Here's an idea: Instead of mocking players who enter the portal who will likely end up in worse situations, how about acknowledging that they're not stupid and overinflating their market value but instead are likely being nudged out the door and being told their likelihood of playing here is small? Why are you adding insult to injury for players who worked their asses off for our alma mater and gave it their best shot?
If that's not the case with a player and he foolishly enters the portal on his own after overinflating his value and ending up at a crappy program with a bad degree, have at it, but I suspect that's a pretty small percentage oft he guys who went into the portal.
As far as how a coaching staff handles this situation, there are some semi-subtle differences between what is "right" and what is "wrong"...
Following the season, coaches have "the conversation" with players about their future with the program. And let's be honest, there are some scholarships that the staff wishes they had back, in hopes of getting better players. But it's all in how it's handled: I think it's fine to tell a player that, in his current trajectory, he is unlikely to see the field (or the court) very much and, if that's what's important to them, they might want to consider transferring to a different program...
Also fair to tell them that, if they stay -- even if they never play -- they are obligated to work hard at practice and in the weight room and display a positive team attitude just like everyone on the roster and, if they do not, they are not fulfilling their part of the scholarship agreement.
Maybe fair; maybe not: Taking the player off of the roster, while still honoring their "full ride", as Wyking Jones did with those two players a few years back.
At this point, the player can decide what to do. In the case of Chris Street, he decided to find a spot elsewhere. Even if he comes back to Cal as a non-player, I think he got a pretty good deal: preferred admission to Cal and his first 2 1/2 years paid for, not to mention the experience of playing college football in the Pac 12 (and he did play some).
What would be unethical would be to try and coerce a player into leaving, or, if he chooses to stay, to make his experience on the team unpleasant. The staff should treat all of their players like they would expect and want their own sons and daughters treated, in a similar situation... and this is how I suspect Justin Wilcox and his staff play it.
