Big beer guy, so excited to drink at Fieldwork, Great Notion, and the new Cellarmaker. Will I be making a mistake going over to Oakland? There's a brewery over there as well called Sante Adairus I'm interested in hitting up.
No you wouldn't be making a mistake going to Oakland. I've lived there for 30 years. Some of the best food, bars, and sights in the Bay Area. It might have a bad rap nationally but honestly I prefer it to hanging out in San Francisco.

If you need some recommendations for places to go just ask. Some great Michelin star restaurants (including one of the only Michelin star BBQ joints on the West Coast), a bunch of great trendy restaurants of any cuisine, some incredibly fun bars and clubs (cheaper than the city too), if you're into hikes or just great natural settings a lot of it is preferable to SF (hiking in the Oakland Hills, Lake Temescal, Lake Merrit, etc. IMO better than most of SF which has the palace of fine arts but not a lot of gorgeous locales within the city limits), and if you want taco trucks there's some of the best Mexican food of anywhere in the country.

Honestly I hang out in SF sometimes but mostly it's just a grey, bland, piss-smelling city, there are some parts of Oakland you don't wanna go but anywhere you'd likely be stopping is going to be pretty with no crime.

Anyway that's just my take and you'll see Berkeley on game day (park a little away from the stadium and walk down Telegraph through the Sather Gate) and probably worth stopping by SF's famous Chinatown but other than that Oakland is a much better city to hang out in during the week. Again, just my opinion but knowing what I know growing up and living in the Bay Area for most of my life that's how I'd play it

Thank you! This is fantastic info. I'll definitely check out Oakland.
I'm assuming someone else has probably mentioned it in the thread, but no matter if you're in SF, Berkeley, or Oakland I'd legitimately caution you to not keep valuables in your car if you drive. It's easy enough to just take the precautions ahead of time for peace of mind. And I'd recommend getting by with public transit, rideshares, walking if you're staying with in the Bay Area to keep things simple.

However, you'll prooooobably be pretty safe in the specific Fieldwork/Great Notion areas as far as parking goes. I think those could be counted as nicer areas. Near to Great Notion is also Rare Barrel, Wondrous Brewing, and Tenma Beer Project that are accessible. For downtown Oakland, if you go to Sante Adairus, Dokkabier is a pretty unique brewery that does Asian-inspired craft beer which recently opened up a physical location. And IIRC, it was started at least in part by a Berkeley grad. Original Pattern is also pretty good in the area.
Tiny note on the beer tip: Cellarmaker, formerly brewing in SF, now brews exclusively in the East Bay, and has locations in Berkeley (they bought the Rare Barrel) which just opened this past weekend, and coming very soon in Jack London Square opening in the next few weeks.

Another beer tip: if you are renting a car then you won't have to worry as much about the car break ins when visiting Faction, Admiral Maltings and Almanac on the old Alameda Naval Air Station. Great beer scene even with the road torn up in front of the latter two.
Terrific options! and Humble Sea is opening a new taproom there too in a matter of weeks, just around the corner from Almanac/Rake

Dang, has no clue Humble Sea would be nearby! We sometimes get their cans in distribution to the Atlanta area and I've loved what I've sipped on. I'll add that to the list!
Fantastic news indeed! If you go there, I would encourage you to visit Admiral Maltings that provides malt to the majority of brewers on the west coast where the tap room booths overlook the malt drying floor. The tap room always has 20-30 of the beers that include their malts....and one of the best hot dogs I have ever had on a Firebrand bakery bun.

For a side trip while on Alameda, you have to visit Forbidden Island! One of the best tiki bars in the world!

Will do

I agree for the most part. Cal isn't good under Wilcox and nothing suggests Cal has what it takes to beat even a below-average SEC team. Heck, last year a below-average SEC team beat UTAH, for crying out loud. There's at least an even chance that this Auburn team is better than that Florida team. Hate the SEC and their "arrogant" fans all you want, but that conference is the toughest there is to beat. Frankly, I think Vandy would beat Cal.

Auburn fans want to be competitive with Bama; Cal fans want to be competitive with Nevada. I wouldn't at all be surprised if the stadium ends up being majority Auburn on game day. Don't worry, their fans are really nice and will be happy to show how they're not as rude as Bama fans. I doubt Cal fans will show the same courtesy.

I don't know about this getting ugly early. I could easily see it being ugly for both teams the entire game, neither team is likely to be even halfway decent this year. But Auburn will most likely win by 2+ TDs on their way to battling with Florida for six wins and that last bowl berth.
I'll bet you $1000 the stadium is not majority Auburn fans.

I'm not sure this digression is doing a good job of selling this series to our friends from Auburn.

Everywhere has problems. SF isn't exactly Compton (last place Auburn played in California). Our friends from Alabama will be fine. Weather is spectacular and naturally beauty unparalleled. The City itself is also extremely iconic - and Berkeley isn't in the City anyway.

I wouldn't leave a bag in visible view in my car in any major city in America candidly. Don't do that and everything will be fine.
This x100.
People that excuse crime in big cities don't seem to realize that in an urban environment you cannot get away from some nasty stuff, while in rural areas you can tuck and hide. I hear many trying to compare crime in NYC and Bakersfield, a red vs. blue political thing, but in Bakersfield you don't have to ride the subway or bus as your only means of transport. Urban no garage, or expensive garage. And on and on.

My SF experience is quite good compared to what most hear. I have been all over the Sunset, Richmond, Marina, Financial District, even SoMa, without seeing much evidence of the horrors of the Tenderloing, Union Square to City Hall...Stay away and all is well.

I'm not sure if you chose Bakersfield randomly but it has a very high violent crime rate per capita., 24 th nationally, higher than San Francisco

https://247wallst.com/city/bakersfield-ca-is-among-the-most-dangerous-us-metro-areas/
I chose it for that very reason. Is it not OK to represent what is, one way or the other. Bakersfield is hit by Libs because it is McCarthy's district. Any big city urban area because it is Dem controlled. Both have bad crime, but you sure ain't gotta ride a bus or subway to work in Bakersfield. Point being, crappy analogy.

If you are coming to Santa Rosa for wine, don't forget our beer. It's too late to get Pliny the Younger from Russian River Brewery this year, but they have other very good ones. HenHouse Brewing is good too as well as Lagunitas Brewing in Petaluma.

If you like tall trees, see the redwoods in Armstrong Woods west of Santa Rosa. If you want to see really tall trees, you need to go further north. I'll be visiting Redwood National Park and Prairie Creek State Park in August.

Yeah dude has obviously never been down there, Bakersfield is a LARGE suburban town with a lot of residential neighborhoods that are boring of course but clean and quiet, and forget about taking the bus, better have your own wheels getting around in that town.

Zach's is great, but it doesn't hold a candle to the best Chicago pizza shops imo. A lot of people swear by Giordano's or Lou Malnati's, but bar none my all time favorite is Pequod's.

I took my wife (born and raised in Chicago) to Zach's on a date, raving about how good it was going to be (I had not been to Chicago yet by that point). She was ... not impressed. On my first trip to Chicago to meet her family, I realized why, in spades.

I like Giordano's and prefer it to Lou Malnati's, but I'd take Zach's over either one. I admittedly have not tried Pequod's.

Well be prepared to see ****ing nuclear devastation in and around Santa Rosa if you haven't been since 2016. The hillsides look like a nuke went off.
As for Sonoma County recommendations I might add the following suggestions…
Restaurant to try
Diavola in Geyserville. Hands down the best pizza you will try anywhere. And I've tried pizza everywhere around the world. You will not find better. Trust me on that. And you can't go wrong with anything else in that place. Try the dictator pizza. It is pure ecstasy. I know it sounds gross but just try it.

If I were you I would go wine tasting closer to Sebastopol in west Sonoma county. Better wines more Pinot types imho and less crowds

Also if in west county you might try the Barlow in Sebastopol as well if you like spirits they have a distillery there that is on point.

Entirely possible.

In 2016 we lost to San Diego State on the road then a week later beat #11 Texas at home.

In 2012 we lost to Nevada at home then two weeks later almost, should have, beat #12 Ohio State on the road.

That part of Oakland is fine. It's not lovely, but it's fine. You can be cautious and not leave anything visible in your car.

Also consider checking out the new Humble Sea in Alameda.

4) Cellarmaker/Rare Barrel
5) Sante Adairius

I'd take the over, and I feel Auburn will cover. We're a 7 pt underdog, too which makes me wonder how badly I'm misreading Freeze's offense. Vegas usually knows more than fans. I mean, Auburn let U-Mass average 5.3 yards rushing. I think Ott and Ifanse do much better. But...

U-Mass offesnive game didn't really show Freeze's hand. They didn't throw much, but when they did they put up ridiculous yards. They didn't play their star running back Jarquez Hunter because of that sex video scandal, but their running back by committee approach looks hard to stop. Hunter will be starting against Cal, though. And how hard is it for us to stop mobile quarterbacks? Yeah, cuz Robby Ashford is that threat and it showed, although we know 90% of the time he is going to run.

Vegas doesn't know more than fans they rely on the consensus of bettors plus a few so called experts who supposedly think last years Cal offensive numbers apply to this season.
That aside,
I've said it previously and I'll say it again. If auburn's offense is running according to the previous iterations of Hugh freeze this sets up extremely nicely for us defensively. He likes to attack lbs in short dink and dunks. The lbs are our strength and the specialty of Sirmon. So they're going to have to get creative. Further I think our front negates the rushing attack even if Jarquez is playing and with the giant oline. Yes they are big but they aren't mobile and if the lbs take away the middle of the field classic Hugh freeze short passing game then that leaves them with the deep ball and I don't see that happening reliably.

Offensively auburn has 3 scholarship dbs in their 2 deep one of whom is a true frosh. Last week their d front looked extremely sus. So either they stack the box and leave that inexperience in man or they drop into zone and Ott has a field day.
Staying with my preseason score prediction of cal 38 a auburn 21
For reference I had cal 45- unt 14 in game 1

Some spots beyond the breweries for you to check out:
Westbrae Biergarten
Study Hall rooftop lounge (above Marriott dtown berkeley)
Cheeseboard Pizza (sourdough flatbreads)
Mezzo cafe / Raleigh's pub
Henry's pub for tailgating
Jupiter brewpub and pizza

Views of the bay from Grizzly Peak above campus. This is above all the labs where the Oppenheimer folks came from.

Also weather in the day will usually be spectacularly comfortable but beware the temp drops at night (no humidity). Recommend you wear jeans and have a layer.

I like the confidence combined with accuracy angle of your post.

Did that Auburn-Cal write up seriously compare Payton Thorne to the PAC 12 quarterbacks that Cal faced last year? The p2p epidemic must have hit Alabama cuz that dude is out of his mind. Thorne looks like he's good for 1.5 TD and 1 pick per game.

I guess we'll see by game 6 or so. He looked solid Saturday but he's also behind a solid OL and has good coaching now.

I'd be very surprised if either team wins by double digits, and I certainly don't believe Cal has the talent to do that to Auburn, but we'll see. My guess is Auburn will have their way on the ground with Cal early and Hugh will show much more through the air when Cal brings extra bodies to try and limit the ground game. IMO our OL will be top four-five in the SEC, and that usually doesn't bode well for anyone looking to limit the talent we have in our backfield.

If I had to take a guess, the score looks something like 28-24. I look forward to another competitive game vs a Pac12 team like we've had with Oregon and Washington.

Cheers.
I do think this is a close one.
While I'm nervous about auburn's size I'm also confident in our identity and how it matches.
I think the difference will ultimately come down to whether or not your secondary can play in man coverage and also a small dose of special teams. But I have to stick with cal not just cuz alma but also cuz we're at home.
Our dline vs your oline is interesting as well.
Freeze stated they have about 9 guys in oline rotation and we have about 8 in our dline rotation.
Should be a great game.

I can count on one hand the amount of times Cal will send a blitz. Will dare you to beat their front 3-4 and their LBs. One of whom is an all-american candidate. Cal may lose, but Auburn will simply have to be better on the outside, because Wilcox plays man almost exclusively. Cal's defense is all about getting you in 3rd and 3-5 yards. If you can consistently convert, you'll be successful. Get a pass drop or a penalty and you get in real trouble vs our defense.
