but marshall cherrington's past over utilization of the academic silver bullet admissions (sub 3.0 gpas in high school) loophole has not worked out well generally speaking for either the students or the football program...in today's fluid transfer portal era academically struggling students will be the 1st names in the portal
conversely high gpa student athletes tend to understand that a berkeley degree (just like stanford & ivy league diplomas) is a bridge to building generational wealth & worth millions of dollars over a lifetime and are therefore not likely to seek a one time nil payment from a truck stop academic skool
keep in mind that gpas are more critical for the long term retention of high schoolers than grad transfers as the cert program admissions process is signifanctly less rigorous than the berkeley admissions evaluations for undergraduates

Or they get help. Way back in 1981 my Cal grades went up almost one full grade point after I met my girlfriend who was working in a modern office as a paralegal. As a philosophy major most of my graded work was papers. My girlfriend and future wife could proofread, correct and then professionally type on a word processor all of my papers. The content of the papers was the same, the quality of them was much better. It made a difference. I got lucky. I expect that the football academic "advisors" have ways to get players the help they need.
