We are so lucky SDSU is putrid. Hope this a wake up call of a half.
Per the broadcast, we had 19 first half penalties. So on track to overtake second place.golden sloth said:
I did some internet sleuthing. Most penalties in a game occurred in 2019 when there was a pregame fight between Texas and Oklahoma thus tallying over 100 penalties before the game started.
Prior to that, the record was 36 in 1986. I tried to cross-reference the ESPN box score, but I think this game broke it, as its not available.
Wilcox just needs more time to get his own guys in there. Also, what else can you expect with a barometric pressure like this?CalConor said:
That was a truly horrible half of football. Borderline unwatchable.
Did you see the snap?BadNewsBear1 said:golden sloth said:
let's not hate on Coe for missing that. It was a 62 yarder
Except that it would've been short from 50

Did I just see a new Berkeley commercial?
I'll never cease to be amazed by how stupid some CAL fans are. It was a 62 yard attempt. It landed around 3 yards into the EZ. Arithmetic: do it.BadNewsBear1 said:golden sloth said:

I feel like the offense has had moments, and are close to putting it all together. They've had a few moments of stupidity. Dychess not falling forward, calling timeout after the first down, holding penalties.

If not for coming up JUST short on some 3rd down completions, the whole half might look different. It's been a weird, choppy game all around.
Yea, this just follows the trend of Cal playing down to their opponent.Bearly Clad said:
This feels like the Davis game to me. Putrid first half, we'll do enough in the second to win but everyone will still be majorly disappointed before we (hopefully) come out with fire and a better gameplan on the road next week. Still, if we don't get healthy on the OL and the guys we have don't improve then everyone will just attack and blitz the hell out of us and blow up our offensive gameplans.
Bloesch is an OL guy, if we don't see some growth there heading into week 4 then we're in for a long season where we *can* beat anyone on our schedule or we could lose to anyone and we end up dropping frustrating games and playing some irredeemable brand of football. If I had $5MM just laying around I swear I would spend it all on 5 OL for next year

Just to reiterate, Cal is currently playing this game while missing:
2 starting Wide Receivers
2 starting O Lineman
1 starting Running Back
1 Starting edge defender
1 Starting Safety (the targeting)
1 Starting Corner Back
They are also the hardest positions to project from high school.Wang24 said:
Good programs invest on the Oline and Dline. I agree with what you are saying, and that's why the saying goes, "it starts in the trenches"

Yea it doesn't really feel Cal is in danger of losing this game, just ugly to watch thoughBearly Clad said:

If we can't protect Mendoza vs. SDSU, how the **** are we going to protect him against real teams?
They got the penalties because they are putrid.calumnus said:falseintellect said:

If not for the penalties they would be beating us
