madsen tole knowlton during the interview process that he got 3 scholly guys he thinks he can bring to berkeley that are not utah valley guys, as a stanford grad mark understands the high gpa requirements of elite academic institutions...my take is that a true facilitating/distributing point guard is the program's absolute #1 recruiting priority so at least one of these 3 guys needs to be a true 1

as for the 3 guys madsen thinks he can bring in, another guard & a post like 7' aziz bandaogo (10.2 rebounds per game this season) would make the most sense (the bears are overstocked at the wing) but fully expect rodney brown to play 25+ minutes per game as a true freshman if he can physically defend (his body construction is very lean) with a high motor (he glides too much in his videos) at the pac 12 level

and so that's 13 schollys for the 2023/2024 calfironia golden bears

I understand wanting to keep the 2 signees. But if Madsen is going to be the HC he needs to decide if they fit what he wants. I do not see any current player that is must keep. I am not saying he needs to purge the roster but this roster won 3 games. So clearly it needs some overhauling.

My preferences for staying.

Askew (already transferred twice)
Celestine
Newell
Okafor

I would be ok if they stay but not heartbroken if they leave

Nobody that is in the portal needs to be re recruited. They are willing to leave. Goodbye.

The roster needs to be rebuilt.

The need for multiple guards is clear. A true post player preferably one that can block a shot occasionally and catch simple entry passes and hang onto rebounds. Madsen needs to find players that will play how he wants to play. Not try and coach guys that don't fit.

I assume that John Montgomery will be on the staff. Seems like a prerequisite for the new coach.

6956, agree with the majority of your commentary (there's zero chance monty bowser is gonna leave berkeley without a degree) but make no mistake about it the bears were one of the worst shooting 3 point teams in the united states of america which wuz due to more than half the roster having uncorrected broken down crooked azz shooting mechanics

rodney brown is arguably the top high school perimeter shooter on the west coast (reminds me of alan crabbe in a similar stage of his development), coach madsen's 1st phone call after formally accepting the job is gonna be to rodney

Shocky1, as You know there is no way thy the sapling JK would allow HC JP and major donor Goldman have more say/power in the athletic department by then eventually going over the head of JK and going straight to Christ to express their eventual displeasure. I'm sure more donors would of came out..If JK has lost the faith of Christ was not going to allow for a big time hire. He hired Madsen who will follow the chain of command and doubt would be obstinate or oppositional. JK does not like confrontation and was not going to hear former players, like Buckley, Lamond Murray, JKidd and many others who have been so displeased.

Hopefully, Madsen can meet with donors soon and make a difference.

real talk: love all that mike montgomery has done for cal basketball in winning a pac 12 championship & on a personal note also allowing the emergence of cal's monster class in its formative days by not instructing his staff they couldn't build relationships with the shockster

but if monty & his longtime friend jay john (also a tireless supporter of the cal basketball program until the dumb azz con artist relegated him to olympic sports or some other non revenue sport wasted career path) kabashed joe pasternack as the next head coach even tho he had the donor relationships to quickly fundraise the necessary nil dollars for championship basketball in berkeley, then mike should be writing the 1st next $1,000,000+ nil check in appreciation of mark madsen bringing his son john home from the islands

one of my favorite cal guys (smile every time i see him at football games & floor seats back in the day) has been brainwashed by the con artist (who apparently confides in him unlike anybody else) which has resulted in him parroting all of the knowlton false narratives (a glimpse into the con artist's mind is a kinda scary thing)

so late in the basketball season my brah tells me that "doug goldman wants mark fox to get another season" which upon fact checking is 100% not true...knowlton will literally say anything to move forward his agenda which does not include spending a dollar more than absolutely necessary on football & basketball

and now doug is not 100% on board with madsen & cal is singing the panic at the disco song re: nil fundraising when the reality is that millions were gonna be available if joe pasternack had been hired

honestly thought greg richardson's recent article re: the flawed interview process wuz his best one in recent times, less "nuanced" and more real

tell the con artist to **** off & let's hire andrew mcgraw asap#

isa is not a dumb azz, he got a 4.2 gpa at jesuit high

former cal assistant coach under ben braun, new orleans head coach & arizona associate head coach to the donut boy of tucson joe pasternack is very interested in being interviewed by mike williams & ashwin puri

pasternack is supported by some of cal's largest donors including doug goldman which means he's probably the best candidate to fundraise the necessary funds to get the dedicated basketball practice facility done in berkeley...and make no mistake about it, shovels need to be in the ground on this facility during the next 12 months

he's a workaholic who will put in 15+ hour days, a relentless recruiter with deep west coast ties...the jorge kicking incident was a mistake, that should not define his candidacy for returning to cal

if joe is hired, his staff would ideally include his former players dennis gates & richard midgley as assistant coaches

I watched the thread where Madsen was introduced as the next BB coach at UVU. Honestly, it was incredibly impressive. He projects sincerity, strength, intelligence, and integrity, and in my mind would be a great representative of the university. Of course, the missing piece that I can't comment on is his coaching ability. Clearly, he's a major improvement over Fox. As Shocky points out, he also needs to rope in the whales to help with NIL. I don't know Doug Goldman, but I'd hope he'll give Madsen a shot because quite honestly, he can win at Cal with the right support. Let's hope the whales get over their disappointment and support Madsen and also help get us a great replacement for JK. Anybody stepping into the AD job at Cal knows how challenging it can be. OTOH, if we get good coaches of the 2nd and 3rd most important slots - MBB and WBB, I think we can have a very successful program.

aziz is truly an impact post player with +1 athleticism & potential nba upside

bandaogo scored 14 points on an efficient 5-9 field goals (love the alley oop lobs over the top), got a fluid free throw shooting stroke 3-4 free throws, knocked down a manute bol 3 pointer from the 7th green at shadow creek, absolutely dominated the glass with 16 rebounds & perhaps most important committed only 1 turnover

defensively he alters shots in the paint but needs to work hard in a s&c program to get his body right for the next level...his listed height of 7' appears to be legit but does not look like he's currently carrying the listed 230 lbs...with more muscle aziz will float less on the perimeter offensively & impose his will more around the bucket and defensively not lose position in the paint against heftier post players

yeah make no mistake about it aziz bandaogo is truly unforgettable, #55 gonna ride with me boss

transcript from a late breakfast (egg salad sandwich on sourdough, 32 oz green drink & apple slices) this morning at jj's deli in north scottsdale:

mr sun angel: really can't believe your ****, did you ask my wife last nite at whole foods why don't "i love them scared and frightened animal rescue doggys that live on the streets without a safety zone?"

shocky (munching on his food): i dunno, maybe

mr sun angel (handing over a 6 digit check in support of animal advocacy facilities in maricopa county): yeah, well thanks, so when i get home last night my wife is screaming at me and our daughter is crying because ima horrible person that doesn't care about "doggys"...do you have any sense of social cues or do you always just say whatever the **** you wanna say without any filtering of what might be appropriate or not?

shocky (putting the check in his pocket): sorry, ima gonna eat your pineapple if your not gonna eat it

mr sun angel (getting up to go & getting walked to his car): you really are a smelly berkeley hippie, you know that, don't you?...and thanks for paying for my "free" breakfast

mr silverleaf sun angel tole me that ben coleman gotta significant "lower body injury" and hasn't practiced even once yet for the sun devils & is doubtful for the upcoming 2023 season this fall with a best case scenario of a late in the schedule emergence

this is yet another indication that football (particularly the trench warfare) is a violent sport but also that s&c coach brian johnson's program for cal's monster offensive line is not working & the byproduct of that failure is an inordinate number of injuries among the playing rotation offensive linemen

major injures in the last year:
ben coleman (starting guard)
matthew cindric (starting center)
spencer lovell (starting guard)
bastian swinney (interior lineman rotation)

significant injuries in the last year causing missed games:
brian driscoll (starting guard/center)
sioape vatikani (starting guard)
brayden rohme (starting tackle)
trent ramsey (interior lineman rotation)
jackson brown (tackle rotation)

hopefully coach johnson is gonna wake up & quit ignoring my emails offering to help, our linemen moving like granite statues on valium with a lack of bend, flexibility & quick twitch reflexes which are critical to avoiding debilitating injuries gotta stop...the monster stands ready to assist coach johnson with a zoom call with my yoga buddy jaylen brown re: the importance of a yoga/meditation practice incorporated into cal football's s&c program

6'4" 201 lbs fullback point guard trey woodbury from clark high school in las vegas (originally signed/played a year for them unlv running rebels) balled out yesterday in utah valley's nit semifinals game in front of his family/friends with a jason kidd stat line: 16 points, 12 rebounds & 6 assists...no those are not typos

trey could appeal the ncca for a 6th year because he only played in 2 games at the end of the season 2 years ago because of a knee injury which has been successful rehabbed as evidenced by his 16 points per game, 5.9 rebounds per game & facilitating/distributing 4.7 assists per game (which wuz 66th in the nation this season) along with knocking almost 40% of his 3 pointers (39.6%)


his alley oop lobs to aziz are a thing of magical beauty, artistry of the highest form on the hardwood

the bears have not had a physical point guard since t-wall roamed the floor with cal's monster class, playing soft is not in woodbury's dna & knocking guys on their azzs is no problemo for a 1 that knocked down a lethal ice in his veins 85.7% of his free throws this season often with the ball in his hands late in the game with **** on the line during money time

major cal basketball recruiting announcement:

sharpshooter rodney brown (the next alan crabbe in berkeley) indicated today that he's 100% committed to coach madsen & them california golden bears...quote: "I am very happy with the new hire"

brown will be an immediate impact scorer for the previously scoring challenged program but he's gotta work his azz off to build up his body to defend in physical pac 12 battles

congrats to coach madsen on his 1st recruiting victory
