the path to self actualization starts with self awareness (tho reality is kinda overrated):
after master teacher anton's 4:15 pm modern yoga class shocky is now repacking his golf bag for a quick 48 hour trip to los angeles to listen to a biz opportunity (gonna take the meeting at the erewhon near the studios in the valley, not gonna pass on a FREE meal at my 2nd favorite breakfast spot in the city of angles) but more importantly to visit with his longtime friend/biz mentor johnny (splits time between desert highlands in north scottsdale & one of the luxury condo towers on wilshire in beverly hills, jj just got into brentwood & he's invited me to be his 1st golf guest) & thinking about the importance of MENTORS
shocky gotta lotta mentors for different aspects of his life ranging from yoga, golf course architecture, being a great parent (slim wadie), etc...they sometimes tell me uncomfortable truths about myself that are beyond my field of vision at that moment
so back in the day schulzie tole johnny while we wuz walking down a fairway with our bags over our shoulders that as a 3.92 gpa haas biz ad grad with a phi beta kappa gold key that i wuz gonna apply & go get a harvard mba en route to becoming a minted wall street ceo
johnny looked at the monster with disbelief & tole him that wuz a really stupid ******* plan that had zero chance of evah becoming successful, jj broke it down as follows:
"first of all, you don't have a singular business focus like successful ceos, you're interested in a lot of things unrelated to business and that would be your downfall...plus have you ever noticed that at social events while all the guys are talking business and pro sports while networking that you're the only male that's hanging out with all the wives and girlfriends talking about fashion, home renovation ideas and animal rescue fundraising??"
"secondly, you don't have a social filter, you say whatever the **** you want to say regardless of the consequences...successful ceos say the right things to the right people at the right time, that's not you"
"thirdly, the best ceos are fantastic role models, they are walking around the office on friday afternoons before 5:00 pm checking on people and building relationships...you got zero interest in doing that, everybody is going to be talking about how you left at noon thursday to go play golf in ibiza"
this really hurt my feelings at the time but deep down shocky knew johnny wuz rite & therefore never applied to the harvard mba program...my daughter taylor tells me all the time that her living in the west village is allowing me to vicariously live thru her experiences in nyc
whatever
luv u sweetie!!
cultivate, treasure & listen to ur mentors (and u will be off to the ******* races)!!#
