joego, let me be very clear re: this, unless a miracle donor shows up at chancellor lyon's office, there is ZERO chance that another outsider such as jimmy rodgers (whose roster got predominantly 2.8 gpa guys, do u think that would work in berkeley??) or anyone else is gonna get hired as the next head coach

keep in mind it's not just hiring a head coach, it's also recruiting/paying the right assistant coaches & staff including the s&c program personnel which is another $10,000,000+ that berkeley don't got

hopefully justin can lead the bears to a 6-3 record this saturday afternoon, if he's asked to step down at some point (with the full pay out of his $14,000,000 contract just like knowlton) it's gonna mean berkeley grad ron rivera is handed the keys (with rolo as an longshot option due to his irrational covid stance, harsin has surrounded himself with unproductive offensive coaches other than famika plus his banging his assistant at auburn is not in his favor) with ideally dilly 2.0 haas biz ad grad mike saffell as the future head coach in waiting

point of clarification: if in the hopefully unnecessary scenario that ron rivera becomes the head coach then the most qualified person to serve as the football general manager at that time would be the already on the payroll mike pawlawski (lives close to caldecott tunnel high school) with valuable assistance from kevin kennedy (who works for FREE which is remarkable for a highly successful attorney)

There is a lot of buzz about 2026 being the year invitations start going out for realignment. With play starting in 2027. If Cal has to buyout their ACC contract to move that is a very high number and much higher than whatever a new staff would cost. If any conference has any interest. Or a super league is formed. The CFP format is still being negotiated. It could grow to anywhere from 16 to 28 teams getting invited. I think the period of time after the CFP will be crucial. There could be a lot of activity. The rash of HC firings across the country point to the importance of football success. There is a pot of gold awaiting those programs that get invites to whatever the new realignment looks like.

The cost to exit the ACC today is $165M. in 2026 it will be $147M. If Cal cannot afford to terminate Wilcox how in the world will they pay the exit fees? The ACC could fully implode and dissolve but even then no guarantee Cal gets an invite. I doubt every ACC program is on the short list of the SEC and B1G.

A new conference format (super league or similar) could save Cals bacon. But that seems a major longshot as it would take away some power (possibly a lot of power) from the 2 current top conferences. There is a push for more regional scheduling and maybe (big maybe) Cal gets enough support from the 4 western schools in the B1G to add Cal and Stanford. They would still need to pay their ACC exit agreement. Unless the ACC folds.

We will see soon enough regarding Wilcox. My fear is if they keep him all tixs may need to be free. Not just those for students.

honestly shocky would consider promoting mike saffell to head coach with ron rivera helping him make surgical adjustments to the current staff (which gotta lotta remarkable amazing talent)...the problem in berkeley is more about needing a dynamic +1 extroverted leader that can fire up the squad & make adjustments on the fly (not the bull**** "we need to look at film first") on gamedays, not the football talent level in memorial stadium imo

a lotta people questioned the sanity level of visionary asu chancellor crow when he hired dilly as the sun devils head coach but they aren't doing that anymore

strykur (admire ur fiery passion, would put u on special teams coverage units!!), did u also graduate from the haas biz school (after being forced to sit outta school for a quarter because dr harry edwards got my a+ final exam grade late to admissions director ruth nice, instead delivered the new york times all over campus for a sae entrepreneur & took a couple of classes at sonoma state including the dreaded computer class which wuz taken pass/not pass to protect the gpa) with a 3.92 gpa & a gold phi beta kappa key and an ability to analyze & dissect voluminous financial statements & documents??

max homa (67, tied for 9th): KABBBBOOOOOOOOMMMM, wut an EPIC finish for homa's 2025 pga season with a drained downhill 25 foot eagle 3 on the par 5 18th hole for the 2nd straight day to thunderous applause!!

xihuan chang (71, tied for 7th): xihuan is a boss man birdieing 3 of the final 5 hole in shooting a fantastic 279 for the tourney on a tough desert track, chang's best golf on the game's largest stages is all in front of him!!

zinqin zhou (71, tied for 14th): z's game is offensively explosive with an eagle & 14 birdies this week but just gotta clean up the mental/strategic mistakes in order to get to the winner's circle

2025 preserve collegiate invitational in carmel: lineup update

yeah the bears along with the stanford cardinals play the most practice rounds on world top 100 golf courses than any other college on planet earth!!

fun fact: the 1st time shocky wuz invited out to monterey peninsula country club ^ he wore shorts which is against the club's rules, wut a dumb azz (slim wadie threw me the avis keys & tole me good luck getting pants at goodwill that fit right, the monster wore his rain pants instead)

fun fact deux: the front gate at the preserve to the clubhouse might be the longest stretch of road anywhere in golf, it's around a 15 minute drive with all the amazing wildlife!!...the preserve is an above average uber upscale housing development course, if bill coore had been hired instead of formulaic (no quirky architectural features) tom fazio to design the preserve it could've been a world top 100 course the scenery is that magnificent with its remote location (gotta fantastic wedding venue among the redwoods on the back nine)

2025 preserve college tournament in carmel: day 2 update

wowza, wut a ****show, the bears finished dead LAST (7 strokes behind 10th place powerhouse cal poly) in a candy azz soft field (important note: z & xihuan dnp because of traveling back from dubai & future euro ryder cupper callixte is still in paris finishing lycee)


CONGRATS to true freshman from legoland high school playing as an individual trevor cox (has legit earned his scholly, not so sure about the 2 2026 commits from cali) shooting 2 under par for 54 holes & a tie for 25th (only senior daniel heo also broke par for the tournament at 1 under par)!!

monster class course strategy tutorial:

during the tournament the bears had 3 double bogeys & 1 triple bogey with only 3 birdies on the par 5 3rd hole at the preserve which architecturally got shot values very similar to the par 5 8th hole at the los angeles country club north course

both double dogleg holes got landing zones that slope severely left to right with tree trouble & unplayable dangers to the right so the smart play is a draw off the tee (using a 3 wood if necessary) to hold the reverse camber sloped fairway...then the 2nd shot should be either a mid iron played safely back leaving a short wedge or aggressively played with a drawing wood attacking the green...u gotta take wut the holes gives u, not wut u wanna do, got it??

my daughter taylor just called her dad on her brisk walk from the west village to her midtown office & our conversation went something like this:

taylor: hey dad, i had fun with you and slim wadie on our boston college roadtrip, when are we gonna go to a cal basketball game again??

dad: i don't know sweetie, it's complicated

taylor: look dad you always tell us it's not healthy to hold grudges, wouldn't it be fun to sit with ivan or brendan in our old floor seats again?...how long are you gonna be butt hurt, it's been almost 10 years now, right??

monster bullets re: virginia

1) cavs rb2 xavier brown (4.7 ypc) is done for the year with an acl, rb1 j'mari taylor got 581 yards on 129 carries

2) this will be virginia's 1st game out west in the acc, the staff has consulted nfl resources re: the 5 hour flight & will be traveling to the left coast on thursday

3) shocky & coach's wife roberta martin held hands for good luck (it didn't work) in the 1st row behind the cal bench when my guy kingsley okoroh bricked 2 free throws (one wuz an airball & the other almost hit the 24 second clock at the top of the board) when the cavs made a last minute 3 point dagger to the heart from downtown charlottesville to complete a triumphant comeback as the #5 ranked tony bennet squad defeated cal's monster class...the next morning the fog rolled in & it took shocky a ******* 12 hours to get back to the desert

4) shocky's 3rd favorite golf venue in virginia (only behind the fantastic kinloch in richmond with double fairways on half the holes & the homestead cascades course in the mountains) is the FUN coore & crenshaw designed 10 hole short course at farmington country club near campus

5) the 1st team to probably depart the acc is not gonna be clemson, florida state or north carolina (all of which voted no to extend acc invitations to cal, smu & stanford)...it will be virginia & the largest impediment to this happening is a state legislature that wants virginia & virginia tech to remain tied at the hip in terms of conference affiliations
