Any reason to believe Smit is not taking his better players with him to MSU?
Nothing is ever final until the first whistle blows, but:

RB Damien Martinez staying at Oregon State, felt 'lied to' by Jonathan Smith

Apparently there was a confrontation between Smith and some players in the locker room before the Civil War game when he told them he was leaving (yes, that's when he chose to tell his team).

Not surprisingly, some players and parents aren't big fans anymore. Focus on curated tweets towards the bottom of OP. I wonder if these Beavs have heard the tale of Tosh The Traitor? Makes Smith look like a Saint.

DJU will probably stay or turn pro due to the new 2nd transfer rules unless there's a special waiver for Smith leaving (doubt it). He could technically transfer and sit bc he never redshirted and also has the extra COVID year but why? Plus dad seems miffed (see above).
Please give to Cal Legends at https://calegends.com/calegendsdonate/donate-football/ and encourage everyone you know who loves Cal sports to do it too.

To be in the Top 1% of all NIL collectives we only need around 10% of alumni to give $300 per year. Please help spread the word. "If we don't broaden this base we're dead." - Sebastabear

Thanks for reading my sig! Please consider copying or adapting it and using it on all of your posts too. Go Bears!

Velling will go bigger. He's a legit TE and will garner significant interest. I think he's from the NW, so Oregon or UW if he wants to stay home. Otherwise it'll be the B10 or SEC for him.

Well, for one thing, he burned a lot of bridges on the way out..... you should see some of their tweets, they're pretty scathing... the players are pissed....Martinez already said no to MSU. Chiles is the big question mark, but based on his most recent cryptic tweet, I doubt he transfers to play for Smith.

Not sure if this is just for transfers in or a transfer portal 2024 master thread but we just had our first player to hit the portal (publicly, at least):
Ben Finley QB said his goodbyes and is testing the waters looking for a new home

That answers my question in the other thread about the backup QBs!

Best of luck to Ben.

Cal offers stud linebacker from UC Davis, 6'2", 238#s, grad transfer. Balled out against the Bears 2 years ago. Also offered by Furd.

"247Sports has already rated Buchanan has a 4-Star linebacker transfer."

I wonder if we'd try to go after Thor Griffith, DL from Harvard or Joey Slackman, DL from Penn. Gotta think they'd value the academic side a bit more huh? And they won't be far from home being in the ACC and all.

Agree. I like the All-Ivy guys.. My theory is that they are at the least decent, and possibly even good players, with a strong work ethic and the brains to handle a playbook. The theory is that while they might not be superstars, they'll be serviceable at the least and provide extra depth if they don't break into the starting lineup.

We offered the Harvard DL, but the Athletic said his top two are Ohio State or Michigan.

My working assumption is that Ivy League stars will be less swayed by the academic appeal we can offer compared to other transfers. These guys already have Ivy League degrees and my guess is the really good ones are looking for a bag and a "big-time" football experience. Guys who would not have gone to an SEC school due to the academics out of high school won't have as big of an issue playing at somewhere like LSU or Ole Miss for a year.

With the transfer portal now in full swing, your UCLA Bruins have extended an offer immediately to a player who's been garnering interest from all over the country.

As reported via his personal Twitter account, Harvard defensive tackle Thor Griffith announced that he had received an official offer from Chip Kelly and the UCLA Bruins.

UCLA joins a host of other schools that have begun recruiting the all-league interior lineman. According to Griffith, he's also received offers from the likes of Stanford, Minnesota, Cal, Boston College, Houston, and Louisville (among others).

Would be another big transfer from SDSU just like McMorris was. He's a 2x All-Conference IOL who would shore up the middle of our OL and be huge for Ott to go off even more next season, he'd be great on the interior with Vatikani and would help our offense take the next step

LT Rohme was jumped by Barrett Miller but was possible starter next season? His backup Jackson Brown had transferred in the Spring to Pitt. Wonder who will play LT next year.

Welcome to continuous instability in college football. Ucla steals a 5 star qb from Oregon at the end of 2022 and he's already gone by the end of 2023. Crazy.

Right now only graduate transfer can formally enter (or if their head coach has left). On Dec 4th I believe it's open for all players.

Dec 4 is the day when undergraduate students can officially enter the portal. Right now grad students can enter. And players whose coach has left the school can enter. You are seeing posts from players saying they are intending to transfer and will enter "officially" on Dec 4.

As for offers. Many offers have been extended all during the season via back channels. Early direct contact to the players is "illegal". But players do reach out through back channels. And communication is done via back channels. But many programs ignore the direct contact rule. They reach out and try and secure some "commitments" early. If you wait for the players to declare except in some rare instances you are late to the party. At least as it applies to the better players.

Coaches are hearing from players now and throughout the season that they have an offer pending and want to know where they stand at their current school.

I heard earlier today on a college football radio show that around 1500 players are expected to enter after Dec 4. That would bring the overall number to about 2000 players.

Unless it's a big impact guy (we know who), there will be more than enough talent to fill any gaps we may have once the portal opens.

There will be talent available. Does Cal have the NIL $$ to pull in the needed players? You can certainly add players but the better players are in demand and cost.

Cal added a ton of players last portal cycle. The team went 6-6 and barely made a bowl game. If you want to improve the program the investment in NIL $$ needs to be there along with better coaching and University support. Not sure that Cal is strong enough in any of these areas to improve the program much beyond where they are today.

I really like to agree with this line of reasoning and thinking but do recall all the times I have been p*ssed at out Bears for "playing stupid" during a game....You can name almost any mistake that can be made in FB and we do our share, all while being "so much smarter". Some, I do like Ivy like players, but not sure the reasoning holds.

A lot will change but right now my top targets would be:

WR Josh Kelly from WSU
DT Joey Slackman from Penn (we know he's academically qualified)
LB Teddye Buchanan from Davis (would slot in to replace KEO)
OL Cade Bennett from SDSU

I only know that Buchanan and Bennett have been offered but this is just my picks for now

You are right. A lot will change. That said if Kelly, Buchanan or Bennett want in I am all for it.

Others I have a major interest in for now.

Ja'Mori Maclin WR - UNT
Rico Flores WR - ND
Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson OT -SDSU
NaNa Osafo-Mensah Edge - ND
Leon Lowery Edge - Syracuse

I think putting Endries and Grizzell (both walk-ons) on scholarship should be Cal's first priority. Probably will need some NIL for both of them as well.

Smith and Patu have so far entered the Portal from Furd.

Yurosak is expected to seek guidance from the NFL. In mock draft ratings he is a 6th to 7th rounder.
