How is Utah a more valuable brand than Berkeley or Stanford? What do you think of where we stand relative to this list of 48?
These are football brands we are talking about. Not the University at large. Cal football has been down a long time. We get excited when the team gets to 6-6 and makes a very minor bowl. Most of the teams on these projected lists have been much more successful and draw significantly more fans both in person and on TV.

If Cal football (athletics) is to survive in this new world of college athletics they need to win NOW. They need fans in the stands and eyeballs watching on TV. They also need to show a willingness to be competitive and play along with the new way programs (Universities) conduct themselves.

Schools like Vanderbilt and Indiana will get brought along because they are currently members of the club. Cal is seeking membership. If they want in they will need to win and attract fans. High GPAs and Nobel Laureates matter in US News and World report rankings. But in a made for TV football world winning and eyeballs matter more. Need much more of both and right now. It may be too late already this train is moving fast.

They win and have a fan base that shows up. Surprising number of wealthy donors in a low cost of living area. Far less competition for entertainment $$ than a place like the Bay Area.
I would also note that this is an entire article written based on one guy's speculation. It doesn't mean anything.
The article itself means little. But when the P12 was dissolving before our eyes many folks completely disregarded the numerous articles and podcasts that ran counter to what Kliavkoff was saying publicly. I would caution folks to not take lightly the articles and podcasts that are once again coming forward regarding future realignment.

Some are just clickbait. But some are folks that have real contacts and are being told about what is happening beneath the surface.

This is college football in name only. College is not the driving factor here.Money is. Cal and Stanford have a reputation (well earned) for not supporting its football program. For poor attendance. For being a little difficult to deal with. And for not winning enough. Stanford is in a better spot because they have won in the recent past. But at present they are a clear bottom feeder and nobody goes to their games or watches them on TV.

FWIW Andy Staples is pretty well connected in college football circles. He knows the movers and shakers. He hears things. Realignment is not done. The timeline for it is what is at question. The NCAA is losing every lawsuit brought. There is a lawsuit between FSU and the ACC (Cals new home). The CFP was a 12 team playoff for about 5 minutes. Now it is headed to 14 and then 16.

Greg Sankey (SEC) and Tony Petitti (B1G) hold the cards and the power. They are pushing things along quickly. In fairness if football does not do something quickly the game is in some real peril.

Many folks just a few months back were making the same arguments regarding Cal and Stanford. They took a weak deal just to stay in the club for now. Cal was very close to being WSU or OSU. I would hope that Cal is taking this entire realignment thing seriously. I know the collective and the championship caliber folks are. The school? Probably not seriously enough.

It is coming though and Cal is not in a great position. This is not about college. It is about money. TV money. And Cal heard loud and clear from those folks that they do not bring any real value in that area. They have to change that. Soon. Real soon. Like right now.

So we are toast. We are locked into the same coach who barely reaches .500 a year. We are locked into the worst AD ever. As others noted prior, an NIL donor base that is fatigued, a vibrant bay area where there are too many other options to care about football, an admin who could care less, and a whole history of subpar performance that have left only a small passionate fanbase. $2M NIL for bball and football both, if 5% (Stan payout is closer to 3-4%).
Considerable extra $$$ would need to be there to buy out Madsen's contract, plus pay him well over current Cal salary, and also pay remainder of Haase contract.
I see no evidence that Furd even funded anything close to that number for NIL, and the story discussed in on basketball board says it was an NIL endowment, which is a patently stupid way to fund NIL. especially when you can't even recruit portal transfers who would command significant NIL payments due to academic restrictions on transfers. I see no merit in there assertion Madsen is leaven to Furd due to NIL support. If you told me someplace like USC, that is a different story.
There are rumors about Enfield looking at other jobs. Also rumors about Altman retiring from Oregon, and Washington letting Hopkins go. Any of those have more than enough available money to hire anyone they want.
Lots of coaches may be out after the last season of P12 hoops. Besides these 3 you mention it seems Haase, Hurley (ASU) and Tinkle (OSU) all could be gone. Tinkle though has a Justin Wilcox type buyout. If he leaves on his own it is $750K. If OSU fires him it balloons to around $8M. OSU no longer is a P4 program and cannot likely afford to fire Tinkle right now.

It is a major hill to climb. The next few months likely tell us a lot. The big thing on the horizon is the selection of the next Chancellor. This is a huge deal for athletics.

There are other things that will be telling. The Spring transfer window for football. Can Cal keep Madsen from Stanford. It is great that so many other sports are doing well. They matter a lot to some folks. But TV could care less. They are a source of pride for Cal. But are not even a talking point for conference realignment. So positioning the football program to win is the best thing that is under some control of the fans. That means NIL.

Cal realistically needs a bit more time to get things right with football. One good season is not enough, but it is the next thing they can do. The longer it takes for realignment to occur again the better it likely is for Cal. But yes the administration is a problem. As is Justin Wilcox.

But if folks want to stay as a P4 conference then things have to change. The stands need to be full or close to. The TV ratings need to rise. The won-loss record of football needs to take a big step forward. And that record needs to stay good. I have some optimism the record could improve. No more USC, UO, UW, UCLA and Utah every season. But those are the teams that help Cal's home attendance which also needs improving.

I am not sure the next realignment scales down to just 48, but you cannot assume it will encompass all the current P4 programs. But the reality is football has to break away from the NCAA. And likely will try and do so soon. Is Cal all in? Probably not. The major donor group just formed is. But Cal needs to change or they could (likely would) be left out. If they even want in. That is a question we do not know the answer to.

Everybody points to the GOR as being ironclad. Nothing is ironclad. I think money talks here. Look for others like Clemson, UNC and UVa to possibly get aggressive in fighting the ACC. Supposedly ESPN has some sort of renegotiation built in the current contract that could occur in 2027. The ACC added Cal, Stanford and SMU as much to keep the conference together for now and keep FSU and others from voting the conference out of existence. Notre Dame helped as did Stanford for getting Cal in. But NC State changing their vote allowed the Bears to live for now. If NC State was somebody that the SEC or B1G wanted Cal would be joining WSU and OSU in the G5.

econ, not surprisingly ur kinda missing the whole point of the monster's state of the union post

https://instagr.am/p/CnSBeOMNzqt
cal athletics got a onetime opportunity to get it right in selecting richard lyons as the next berkeley chancellor who would then logically fire general james arthur knowlton based upon his role in the mckeever scandal and/or financial incompetence thereby paving the way for andrew mgraw to become the next athletic director in the very near future charged with the responsibility of rightsizing the athletic department (in terms of worthless bureaucrats like the obstinate markeisha & the # of financially unsustainable sports they oversee) & prioritizing the revenue sports on day one...let's ******* go!

the bears football team got the most talent in the justin wilcox era with 2 high upside quarterbacks (neither one is one legged or got a bum shoulder) & an absolute gift in joining the 2024 acc conference...very excited to see who earns starting positions during 2024 spring ball which starts later this month on cal's monster offensive line which is the key to a ball control offense that keeps the d off the field and physically pounds for ground while the clock runs (fyi, coach bloesch is the most effective developer of talent on the staff)...ima gonna watch every second of 2024 football in person to see if the bears can fulfill their destiny & win big which is 100% necessary to sell more tixs at memorial stadium & reenergize the nil donor base for 2025 & beyond...but make no mistake about it, the 2024 season got the most exciting road games in the history of cal football...econ, do u got ur season tix(s) for memorial stadium to help create a loud home field advantage during this epic season that got major implications?

both the men's and women's basketball teams r a ****show but that's not really my concern anymore since the termination of cal's monster class...perhaps someone like greg richardson who is presumably more knowledgeable re: the moving forward plan can publicly share the vision here?

cal softball is a lotta FUN & cal golf is competing on a national ranked basis with my favorite hobby of watching max, colllin, ben & Michael at further afar (do u got ur passport?) pga tournaments & the majors

so econ if u wanna be depressed & eat 30 day old moldy toast with bumble**** jam that's on u but is that really how u wanna spend ur limited remaining time on planet earth?

Sure. But with conference realignment Cal has many less chances to play in bigger games. ESPN is media partner in the ACC. They also have the SEC. In the ACC right now you have 3 teams that attract TV eyeballs. FSU, Clemson and Miami. Cal can be 10-0 and playing Wake Forest and the game will be on the ACC network or ESPNU. Notre Dame is an ACC football partner and every 3 seasons you will play them.

The SEC has games every weekend that will draw eyeballs. They already have Bama, Georgia, LSU, TAMU that draw eyeballs. Florida has been down but is a brand. Ole Miss is on the rise. And now they add Texas and Oklahoma. And those games are in the same time zones as the ACC most weekends. I can hardly wait for the ACC network ratings for Cal vs Syracuse when they come to CMS this Fall. Or NC State. They have a chance for decent ratings when Miami comes. The Big Game will be a Bay Area only event most likley.

Cal will have to show they can draw west coast eyeballs to the ACC games. But winning is the way forward. if they do not start winning then welcome to the G5.

To be very clear, there is NO current reason to believe or suggest Mark Madsen is going to Stanford after this season.

They have a massive issue with the transfer portal (cannot take inbound transfers) and have an anemic NIL collective at this point. The rumors of an endowment are 18 months old and to my understanding have not been verified as real not does it make much sense on the surface of it. NIL is a dynamic area that a long term foundations time horizon doesn't match up against it. The cost to donors to tie up that amount of money for a below market amount of NIL funds just doesn't foot.

Will Mark Madsen be attractive to Stanford or other programs that have openings? He will be.

By far the best way to retain him is to donate to the Cal Legends Collective. Mark's not going to leave if he feels he has ample resources to build a championship roster.

Again - There are a lot of unverified rumors and speculation that are shared on our free boards, often without support. Be very skeptical and consider the source and the specific data that's being shared.

^ 100% agreed, be very skeptical when considering the sources of information re: the basketball program

ask urself:

1) did they really think they could replace cal's monster class with their own people?...and how did that strategy play out in terms of wins & losses, recruiting, attendance, local & national interest or any other metric?
2) did they ever support wyking jones & mark fox at any point?
3) are they publicly on record that FREE tixs for students is they key to growing the aging season tix/donor fanbase?
4) are they publicly on record that knowlton lied to madsen from day one re: the status of the basketball practice facility?
5) how much public information re: cal basketball recruiting is creating energy these days with prospects, their families & coaches?
6) are they publicly on record that knowlton is financially bankrupting the revenue sports particularly men's basketball with his covert tens of millions of dollars loans from the central campus that will never have the future revenues for repayment?
7) how will cal basketball ever raise nil dollars (the "ample resources" referenced above) & break ground on the basketball practice facility without jaylen brown being the face/nil lead financier (via his clothing brand 7uice) of the cal basketball program & if so what r the odds that's ever gonna happen without his yoga buddy shocky also being part of the nil fundraising/recruiting team?

Right. The comparison is with Utah that wins, uses NiL to its advantage, has incredible outreach to its fans, a great (and loud) stadium vibe (they sell out), etc. Utah gets on ESPN, often prime time.

The whole issue is about getting money to football now, because they have to get good now. Giving to the NIL Collective or Caliber puts the money in Wilocx's hands and circumvents the athletic department. That said, the new Chancellor needs to understand that without funding (I could be wrong, but I think the current AD is on board with greater monetary focus on football), you are not going to have many of non-revenue sports be able to compete at a level where they can effectively recruit. Like it or not, we have Wilcox and he needs to figure out how to win more. Hopefully he gets adequate funds and NIL to do so, End of sermon.

Forget the culture wars, and get to Tallahassee for what is one of the greatest football experiences. If you are a football fan, visiting Doak should be on your bucket list per my college football loving cousins (they are big Ohio State fans), who live about an hour away from Tallahassee.

Before you enter the stadium: Yes get there early for the tailgate scene. The band, which is huge, will go around visiting tailgates, and then finish the last hour or so in front of the stadium to serenade fans going in. If you go to the student union you will hear the War drum playing, which it does constantly 24/7 for the week before the game (that could get real tiring). The tailgate scene starts around 5 hours before the game and it gets jammed real fast. Given we are not Clemson or Florida, our fans should get a warm welcome of Southern hospitality, and get invited to tailgates. Be prepared to eat plenty of good food, drink, and party as hard as you want to. Do not under any circumstances wear Florida or Clemson colors (I got this from a friend who attended Florida). That said, I have also heard from a friend that went to Florida that he found tailgating you typically have to either be in a frat or know someone. It is more of a group/family- it's not really like a communal tailgate like in the SEC. But he went there as a Florida student. There are places you can go to pre-game like Madison Social (Madso), Township, Potbelly's (Pots), or Gordo's.

The Stadium: FSU actually has the use of the Seminoles namer and image as authorized by the Tribe and the Tribe are full participants in university activities, as will become apparent on game day. They have one of the greatest and iconic openings in college history (get to Doak Stadium well before kick-off), where a Seminole warrior riding a horse with a flaming spear charges out and throws the spear into the FSU logo as the horse leaps, and the sell out (and it will be sell out) crowd goes ape for about 10 minutes. The crowd will be the loudest Cal fans have seen since maybe the away game at Tennessee (FSU could be louder). The crowd will be doing the war chant and/or the Tomahawk Chop -right hands only- depending on game circumstances and on offense Cal better be ready for deafening noise. And then there is that famous drum beat behind the chant. The whole thing is so amazing that visiting teams have been known to join in for fun pre-game. Here is glimpse of pre-game.

The is a ton of traditions. One is FSU players line up shoulder to shoulder at midfield, raise their helmets, then walk from the middle of the field to the endzone while the Band plays the theme from "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

The band usually is about 450 strong (comparisons to weak arse Pac bands are depressing) and there is very little piped in anything. They are known as "the band that never lost a half time." In some ways I can see why FSU is looking to go the SEC, they are somewhat a throw-back. It really is a unique game experience.

Doak stadium is very cool and is the largest brick structure in the world outside the of the Great Wall of China.
Food and drink are plentiful and good in the stadium but if you did the tailgate scene, not sure it matters. You can buy booze at the stadium.

Warnings and a suggestion:

[ol]
  • Book the hotel asap, hotels in Tallahassee are notorious for gouging people
  • Driving/parking isn't bad supposely if you want to go to resort towns such Destin or Panama City. I think you have to buy a pass in advance, if you want to park right in front of stadium. GET THEIR EARLY!
  • It could be warm and humid, though the game is late enough that it could be decent weather.
  • Tallahassee can get very packed on the night before and game day. Plan to walk a lot if you are staying in town. Lines at bars can get long.
  • Go to the infamous Gordo's and order smash.
  • Travel director out. [/ol]

Hm… if can only pick one, what's better, away FSU game or Auburn?

I was looking into the FSU game, but the hotels looks expensive and very mediocre at best. Probably a pass for me

if you don't mind the drive, Destin is upscale. Good beaches, golf courses, higher end restaurant, etc. If you're looking for closer location, there is St. George Island, which is upscale residential (airbnb) or local hotels for a quiet, non-resort beach scene.

    cabo intercollegiate 3rd round update:

them california golden bears finished 13 over par & 10th out of 15 teams in the elite competition tournament at twin dolphins

major area of focus moving forward needs to be to solve the ongoing issue of abysmal play on par 3s, the bears 5 players wuz a combined +17 on the par 3s, no es bueno according to becky g

in college golf both walter & peter can stand on tee boxes and discuss clubbing & strategic lines of play with their players kinda like caddies, this needs to happen with better results on par 3s if the bears are to compete as a potential top 10 program

both the upcoming tournaments at pasatiempo (5 pars 3s particularly if the back tee box is utilized on the brutal narrow uphill 3rd hole) & the pac 12 championship at desert forest (the diabolical 12th hole requires extra clubbing as the green widens out in the back 3rd) got major scorecard wrecking par 3s

yeah becky g says no salsa dancing/yoga classes with muchachos that make dumb azz caca messes of par 3s, got it?

the university of california, berkeley=#1 ranked public university in the world (including mexico)
update from head coach walter chun:

"My assistant Peter and I definitely help players on par 3's giving yardages, clubs hit from their teammates, wind direction and we continue to implement long par 3's in our qualifying. The reality is that the last few events have had strong wind conditions, and it's not like the Bay Area has gusts of 15 mph or so of wind to help prepare. We also have to continue working on our shorts games. When they miss the greens, they need to make par the hard way."

gem, keep in mind the weather in the south might be a factor in your roadtrip decision

    https://instagr.am/p/BtwuEm7hzxq
cal plays auburn on saturday september 7th, trust me the deep south will be engulfed in faulkneresque suffocating humidity that will make u wonder why anyone would willingly live in that part of the world...shocky is gonna make a side trip with slim wadie on the friday before the game to walk 36 holes at the new coore & crenshaw (my favorite living architects) design on the coastline of lake martin alabama, the wicker point golf club...staying hydrated & not drawing the attention of the small town police departments is advisable

cal plays florida state on saturday september 21st which will hopefully be less toasty warm...current plan is to pregame golf earlier that week at the streamsong resort which is halfway between tampa & orlando (lunch with cuonzo & roberta martin would be fun too)...in that florida state is our new acc arch rival, this gameday in tallahassee is gonna be lit...**** the seminoles
