Big beer guy, so excited to drink at Fieldwork, Great Notion, and the new Cellarmaker. Will I be making a mistake going over to Oakland? There's a brewery over there as well called Sante Adairus I'm interested in hitting up.
No you wouldn't be making a mistake going to Oakland. I've lived there for 30 years. Some of the best food, bars, and sights in the Bay Area. It might have a bad rap nationally but honestly I prefer it to hanging out in San Francisco.

If you need some recommendations for places to go just ask. Some great Michelin star restaurants (including one of the only Michelin star BBQ joints on the West Coast), a bunch of great trendy restaurants of any cuisine, some incredibly fun bars and clubs (cheaper than the city too), if you're into hikes or just great natural settings a lot of it is preferable to SF (hiking in the Oakland Hills, Lake Temescal, Lake Merrit, etc. IMO better than most of SF which has the palace of fine arts but not a lot of gorgeous locales within the city limits), and if you want taco trucks there's some of the best Mexican food of anywhere in the country.

Honestly I hang out in SF sometimes but mostly it's just a grey, bland, piss-smelling city, there are some parts of Oakland you don't wanna go but anywhere you'd likely be stopping is going to be pretty with no crime.

Anyway that's just my take and you'll see Berkeley on game day (park a little away from the stadium and walk down Telegraph through the Sather Gate) and probably worth stopping by SF's famous Chinatown but other than that Oakland is a much better city to hang out in during the week. Again, just my opinion but knowing what I know growing up and living in the Bay Area for most of my life that's how I'd play it

Thank you! This is fantastic info. I'll definitely check out Oakland.
I'm assuming someone else has probably mentioned it in the thread, but no matter if you're in SF, Berkeley, or Oakland I'd legitimately caution you to not keep valuables in your car if you drive. It's easy enough to just take the precautions ahead of time for peace of mind. And I'd recommend getting by with public transit, rideshares, walking if you're staying with in the Bay Area to keep things simple.

However, you'll prooooobably be pretty safe in the specific Fieldwork/Great Notion areas as far as parking goes. I think those could be counted as nicer areas. Near to Great Notion is also Rare Barrel, Wondrous Brewing, and Tenma Beer Project that are accessible. For downtown Oakland, if you go to Sante Adairus, Dokkabier is a pretty unique brewery that does Asian-inspired craft beer which recently opened up a physical location. And IIRC, it was started at least in part by a Berkeley grad. Original Pattern is also pretty good in the area.
Tiny note on the beer tip: Cellarmaker, formerly brewing in SF, now brews exclusively in the East Bay, and has locations in Berkeley (they bought the Rare Barrel) which just opened this past weekend, and coming very soon in Jack London Square opening in the next few weeks.

Another beer tip: if you are renting a car then you won't have to worry as much about the car break ins when visiting Faction, Admiral Maltings and Almanac on the old Alameda Naval Air Station. Great beer scene even with the road torn up in front of the latter two.
Excellent call on Faction - I was there just this past weekend. You should have mentioned the breathtaking view across the Bay to The City!

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Triple Rock in Berkeley! They were part of the original wave of brewpubs - have been around since the mid-1980s. They give a nod to at least some brewing fads (juicy IPAs, for example), but are not afraid to also brew some malty classics. Sitting on their top deck as the sun sets after a Cal victory . . . it doesn't get any better.

Great points both! Triple Rock is one of the only places to get a true bitter and the spinach and artichoke dip is spectacular!

The view from Faction of the former Mythbusters non-explosive/ordinance testing area with the bay bridge and SF views is breathtaking indeed! Too bad that the St. George tasting room next door hasn't reopened post-COVID shut downs save for a couple of weeks back in 2021.

I had heard the rumor about Humble Sea, but haven't wanted to get my hopes up…great, great brew pub in SC (the only location I have been to…)

Another truly Berkeley gem a bit off the beaten path, but on the way from Campus to Fieldwork and Gilman St is the Westbrae Biergarten with the Brazil Cafe.

Farther afield to the west, East Brother in Pt. Richmond is terrific, especially when La Santa Torta is there!

Edited to add: Can't forget Triple Rock's parent with one of the best beer gardens in the Bay Area: Drake's Dealership...Humphrey Slocumb ice cream just outside is a can't miss too!

Nice to have some Auburn fans on here. Welcome! Hope you all enjoy the trip (other than the obvious part).

We love these marquee OOC games and will be thrilled to host you. Unsurprisingly perhaps, I think you will find the experience "chill" in that absolutely no one will hassle you over your football allegiance. I would love to say that will be because of a surfeit of good manners on our part, but the reality is that most of the people you run into on the streets of Berkeley will be unaware that a football game is even being played that day. I wish that were a joke but it is not. You may however have someone who wants to engage with you on the Vietnam War or the Palestinian/Israeli conflict (for many of Berkeley's permanent residents the 60's and 70's never really ended). But the city is vibrant and unique and the campus is beautiful. You won't be disappointed.

On football, I think we will make a game of this for you. Now make no mistake Cal fans, Hugh Freeze absolutely killed it in the portal. He got a number of players we would have loved to pick up (and in a few cases even tried to pick up). Justin Rogers, Caleb Burton, Avery Jones, Gunner Britton, Dillon Wade, Jaden Muskrat, etc., etc. (those last two really hurt because we badly wanted them to shore up our offensive line and were in it with them - although candidly I think Wade was a pipe dream. From SEC country and was probably not coming this far out west. But he was the number one OT in the portal and and Auburn got him). But Cal did very well in the portal as well and our late additions of a few strong offensive linemen of our own definitely made me feel good about where we ended. And honestly in terms of speed I think we did better than Auburn did. There are some real ballers who were added to Cal's team in the cycle.

History also would caution Auburn fans against taking Cal too lightly. Just in the last decade we have won back to back OOC games against Ole Miss, UNC and Texas. All of those fan bases pre-season made the mistake of looking at Cal's horrific win/loss ratio from the prior season and thinking this was going to be a cakewalk. What they learned is what we Cal fans have always known. Namely that the real problem with Cal's teams is not talent. The real problem is depth. We can play with most teams early in the season. But by the time late October and November roll around and we are on our second and third string we cannot. Your backups are generally better than ours. But our starters will be the ones playing here and they can hang.

Where both teams will have an issue in such an early season game will be in overall cohesion of the units. I think Auburn will literally be starting an entirely new team at all 11 positions on offensive this year. That's nuts. And how well they play together as a group will be the question. I'm guessing there will be some hiccups with an entirely new roster early season. But we have significant additions ourselves and our untested but physically gifted transfer QB could make this extremely interesting - for both teams. No one knows how that will come out.

Looking forward, I think you'll be surprised to see how well Cal travels when we return the trip next year. Despite our (generally deserved) reputation of having an alumni base composed of Godless commie hippies, what you'll find is Cal is a large and diverse school. So while most of our alums would struggle to tell you the difference between an offensive guard and a tackle, the school is big enough that just a fraction of our alumni base is more than enough to make a highly respectable showing. Will we bring 12k to Auburn next year? Probably not, but we COULD (if they could find tickets) and even that is pretty remarkable given our lack of anything approximating success over the past 20 years or so. For a marquee SEC game we'll definitely be over 6k. I know I personally wouldn't miss the trip for anything.

Anyway, welcome to those making the trip to Cali. Glad you'll join us. War Eagle!
Not to mention, we beat Ole Miss AT their place in 2019 while playing a TE at OLB and a true freshman at OLB. All our OLBs were hurt that game. It was close at the end, but it really wasn't that close of a game for most of it. And the first time we beat them in 2017, they had DK Metcalf, AJ Brown, Van Jefferson, Breeland Speaks, Benito Jones, Marquis Haynes, Greg Little, etc. For whatever reason, we play really well in our OOC games.

Also, my dad had 4 coaches on Auburn's staff that were his clients the year they went to the Natty. I got to be at the Iron Bowl Kick Six game and I have it recorded. Rushed the field and everything. It is the sole photo/video that I make sure transfers whenever I get a new phone. I swear the quality gets worse and worse with each phone too. I also got to go to Pasadena to watch them play FSU at the Rose Bowl for the Natty. Thought they had that game. Perfect venue though. I have had a soft spot in my heart for Auburn, but boy, y'all aren't ready for the Bears this year. We'll have the fastest QB you'll face, an elite RB, one of the top secondaries you'll face, and some VERY competitive position groups everywhere except probably OL still. They have improved though. I would wish you good luck, but tbh I hope you have horrible luck during the game. Go Bears! See you on The Plains next year!

Also for the Auburn fans - As someone who came here from Arkansas, go to Angeline's Louisiana Kitchen. It's upscale Southern food. Really damn good. Get the fried chicken or the fried catfish, GET THE BBQ SHRIMP, and as much sweet tea you can drink. It's the only place you can get it out here.

For breakfast, go to La Note, as someone mentioned, or stop by my pregame morning ritual of Dream Fluff on the corner of College and Ashby. Just ask Benji Palu if it's good.

Gaumenkitzel is a really good authentic German restaurant. Get the Schnitzel or the Jaegerschnitzel with a mushroom cream sauce on top. Great German/Austrian beer selection on tap too.

If you are in SF, go to Fior d'Italia which is the oldest Italian restaurant in the US. Surprisingly not in NY or CT, but right here in our backyard.
Also if you are in SF, try State Bird Provision. Really really cool concept with a menu that changes daily. They bring around various concoctions of food that the chefs just freestyle and they have prices on the trays and you just pick what you want if you want to try it.

If you want gas Thai food go to Yimm and Imm. They are sister restaurants under the same ownership. Yimm has the best Pumpkin Curry (I add duck) and then get the Pad Kee Mao. I crave it daily because it's walking distance from where I live.

If you are in Marin area in the North Bay, go to Sol Food and get the bistec sandwich and/or shrimp po'boy with a mango limeade after a nice hike to Mt. Tamalpais where it has the most stunning view of SF and Golden Gate. It is unique in that you will be above the clouds when they roll in which is really cool. You can even drive all the way up.

The Station in on the little island in front of the Claremont is also exceptional... with exceptionally bad service unfortunately. But when you eventually get your food and delicious beer, it is really good. Go for the "Burgerito" or the "Fried Chicken Burgerito".

Lucia's on Shattuck has really really good pasta and pizza too.

I hope this list not only helps Auburn fans, but also helps Cal fans that don't know these incredible eateries around the Bay.

People that excuse crime in big cities don't seem to realize that in an urban environment you cannot get away from some nasty stuff, while in rural areas you can tuck and hide. I hear many trying to compare crime in NYC and Bakersfield, a red vs. blue political thing, but in Bakersfield you don't have to ride the subway or bus as your only means of transport. Urban no garage, or expensive garage. And on and on.

My SF experience is quite good compared to what most hear. I have been all over the Sunset, Richmond, Marina, Financial District, even SoMa, without seeing much evidence of the horrors of the Tenderloing, Union Square to City Hall...Stay away and all is well.

Fantastic news indeed! If you go there, I would encourage you to visit Admiral Maltings that provides malt to the majority of brewers on the west coast where the tap room booths overlook the malt drying floor. The tap room always has 20-30 of the beers that include their malts....and one of the best hot dogs I have ever had on a Firebrand bakery bun.

For a side trip while on Alameda, you have to visit Forbidden Island! One of the best tiki bars in the world!

Pretty sure they did not play Compton High. USC is in L.A. That is like calling Potrero Hill or Bayview "Oakland" or "Richmond."

For those who are up for watching a little football, I would recommend watching the 2017 Ole Miss at Cal game, Justin Wilcox's first year as HC.

Not to compare two SEC teams playing at Cal per se, but to get a sense of what it might be like for a Central time zone team to come to California to play a night game.

This was a game of two halves. Ole Miss was a mediocre SEC team that year but they dominated the first half and their WRs ran circles around our DBs. At halftime I thought Cal was done.

But the 2nd half was very different. Ole Miss got shut out. My memory is that Cal's defense started to dominate, and Ole Miss looked tired and made a lot of mistakes. So this could be seen as a cautionary tale for a Central time zone team coming to play a night game on the West Coast, especially early in the season.

Oh, I also made a phone video at the game showing the night game experience, with some pre-game, halftime, and Cal highlights. Attendance was bad, but the student section was enthusiastic. Not sure what kind of attendance we expect for Auburn.

I may have missed it, and apologies if I did, but I don't recall anyone mentioning Zachary's Pizza. I try very hard never to miss a chance to go there - lunch for night games, and dinner after for day games. I prefer the location on College, but that's probably because it's the one I always went to when I was in law school. But either location works.

Even having now been to a few key places in Chicago, it's still my favorite, and I can't find anything particularly close in Southern California. Get the stuffed spinach mushroom, or whatever tickles your fancy. But I highly recommend stuffed over thin crust. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it, and I just ate lunch.

I may have missed it, and apologies if I did, but I don't recall anyone mentioning Zachary's Pizza. I try very hard never to miss a chance to go there - lunch for night games, and dinner after for day games. Zach's is great, but it doesn't hold a candle to the best Chicago pizza shops imo. A lot of people swear by Giordano's or Lou Malnati's, but bar none my all time favorite is Pequod's.

I took my wife (born and raised in Chicago) to Zach's on a date, raving about how good it was going to be (I had not been to Chicago yet by that point). She was ... not impressed. On my first trip to Chicago to meet her family, I realized why, in spades.

edit - is Bakesale Betty's still open in Oakland off Telegraph?

I have been to Pequod's (went while staying in Chicago on the way to South Bend last year) and they are amazing of course but I still love Zachary's.

We essentially shut them out for three quarters. They scored really early in the second quarter and went into halftime leading 16-7.

I also forgot to mention Artichoke Pizza. Haven't been to Zachary's, but honestly Artichoke may be one of my favorites.

Bakesale Betty's is still there, but it has gone downhill IMO. They changed the bun and now I feel like it is like any other fried chicken sandwich out there. Ike's may make a better one at this point

Our friends from Auburn are also learning from this thread that there is no topic on Bear Insider that will not eventually devolve into a discussion of food. You'll just have to roll with it for the next few months.

Please, please don't ask for a recommendation of favorite burrito shops. If you do we'll never circle back to football again.

I agree for the most part. Cal isn't good under Wilcox and nothing suggests Cal has what it takes to beat even a below-average SEC team. Heck, last year a below-average SEC team beat UTAH, for crying out loud. There's at least an even chance that this Auburn team is better than that Florida team. Hate the SEC and their "arrogant" fans all you want, but that conference is the toughest there is to beat. Frankly, I think Vandy would beat Cal.

Auburn fans want to be competitive with Bama; Cal fans want to be competitive with Nevada. I wouldn't at all be surprised if the stadium ends up being majority Auburn on game day. Don't worry, their fans are really nice and will be happy to show how they're not as rude as Bama fans. I doubt Cal fans will show the same courtesy.

I don't know about this getting ugly early. I could easily see it being ugly for both teams the entire game, neither team is likely to be even halfway decent this year. But Auburn will most likely win by 2+ TDs on their way to battling with Florida for six wins and that last bowl berth.

The slaw is still the superstar in that sandwich On the east bay sandwich tip high high high recommendation for nearby Ok's Deli at 40th & Telegraph. Great at classics (italian combo, roast beef, etc) but their rotating specialties, including Spam Mi (Spam Musubi - Bahn Mi), Ebi Katsu, Sichuan Hot Fried Chicken, are all great.

West coast pizza and barbeque blows. I'd eat pizza out of a dumpster in New York and bbq out of a garbage can in Memphis before wasting time on West Coast variants.

I'm not sure this digression is doing a good job of selling this series to our friends from Auburn.

Everywhere has problems. SF isn't exactly Compton (last place Auburn played in California). Our friends from Alabama will be fine. Weather is spectacular and naturally beauty unparalleled. The City itself is also extremely iconic - and Berkeley isn't in the City anyway.

I wouldn't leave a bag in visible view in my car in any major city in America candidly. Don't do that and everything will be fine.
This x100.

I'm not sure if you chose Bakersfield randomly but it has a very high violent crime rate per capita., 24 th nationally, higher than San Francisco
