I did some internet sleuthing. Most penalties in a game occurred in 2019 when there was a pregame fight between Texas and Oklahoma thus tallying over 100 penalties before the game started.

Prior to that, the record was 36 in 1986. I tried to cross-reference the ESPN box score, but I think this game broke it, as its not available.
Per the broadcast, we had 19 first half penalties. So on track to overtake second place.

That was a truly horrible half of football. Borderline unwatchable.
Wilcox just needs more time to get his own guys in there. Also, what else can you expect with a barometric pressure like this?

Kick was on target…just short.

Except that it would've been short from 50
Did you see the snap?

I can't figure out what was worse the Cheeze-It Bowl or this game. It's a toss-up.

One of the worst half I have ever seen in all of organized football; pop Warner, flag football, JV, varsity, NAIA, NCAA and whatever level of football possibly imagined….

It is a pressure cooker around these parts lol

If it wasn't for garbage SDSU penalties and QB play, this first half would look a lot like the Idaho game last year

The Cheez It bowl was one of the worst games in the history of the sport. It was so bad that it entertaining in a morbid way.

And one of the most frustrating. C'mon Cal, you are better than this. And again, the refs absolutely suck!!
Start Slowly and taper off

Missing Woodson, which could be a problem. They get the ball to start the third. But I guess we get Harris back for the second half.

I'll never cease to be amazed by how stupid some CAL fans are. It was a 62 yard attempt. It landed around 3 yards into the EZ. Arithmetic: do it.

SDS has 13 for 100 yards
CAL has only 6 for 48

so there's that.

GO BEARS!!!

I feel like the offense has had moments, and are close to putting it all together. They've had a few moments of stupidity. Dychess not falling forward, calling timeout after the first down, holding penalties.

If not for coming up JUST short on some 3rd down completions, the whole half might look different. It's been a weird, choppy game all around.

Yeah you strike me as a Rhodes Scholar. Ball barely made it into the end zone, which was 52 yards from the kick. Don't think it's good from 50 Jackass.

Just to reiterate, Cal is currently playing this game while missing:

2 starting Wide Receivers
2 starting O Lineman
1 starting Running Back

1 Starting edge defender
1 Starting Safety (the targeting)
1 Starting Corner Back

This feels like the Davis game to me. Putrid first half, we'll do enough in the second to win but everyone will still be majorly disappointed before we (hopefully) come out with fire and a better gameplan on the road next week. Still, if we don't get healthy on the OL and the guys we have don't improve then everyone will just attack and blitz the hell out of us and blow up our offensive gameplans.

Bloesch is an OL guy, if we don't see some growth there heading into week 4 then we're in for a long season where we *can* beat anyone on our schedule or we could lose to anyone and we end up dropping frustrating games and playing some irredeemable brand of football. If I had $5MM just laying around I swear I would spend it all on 5 OL for next year

Its also hard to find a rhythm with these refs

Yea, this just follows the trend of Cal playing down to their opponent.

Good programs invest on the Oline and Dline. I agree with what you are saying, and that's why the saying goes, "it starts in the trenches"

Plus we don't have a legitimate head coach. That's a helluva handicap.
