pitts, as someone who is kinda obsessed in an ocd way with gpas, shocky can tell u there's a strong correlation between sub 3.0 gpa berkeley academic silver bullets special admissions & early departures from berkeley without degrees such as sam jackson who due to his academic profile should've never been recruited by spav & marshall

but with that being said there are also some instances of academic silver bullets earning degrees from the #1 ranked public university in the world with all the academic resources that are currently available to student athletes...how academically motivated is the prospective student?

the monster's take is that all academic silver bullet admissions should be blueshirted their 1st academic year in berkeley to allow them the opportunity to building a strong academic foundation without the pressures of college football/basketball...thinking sam jackson could handle berkeley academics, learn the spav offense with no d1 playing experience & build up his lean frame to withstand violent hits wuz a dumb azz decision that wuz neither fair to the young man (from a complex troubled family background) or the cal football program

shocky is 100% rooting for the very likable & soft spoken (we spoke for 15 minutes in the bus staging area after the fun game in denton) sjv to earn a college diploma at auburn

GPAs: High school teacher here (recently retired). GPA is important, but, as Shocky alludes to, it's probably a good idea to dig a little deeper than just that number. Some schools -- some teachers -- grade harder than others... a guy like Russell White finds out after high school that he is dyslexic... a kid has a family or personal situation for one semester and that craters his GPA... could go on and on. Colleges, when they can, need to take a closer look at a candidate's whole profile.

big c (appreciate u, passionate educators r heroes), the berkeley academic silver bullet admissions process involves an interview by the prospective student athlete with admissions staff & also the athletic student center tutors/academic advisors to determine the academic background & motivation level...agreed it's not a simple process that solely relies upon gpas but with that being said there's a very strong correlation between the gpas listed in this thread & earning degrees from the #1 ranked public university in the world

my yoga buddy jaylen brown with a 2.86 wheeler high school gpa successfully went thru this process & that's why his official visit to berkeley wuz a locked down secret with only those that needed to know such as the recruiting director for cal's monster class aware of jb's clandestine bay area trip

dumb azzs will tell u we need to lower academic standards to get guys in, that's a really bad ******* strategy...flunking out isn't the solution to anything

the truth is grad transfer portals entering cal's entrepreneurship certificate program are not as critically evaluated in terms of gpas as high school students or those seeking admission into berkeley's world class highly competitive elite grad programs

anyways leidy's gpa at nobu malibu high school (transfer student from la escuela de havana) wuz 3.29...cap

2025 6'4" 255 lbs defensive lineman ikechukwu okafor from alief hastings high school is gonna officially trip to the west coast & berkeley on june 20th

yeah the university of calveston is very attractive to high gpa true student athletes that wanna get out of the nasty azz summertime/freezing azz cold wintertime houston weather & earn a degree at the #1 ranked public university in the world with wonderfully diverse, cosmopolitan year round cali weather

and that's why the california golden bears 2024 high school class got more signees from the great state of texas (9) than california (5) and also why buc-ee's is the official sponsor of the cal football program & shocky's FREE pregame tail party in the parking lot on the morning of the smu game in dallas on saturday november 30th

important shocky strategic decision making tutorial for the cal golf team:

byeong hun an has hit significantly different drives on the sharp dogleg par 4 10th hole at bay hill, his clubbing decisions on the tee box are predicated by the pin placement on the green some 400 yards away (actually 360 yards in a straight line if played over the trees/homes/out of bounds stakes on the right side of the hole)

1st round: 321 yard drive to the left intermediate rough which opened up an optimal unobstructed angle to the front right pin placement...BIRDIE

2nd round: 296 yard drive to the left rough which opened up a favorable angle to a deep left pin placement...BIRDIE

3rd round: 354 yard drive to the left greenside bunker which opened up a simple chunk & run sand shot to a deep right pin placement...BIRDIE

4th round: 256 yards to the left fairway which opened up a gap wedge to the absolutely diabolical front left pin placement, any ball played out of the rough & not from the fairway will likely lead to a bogey...PAR

yeah ben played this hole 3 under par for the tournament with driving distances ranging almost 100 yards depending upon the pin placement, that's a clear example of cognitive & innovative reasoning by students of the #1 ranked public university in the world

there's gonna be significantly less revenues for the athletic department in the forseeable future & that's why knowlton's decision in fiscal year 2022 to borrow $11,000,000 wuz financial malpractice...apologists will argue that borrowing money from the central campus is a standard operating mechanism, these are not ordinary times & the "good ol' days" of collegiate athletics (for schools not already in the sec or big 10) are firmly in the rearview mirror

the financial reality for the cal athletic department is significantly less revenues in the future primarily from declining media rights revenues & donations to the athletic department due to the growth of nil fundraising & the aging (and fatigued) berkeley donor community which is not gaining any traction (building a pipeline) with younger future megadonors...the fake berkeley fundraising numbers are not dollars that are actually collected, ok?

so whether it be the con artist & his evil as **** confidante jennifer simon-o'neil continuing their bureaucratic wayward lack of vision or new leadership such as andrew mcgraw as the next athletic director, cal will no longer be able to field 30+ teams (many of them underperforming for years) & will need to cut teams/reduce expenses

the next athletic director will need to quickly work within title ix constraints in revamping the currently bloated athletic department with the following teams in a new much more streamlined operation that competes for championships:

1. football
2. men's basketball
3. men's swimming & diving

Field Hockey has an endowed Head coaching position. In addition, they have a couple of supporters who support them operationally. Are the golf head coaching positions endowed? Other sports?
I believe in cutting sports, let me repeat that so before you rip me a new one and accuse me of many nasty things: I think Cal has too many sports. But I also want cuts that take into account how well the team is supported, not just a "here is what I like, let's cut them."
Gymnastics is getting an obvious bump in visibility, so does that equal more dollars coming in the short run? And fine, because you are going turn this to JK anyway, I'm not in any way shape or form suggesting that Knowlton is the one who is going to figure this puzzle out in a way that makes any sense.
Shocky1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
mb, sounds like we're actually on the same page, in an utopia world no sports would be cut but that's not the financial reality in berkeley with the escalating tens of millions of dollars of secretive knowlton debt (instead of cost cutting & balancing the budget with his enron level cfo tom lowry) with no possibility of future revenues being available for repayment in an era of collegiate sports when schools may be required to pay its players directly with no ncca oversight at a time when linear tv got cord cutting which is existentially downsizing espn & fox sports

the men's golf head coaching position is endowed by alec & marie shipman just like the football head coaching position is endowed by the travers family...the women's head coaching position is not endowed but does have an active donor support group (mostly female country club berkeley alums)

as you point out women's gymnastics is winning championships & the roster size is relatively small (only 15 "counters" which is the critical metric for title ix compliance), my original post re: teams to be retained has been edited to include women's gymnastics

a key component in moving forward financially is gaining financial concessions (debt forgiveness) from the central campus via the cutting of baseball & men's and women's track & field programs in exchange for the repurposing of the valuable evans diamond & edwards stadium land for other critical university usages

berkeley don't need 30+ sports to remain the #1 ranked public university in the world, 16 sports that are supported by students & alums that generate school spirit (and mega donors returning to campus in the fall for football gamedays with FREE tixs for students which is critical for building a pipeline of future fans) & that are competing for national championships is honestly the only legit path forward to avoid the impending financial tsunami

Men's golf is supported, including an endowment for the coach's salary. Women's golf is not. I believe field hockey is the only women's sport where the coach's salary is endowed. Based on having outside support, one would guess that the aquatic sports, rugby, field hockey and men's golf would start the list of survivors. The other men's sports are up for grabs, and the women's sports would depend on matching the number of roster spots in order to comply with Title IX numerically.

100% jeff, the # of roster spots ("counters") is a key metric in rightsizing the # of teams...title ix compliance is measured by "counters" not schollys

shocky's bottom line:

there's gonna be significantly less revenues for the athletic department in the forseeable future & that's why knowlton's decision in fiscal year 2022 to borrow $11,000,000 wuz financial malpractice...apologists will argue that borrowing money from the central campus is a standard operating mechanism, these are not ordinary times & the "good ol' days" of collegiate athletics (for schools not already in the sec or big 10) are firmly in the rearview mirror

the financial reality for the cal athletic department is significantly less revenues in the future primarily from declining media rights revenues & donations to the athletic department due to the growth of nil fundraising & the aging (and fatigued) berkeley donor community which is not gaining any traction (building a pipeline) with younger future megadonors...the fake berkeley fundraising numbers are not dollars that are actually collected, ok?

so whether it be the con artist & his evil as **** confidante jennifer simon-o'neil continuing their bureaucratic wayward lack of vision or new leadership such as andrew mcgraw as the next athletic director, cal will no longer be able to field 30+ teams (many of them underperforming for years) & will need to cut teams/reduce expenses

the next athletic director will need to quickly work within title ix constraints in revamping the currently bloated athletic department with the following teams in a new much more streamlined operation that competes for championships:

1. football
2. men's basketball
3. men's swimming & diving
4. men's water polo
5. men's golf
6. men's tennis
7. women's basketball
8. softball
9. women's soccer
10. women's swimming & diving
11. women's water polo
12. women's volleyball
13. women's golf
14. women's tennis
15. women's rowing

baseball & both track and field programs would be terminated with current schollys honored thru graduation...men's rugby, men's soccer, men's rowing, men's and women's gymnastics & women's lacrosse and field hockey would become club sports, fully expect jack clark to go nuclear on this necessary decision in his predictable myopic rage to defend his turf...women's rowing would be retained due to the overinflated roster numbers (which includes admission preferences for young ladies from uber wealthy families) that help meet title ix requirements

not biz as usual in berkeley (or the pac 12)#
hoops, luv u man but with being said both baseball & women's gymnastics need to be cut due to the impending financial tsunami that's gonna be hitting the cal athletic department due to knowlton's reckless spending on worthless bureaucrats & borrowing tens of millions of dollars from the central campus which will never have future revenues for repayment

delaney heller (delneyheller at berkeley.edu) continues to delay/obfuscate my public information request of 7 weeks ago re: transparent details of the athletic department's loans from the central campus

You are right about Field hockey being the only one, and I completely spaced on that.

Google Maps and GA/Alabama locals are notoriously unreliable with that kind of info

Google Maps is unreliable showing the mileage distance?

I think you're confusing getting mileage from Google Maps with waiting on Joe Starkey for down & distance.
