I love Jared but I'm really doubting at this point if he'll ever win the big one. Take away 14 points from his unforced errors and the Lions probably win.
Goff played bad, there is no way around that, but he at least shares the blame with the defense that couldn't stop Washington ever. 31 points should win you most games.

This is true and don't get me wrong, I'm not putting this all on him. The Lions D breaking down was a high risk possibility eventually and Ben Johnson has terrible situational playcalling awareness. But the issue is that getting to the SB is such a marginal thing, and the guy's window is closing hard.

Lions defense has been decimated most of the season, which put so much pressure on Goff and offense to carry the team. Pick 6 turned the direction of the game. No call on targeting Goff was inexcusable. Disappointed, but should be favored next year. Saying Goff can't win big games is unfair.

Lions blew a great path to the Super Bowl and are now going to lose the best coach on their staff. Ouch.

Well, 7 of those points were a pick 6, so count only 38 for the defense. He also had the bad INT to end the first half. He had another strip sack when he had two hands on the ball at the WAS 25. The Commanders defense did as poorly (or, worse) than the Detroit defense for the entire night, save 3 plays, giving up 521 yards of offense to the Lions, while Detroit gave up 481 to the Commanders. But those three plays were the difference in the game. You're not winning any games losing the turnover battle 5-0 and Goff was responsible for 4 of them. Defense didn't have any takeaways, but I'm putting the lion's share of the blame on Goff, pun intended.

Lions were kind of doing the Jimmy G game plan by the 3rd quarter (runs and safe short passes), which tells you what they thought of Goff's play in the first half. But at that point asking the defense to pitch a shutout was too much.

No, you are right. 38 points is totally normal for a defense to give up. The defense also deserves no blame for having 12 men on the field on a critical 4 and 2 within the 5. Its not their fault.

Again, the blame is about 50/50.

Anyways, I think Goff might actually benefit from Ben Johnson leaving.

I'm not saying that Ben Johnson isn't all he's cracked up to be.

But at some point, Goff has to get out of this cycle where nearly every person who works for him is extremely desirable.

To recap, Goff has worked with:

Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell
Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor
Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LeFleur

If Johnson is hired by the Raiders, Goff will have worked with 6 of the 32 NFL head coaches. That's about 19%. Quite a lot.

(I've told this story before: Zac Taylor was assistant wide receiver coach for the Rams in January 2018. In February 2019, he was head coach of the Bengals. He went from being so undesirable he couldn't land a position coaching job to being head coach in the span of 13 months all thanks to 1 year with Goff.)

Goff has also worked with Washington Huskies head coach Jedd Fisch, Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen -- who's interviewing for head coaching jobs and Shane Waldron, who was fired as Chicago Bears offensive coordinator two months ago.

A lot said about the Lions' defense and Cal/Lions QB Jared Goff in this thread.

Occam's Razor on Goff's performance: Anybody who has ever played a sport competitively knows even the greatest athletes have an occasional off-day. This is the simplest explanation for his bad game yesterday.

This has nothing to do with any imminent decline in his career, or any inherent inability to win "the Big Game".

He'll be back in the mix to win the Super Bowl next year ....

Would it be considered petty to wish hate on McVay/Stafford and desire them to step on their collective wursts?

*Asking for a friend, Big C.

*Do you think the gel in McVay's faux hawk froze under his beanie?

During the regular season only 2 teams scored more than 31 points against Detroit. This game they gave up 38. The 31 points should have won this game
Blame scale: Golf/Defense 30/70

I love Goff, and he is a great representative of Cal and seems like a fantastic human being.

That said, some people just are anti-clutch and he is one of them. Always has been. Even here, he did a ton for Cal and carried the team- but every time we got to a "big game" to take that next step... he'd flop.

His paycheck doesn't flop. Nothing else matters.

Nonsense. He suffered a concussion on that earlier pick-6 and somehow muscled through to make the game competitive. The Lion's D lost the game with minimal rush and insufficient containment on Daniels. 14 key injuries on D will do that to a team.

I'm sure it does, high-level athletes don't just live for their paychecks. Ironically, if it didn't matter to him, he might have performed better.

People who say Goff always flops in big games conveniently leave out all of the big games he has won in order to get to the bigger games.

Anyway, Jared showed some serious toughness returning to the game after that vicious cheap shot yesterday.

So Goff has worked with all 4 NFC North head coaches.

The narrative was that Goff sucked without McVay. Then he was good without McVay. So the narrative is that he was good because of Ben Johnson and the great roster.

We'll see what happens.

My favorite trio of gunslinging QBs tossed an aggregate 8 INT in their playoff games : Goff 3; Herbert 4; and Darnold 1.

NFL head coaches who've worked with Jared Goff:

Los Angeles Rams' Sean McVay
Cincinnati Bengals' Zac Taylor
Green Bay Packers' Matt LaFleur
Minnesota Vikings' Kevin O'Connell
Detroit Lions' Dan Campbell
Chicago Bears' Ben Johnson
Jacksonville Jaguars' Liam Coen

That's 22% of the head coaches in the NFL.

Is Goff the luckiest QB in the league working with all these head coach caliber coaches?

Very interesting.

Fugitive Family was filmed in St. Helena at a winery, the name of which I can't remember. At the Holiday Inn in Napa, where a lot of the cast and crew were staying, we were sitting at a table with Robin (who played a 17 year old in the movie). She was stunning. My buddy, also in the movie, asked her out but she wouldn't have any of it. Turned out she was 27 (I was 26, my buddy, 27).
