No you wouldn't be making a mistake going to Oakland. I've lived there for 30 years. Some of the best food, bars, and sights in the Bay Area. It might have a bad rap nationally but honestly I prefer it to hanging out in San Francisco.

If you need some recommendations for places to go just ask. Some great Michelin star restaurants (including one of the only Michelin star BBQ joints on the West Coast), a bunch of great trendy restaurants of any cuisine, some incredibly fun bars and clubs (cheaper than the city too), if you're into hikes or just great natural settings a lot of it is preferable to SF (hiking in the Oakland Hills, Lake Temescal, Lake Merrit, etc. IMO better than most of SF which has the palace of fine arts but not a lot of gorgeous locales within the city limits), and if you want taco trucks there's some of the best Mexican food of anywhere in the country.

Honestly I hang out in SF sometimes but mostly it's just a grey, bland, piss-smelling city, there are some parts of Oakland you don't wanna go but anywhere you'd likely be stopping is going to be pretty with no crime.

I'm assuming someone else has probably mentioned it in the thread, but no matter if you're in SF, Berkeley, or Oakland I'd legitimately caution you to not keep valuables in your car if you drive. It's easy enough to just take the precautions ahead of time for peace of mind. And I'd recommend getting by with public transit, rideshares, walking if you're staying with in the Bay Area to keep things simple.

However, you'll prooooobably be pretty safe in the specific Fieldwork/Great Notion areas as far as parking goes. I think those could be counted as nicer areas. Near to Great Notion is also Rare Barrel, Wondrous Brewing, and Tenma Beer Project that are accessible. For downtown Oakland, if you go to Sante Adairus, Dokkabier is a pretty unique brewery that does Asian-inspired craft beer which recently opened up a physical location. And IIRC, it was started at least in part by a Berkeley grad. Original Pattern is also pretty good in the area.

Tiny note on the beer tip: Cellarmaker, formerly brewing in SF, now brews exclusively in the East Bay, and has locations in Berkeley (they bought the Rare Barrel) which just opened this past weekend, and coming very soon in Jack London Square opening in the next few weeks.

Another beer tip: if you are renting a car then you won't have to worry as much about the car break ins when visiting Faction, Admiral Maltings and Almanac on the old Alameda Naval Air Station. Great beer scene even with the road torn up in front of the latter two.

Fantastic news indeed! If you go there, I would encourage you to visit Admiral Maltings that provides malt to the majority of brewers on the west coast where the tap room booths overlook the malt drying floor. The tap room always has 20-30 of the beers that include their malts....and one of the best hot dogs I have ever had on a Firebrand bakery bun.

For a side trip while on Alameda, you have to visit Forbidden Island! One of the best tiki bars in the world!

I hear many trying to compare crime in NYC and Bakersfield, a red vs. blue political thing, but in Bakersfield you don't have to ride the subway or bus as your only means of transport. Urban no garage, or expensive garage. And on and on.

My SF experience is quite good compared to what most hear. I have been all over the Sunset, Richmond, Marina, Financial District, even SoMa, without seeing much evidence of the horrors of the Tenderloing, Union Square to City Hall...Stay away and all is well.

If you are coming to Santa Rosa for wine, don't forget our beer. It's too late to get Pliny the Younger from Russian River Brewery this year, but they have other very good ones. HenHouse Brewing is good too as well as Lagunitas Brewing in Petaluma.

If you like tall trees, see the redwoods in Armstrong Woods west of Santa Rosa. If you want to see really tall trees, you need to go further north. I'll be visiting Redwood National Park and Prairie Creek State Park in August.

Yeah dude has obviously never been down there, Bakersfield is a LARGE suburban town with a lot of residential neighborhoods that are boring of course but clean and quiet, and forget about taking the bus, better have your own wheels getting around in that town.

Diavola in Geyserville. Hands down the best pizza you will try anywhere. And I've tried pizza everywhere around the world. You will not find better. Trust me on that. And you can't go wrong with anything else in that place. Try the dictator pizza. It is pure ecstasy. I know it sounds gross but just try it.

If I were you I would go wine tasting closer to Sebastopol in west Sonoma county. Better wines more Pinot types imho and less crowds

Also if in west county you might try the Barlow in Sebastopol as well if you like spirits they have a distillery there that is on point.

In 2016 we lost to San Diego State on the road then a week later beat #11 Texas at home.

In 2012 we lost to Nevada at home then two weeks later almost, should have, beat #12 Ohio State on the road.

We are 100% hitting up Humble Sea. We drive in from wine country the Friday before and will be hitting up Humble Sea and Sante Adairius that afternoon, then Saturday we'll do a little pregaming at Fieldwork, Cellarmaker and GN.

Yeah, cuz Robby Ashford is that threat and it showed, although we know 90% of the time he is going to run.

Vegas doesn't know more than fans they rely on the consensus of bettors plus a few so called experts who supposedly think last years Cal offensive numbers apply to this season.
That aside,
I've said it previously and I'll say it again. If auburn's offense is running according to the previous iterations of Hugh freeze this sets up extremely nicely for us defensively. He likes to attack lbs in short dink and dunks. The lbs are our strength and the specialty of Sirmon. So they're going to have to get creative. U-Mass offesnive game didn't really show Freeze's hand. They didn't throw much, but when they did they put up ridiculous yards. They didn't play their star running back Jarquez Hunter because of that sex video scandal, but their running back by committee approach looks hard to stop. Hunter will be starting against Cal, though. And how hard is it for us to stop mobile quarterbacks? I'd be very surprised if either team wins by double digits, and I certainly don't believe Cal has the talent to do that to Auburn, but we'll see. My guess is Auburn will have their way on the ground with Cal early and Hugh will show much more through the air when Cal brings extra bodies to try and limit the ground game. IMO our OL will be top four-five in the SEC, and that usually doesn't bode well for anyone looking to limit the talent we have in our backfield.

If I had to take a guess, the score looks something like 28-24. I look forward to another competitive game vs a Pac12 team like we've had with Oregon and Washington.

My guess is Auburn will have their way on the ground with Cal early and Hugh will show much more through the air when Cal brings extra bodies to try and limit the ground game. I do think this is a close one.
While I'm nervous about auburn's size I'm also confident in our identity and how it matches.
I think the difference will ultimately come down to whether or not your secondary can play in man coverage and also a small dose of special teams. But I have to stick with cal not just cuz alma but also cuz we're at home.
Our dline vs your oline is interesting as well.
Freeze stated they have about 9 guys in oline rotation and we have about 8 in our dline rotation.
Should be a great game.

I can count on one hand the amount of times Cal will send a blitz. Will dare you to beat their front 3-4 and their LBs. One of whom is an all-american candidate. Cal may lose, but Auburn will simply have to be better on the outside, because Wilcox plays man almost exclusively. Cal's defense is all about getting you in 3rd and 3-5 yards. If you can consistently convert, you'll be successful. Get a pass drop or a penalty and you get in real trouble vs our defense.
