We have SDSU and UNLV on future schedules, which is good, and we need to make regular, but also we need to lock in a long series with Hawaii. And make Tyson Alualu our DL coach.

2024 california golden bear spring ball: practice #9

quarterbacks & wide receivers:
there's an open qb1 battle brewing at memorial stadium, chandler rogers is now getting his first full drive reps of the spring...whoever wins the qb1 starting position (which undoubtably will carry over to fall camp) will be throwing to a starting wr1 line up of trond grizzell, tobias merriweather & mikey matthews...none of the wideout 2s have consistently flashed yet

defensive backs:
marcus harris is an impact game changer at cornerback, he got legit nfl SPEED/upside & made another interception today...paired with taker nohl williams the bears got one of the better cornerback duos in the acc...fellow transfer speedster isaiah crosby is sharing some 1st team reps with miles williams at the safety spot opposite craig woodson...ja'ir smith is gonna get a lotta play this season at potentially multiple positions...matthew littlejohn is running with the 1s at nickel back while lu magia hearns is missing spring ball...the defense back room has seen an infusion of much needed +1 athleticism & closing SPEED which wuzn't the case during the 2023 season

cal's monster offensive line:
the last couple of seasons the 2s have been an absolute ****show of poorly developed guys with usually bodies not properly s&c equipped to play in the trenches at a high level, for the 1st time in the coach wilcox era the bears got 2s that got upside...the starting 5 of tj, nick, sioape, bastian & matthew is pretty solid with rush reimers also getting some snaps with the 1s at left guard as the 6th man who got the +1 athleticism to potentially play his way past wykoff or swinney into the starting line up...running with the 2s: martin tine at right tackle, trent ramsey at right guard, dylan jemtegaard at center & ender aguilar at left tackle

2024 masters cal's monster class media day festivities:

max homa: playing the 1st 2 rounds with his childhood hero tiger woods is gonna be insane with the largest crowds, max gotta stay focused during the circus

colin morikawa: putting will be the key, the elite ball striker needs to place his approaches in sections on the greens that leave uphill putts...colin's stroke has been tentative lately with the putter not releasing thru impact resulting in missed putts to the right of the cup

byeong hun an: as one of the top 5 longest hitters in the tournament, ben gotta attack all 4 reachable (for him) par 5s & efficiently score birdies (and maybe even an eagle or two) while taking advantage of his exceptional power game skillset

and so with that being said the biggest unanswered question for them california golden bears is how the **** has shocky been invited to play 15 rounds (the "typical invitation" includes 2 nites at one of the cabins by the 10th tee & 3 rounds plus an hour on the fun par 3 course) at augusta national?

crazy but true dept: new berkeley chancellor richard lyons (he also wanted andrew mcgraw's private cell #) just sent shocky a text asking him to be the keynote speaker at this year cal's mens & women's golf FREE team banquet at the buc-ee's outside of denton (good news is that schulzie still got his notes from his speech at the stinson beach high school banquet at sam's cafe somewhere at the north scottsdale tree fort)

yeah this is probably a **** decision

^ econ, this recruiting update post is 100% irrelevant, this guy wuz not recruited by the bears and a cal vs oregon matchup in football is not gonna happen in this decade & realistically never again in our lifetimes

and no, it's not news to anybody that oregon (whose football roster is mostly comprised of 2.5 gpa dumb azzs) is not the harvard of the northwest, the truth is that oregon best prepares its grads for careers at the coos bay flying beaver convenience store where it's night shift supervisors eventually marry a lot lizard with stds & die a slow painful death

2024 masters tournament at augusta national: 1st round update

playing with ice in his veins & conservative strategies (double bogey avoidance, laid up from 240 yards on the par 5 13th hole, carry wuz probably only 215 yards over rae's creek but the ball wuz in a significantly downhill/sidehill risky stance) max homa is currently at 4 under par & tied for 4th place when play resumes tomorrow morning for him on the par 4 14th hole (should not be a tough opening drive)...huge kudos to his caddie/childhood friend/neighbor in the arcadia district (scottsdale) joe greiner keeping max loose but focused with the massive tiger crowds a potential major distraction


ben an birdied 3 of the par 5s & missed a 4 footer for birdie on the par 5 15th hole, an needs to continue to successfully attack the par 5s while clearing up the small mistakes which resulted in 5 bogeys (offset by an en fuego 7 birdies) en route to a strong opening round 70 & is tied for 9th place...ben got his wife & 2 small kids with him this week in a rental house tryna keep it a comfortable low key family affair


who changes putters before a major tournament?...colin morikawa got a new putter this week & is still shoving putts tentatively which results in missing right of the cup...to his credit colin is bringing in his caddie jj for some of the green reads (which shocky has been advocating for forever), the reality is that both of morikawa's 2 major championship wins wuz on relatively flat greens at harding park (pga championship) & royal st georges (british open)...he's currently one over par after 10 holes with his drive in the center of the 11th fairway...colin's positive body language (losers adopt frowny faces/slumped shoulders when adversity in life arises as it inevitably will from time to time) says a lot about his resilience & character which is not surprising for a haas biz ad grad

football spring portal transfer window update:

the portal transfer reopens again for 15 days next monday from april 15th to 30th, this is gonna be an insane period for collegiate staffs nationwide

if there are any other bears who intend to enter the portal it's very unlikely that they will practice tomorrow and/or saturday's semi scrimmage...guys like myles jernigan who feel they got no chance of starting & that will be earning their berkeley degrees this spring/summer will be potential departures that declare via their social media feeds this weekend...casual fans think the bears grad transfers are gonna get offered by other schools & simply play in new programs but the truth is that a majority of them never play another down of football (see shocky's posts on scholly roster departures/destinations for the last 2 cycles)

as noted in the scholly roster math post, there are currently 33 additions & 33 departures right now for fall of 2024 schollys at an equilibrium of the ncca 85 max schollys

the #1 portal transfer alpha apex predator outside linebacker (the program's biggest need for an infusion of talent) target is anthony jones who took an official visit last week...anthony appreciates the family vibe of the cal football program & in the last 24 hours has been offered by ucla & central florida...a decision is imminent

Cal needs some players to depart as the staff has indicated they intend to pursue several more players when the portal opens. I do think there will likely be some departures that some Cal fans will be surprised by.

So yes those that can have a degree in hand by summer but not in a starting role could enter. But others that have not made progress in the program and have been recruited over will have decisions to make.
