We need to see Wychoff and Miller with the ones. Unfortunately it is obvious we need some changes. I can't stand to watch the same 5 for another year.

golfcoursegardenerbear, 100% ^ that the bears gotta get better on the o-line during the upcoming season, last year's **** cannot be repeated once again for a 7th year in a row during the wilcox era of coaching mismanagement of the offense...hiring a burned out grandpa friend greatwoood who had zero interest in calling recruits on his flip phone & then hiring the technically incompetent angus who wuz commuting to reno half the time has flattened the trajectory of the cal football program

the reality is that coach bloesch coupled with mike saffell are now turning things around which will be obvious to all the true california golden bears fans that make the roadtrip with zonybear & shocky to steamy azz denton on september 2nd

last season's cal's monster offensive line starting 5 don't exist no more...cindo is finally healthy, sioape is in shape/won't take plays off any more, tj has made the adjustment from montana state, brian's attitude has moved from la jolla to national city (shocky's curvy brunette yoga female gf at cal wuz from nc, chica muy caliente y loca tambien es bueno) & brayden got more weight (hopefully his crazy fast metabolism will allow him to retain that weight during the long season)

and now the bears really got impact 7 starters with texas a&m stud matthew wykoff who is further along right now than stanford mechanical engineering grad barrett miller who retired from football last spring to repair damaged cartilage in his left knee but is fully healthy now in berkeley

yeah the world is changing but football games r still won by those that impose their will as non candy azz soft trench workers

I don't know much about what goes on in the amateur coaching ranks these days but a new acquaintance of mine coaches high school baseball. He tells me that not much coaching goes on in highschool because every kid has a private coach. He works at a very well to do school in SF. My son's old DLS JV coach had taken DLS varsity to numerous NCS and state titles. He was not a good coach but he was a climber/self promoting schmoozer. Like it or not, the world has changed and you better get out and sell your program...or not (and retire). We'll see if Wilcox has made the transition or needs to be replaced. You could obviously see Fox would not make the change.

82, ima supporter of justin wilcox as the head coach of the california golden bear football program...100%

yeah there's been mistakes made (starting dario longhetto over michael luckhurst wuz a major factor in the bears losing/getting out kicked on field goals in both boulder & south bend in 2022) during the last 6 years mostly involving his hiring of ineffectual offensive coaches but he's got the right team assembled now with spav & company for the 2023 season...and justin's successfully adapted/transitioned to the new realities of recruiting in the transfer portal

coach wilcox is under contract thru the 2027 season for an average of $4,750,000 annually, curious where u think any money would come from for the buyout ur suggesting in order for him to be "replaced?"

honestly don't see any comparison between fox & wilcox but that's just the monster's take...if u see darkness just look away

I hardly follow sports. Actually, these human dramas (eg. whether a good coach needs to be replaced with a marketer) are more interesting to me than the actual sport. I'm 64, I've seen enough sports and followed them closely enough for a couple of lifetimes.
And I must have struck a nerve with my BIL's success story. My only point was that your college choice is just a small piece of your overall life's success journey. There is more than one road to Dublin. If I'm selling a recruit on Cal of course I'd mention how great Cal is and can easily make that case against a school like WSU. But speaking as a old man who's raised kids of course I'm not going to criticize someone who went somewhere else and tell them they are doomed to be a loser.

cal's monster offensive line update: practice 5

insightful interview with texas a&m transfer matthew wykoff, he indicates he's getting more reps at guard this fall & that he can also swing out to tackle too if necessary...love hearing the props to spav, coach bloesch & coach saffell

coach bloesch intends to lean heavily on a starting 5 with a nfl depth model of probably 7-8 trench workers

u can tell wykoff is all biz & 100% focused on football, this is a young man who know what he wants to accomplish in life...and with a 3.75 hs gpa he's got the brains to accomplish all his dreams in building generational wealth both on the field & in berkeley's classrooms, matthew is not a dumb azz (just ask avery)

cal's monster offensive line fall camp practice #1 update:

1st day out depth chart (will change during fall camp):

left tackle: brayden rohme, everett johnson, barrett miller
left guard: brian driscoll, matthew wykoff, joshua stovall
center: matthew cindric, bastian swinney, dashaun harris
right guard: sioape vatikani, trent ramsey, dylan jemtegaard
right tackle: tj session, ender aguilar, martin tine

monster odds & ends: great news that bastian is healthy for fall camp & competing at center (at 6'6" that's a lotta flex to snap to a 5'11" qb)...legit 6'6" 310 lbs martin tine is in berkeley & not outta shape which historically is an issue for jc lineman making the transition, kudos to martin...barrett miller started primarily at guard for the cards, now competing at left tackle for the bears after recovering from a physical issue this summer...current starting 5 guys is the same 5 guys that started during spring ball (but without the salty as **** fries & tasty chocolate shakes)

cal's monster offensive line update: practice #5 depth chart

left guard: brian driscoll, matthew wykoff, everett johnson

what is the key to the california golden bears defense going from good to great in the 2023 season?

that would be the healthy return of all american defensive end BRETT JOHNSON who wuz considered the pac 12's best defensive lineman prior to getting ****** up

spoke to brett on the field during the epic wild azz stormin' the field celebration of my b-day after the stanford big game, tole him that the funniest moment of the 2022 season wuz him flexing (see foto below) in the background when desean jackson wuz back at memorial earlier in the season...he tole me that i wuz the 1st person to notice, that he appreciated my catching his flex & we both fist bumped pretty hard with some major laughs

https://instagr.am/p/CghyFhKPO91
brett johnson embodies all that is right about today's rapidly changing college football landscape from a berkeley perspective: he is smart, loyal, humble, genuinely/authentenically himself, relentlessly hard working with a no quit attitude & funny as ****

https://instagr.am/p/CKcXr4ml90K
in summary brett johnson is the kinda person u wish wuz ur best friend, u wanna be his wingman

89 & jt, 100% agreed that BRETT JOHNSON is an interplanetary descendent of zeus or something

he's the key to the bears defense moving from good to great in 2023, we already got one of the top defensive backfields in the nation (the return of the takers) & a potential all american in jackson sirmon at inside linebacker

a kinda weird aspect of this board is that there is literally ZERO conversations re: actual cal football players, check out the 40+ topics on the front page of this board, none of them are actually about football players playing football on a football field with a football

why is that?

the monster's take is that the majority of the posters on this board haven't been to memorial stadium during the last decade, their memories of cal football are all in the rearview mirror which is why they would rather talk (humorously with no inside knowledge) incessantly re: conference realignments

and why is that?

well, it's primarily because the once inclusive board concept of chris avery is gone...jim mcgill's fall camp reports are premium which means they are read by around 50+ senior citizens at the rosewood retirement home before lunch

the cal football and basketball programs desperately need to generate interest among a younger fanbase in order to move forward into the unknowable future, this board isn't doing **** to make this happen

yeah even BRETT JOHNSON has his limits

just kidding, BRETT JOHNSON got ZERO ******* limits

For the non-revenue sports the Big West is a good fit and better travel;
UC Davis
UC Santa Barbara
UC San Diego
UC Irvine
UC Riverside
Cal Poly
Cal State Bakersfield
Cal State Fullerton
CSUN
HAwaii

All travel to sunny places in California with one trip a year to Hawaii. Major budget savings. Big publics like Cal vs small privates.

But agreed, in any case we need a more local conference for the non-revenue sports. WCC has more Bay Area and PNW teams. Big West is more in SoCal.

Hmm, what if Cal, Stanford, UCLA, UW and Oregon all join the WCC?

I think the current vetting of SMU and their apparent willingness to forgo distributions for up to 5 years is a crucial point. That provides additional revenue to distribute and may be enough to secure the votes required to get Cal and Stanford in. That they are vetting them suggests to me that the votes may not be present now for just Cal and Stanford.

If this occurs this is a very good outcome considering the current situation. Not perfect but good.
