That was a bad spot, he started the slide after the 1st

It's where the ball is when you start the slide. Still probably a bad spot but not a good play by Mendoza
I feel they should coach QBs to dive forward when going for a first down. This sort of thing happens far too often in college football.

That's why Tua has another concussion. And that's why QBs are coached to slide feet first.

I'm not suggesting people slide head first into traffic, but there is no one around, fall head first.

Uluave and Buchanan, 11 tackles each.
Props to the Dline allowing that to happen.

I understand it's not the most original playcall, but your offensive line should get enough push to get a yard up the middle. The fact it failed multiple times is concerning.

My hopes are:

1. Cal establishes the run and have 200 yards of rushing (done mostly by committee).

2. The defense holds SDSU to under 17.

3. Cal stays healthy.

4. The fans have a great time and come out again.

Party at my house if this all comes to pass

So, where's the party?
well I'm at LAX flying to MSP and eventually driving to Iowa. If anyone's in Forest City Iowa tomorrow, i'll pick up some beers and we can celebrate

That's a little too far for me. Kudos to you for making it out to the game from Forest City.

If there is no traffic the QB would just take the extra step(s).
Always slide feet first for QBs unless it is some game winning touchdown.

I agree, but if you put all 11 players in the box, it's pretty obvious where you're going

I didn't mean that negatively. With this scheme, the d lines goal is occupy blockers allowing the middle linebackers free access to go nuts.

So far, how does Buchanan stack up against recent Bear stud LBs?

This doesnt really answer your question, but I thought Devonte Downs was the best linebacker in the Wilcox era. He just didn't have the production because he got injured early in the season and only had one season under Wilcox. He had a level of athleticism that Jackson, Weaver, and Kunaszyk simply didnt.

In-depth evaluation of TB.

https://www.thedraftnetwork.com/2024/07/18/teddye-buchanan-scouting-report-nfl-draft

The only comparable metric I can find vs Weaver is 40 yard dash time. TB apparently never went to any official type of NFL combine.

Weaver
40 yd 4.76

Buchanan
4.58 - 4.74

Nationally, it's only 3 games, but TB's #17 in tackles and tied with 16 others in sacks (#25), but a hair from being tied at #9.

Downs was amazing. But didn't he leave Cal before Wilcox was hired?

Alternatively, if you're in Tallahassee i can certainly guarantee you a beer.

Not sure when 'll be up to Cal... probably big game. I'd love to come up for Miami but going to the Auburn, FSU and Pitt games is already a pretty grueling schedule... for a 40 year old fan, anyway

FWIW, Hardy Nickerson - tackles:
- 141 in 1984
- 167 in 1985
- 132 in 1986

Downs was a Dykes' recruit and played 2014, 2015, 2016 and half of 2017 before a season ending injury. He was drafted by Minnesota.

Yeah, Wilcox took over in 2017 and was making him a star, but unfortunately Downs got injured in the 37 - 3 wipe out against a ranked Washington State team on Friday the 13th.

He was the Pac-12 defensive player of the week in 2 of his 6 games he completed that year.
