly could've delivered an entry pass to ivan but failed to do so as they indecisively hesitated too long when rabb flashed open & then the opportunity was gone

there's a lotta factors that favor immediate improvement to this critical issue:

1) our coaches are very smart & experienced, they got both jarnell stokes & jordan mcrae into the league in the 2014 nba draft after the vols sweet sixteen season...coach jones is a respected bigs coach with big dance final four experience...coach hufnagel got an ivy league degree...these guys are not dumb azzs

2) our players are not selfish, their not delivering the ball with rabb in optimal spots on the court isn't because they don't want to share the ball...their hearts are in the right place, indecisiveness not desire is the issue here

3) rabb is being coached up to post up stronger & present a larger target...earlier in the season he was kinda floating around the foul line avoiding contact...ivan also appears to be ready to attack the basket more physically & aggressively rather than just quickly passing, this is due to his increased d1 experience

why is feeding rabb so important?

1) young ivee is shooting an unreal .667 on field goals & .800 on free throws, he is ******* money when he gets the ball

2) spacing will improve as ivan is also an adept passer, he played point forward for lou richie's bishop o'dowd dragons at times last season facilitating paris austin & teammates

3) rabb's efficiency around the basketball will mitigate scoring runs by other teams...cal lost to richmond & san diego state in large part because the spiders & aztecs got hot & the bears couldn't break their runs...ivan working around the basketball is a much higher percent solution to stopping runs against the bears as opposed to jacking up contested 3 pointers

but let's be real here, other than t-walls 2 magnificent passes to young ivee vs wyoming, the bears are not doing a better job of feeding rabb

incarnate word will be the next opportunity for this team to take a dramatic step forward

let's do this

Well, you were there and I was only watching on TV. I think we agree it's not an issue of desire, they were definitely looking for him on Saturday, to an extent much greater than earlier in the season. It's more an issue of technique. If the defender is playing behind, Ivan has to get low and wide, so he can receive the ball without the defender getting around to contest the pass. The wings then have to use fakes so that they can deliver the ball either with a floating pass or an angled bounce pass. If the defender fronts, then you have to go over the top.
