The Bay Area can't point at the Giants' recent championships and then shrug off LA's recent championships in other sports (Lakers > Warriors, Kings > Sharks) in that regard.

I specifically posted that to show how ridiculous you guys are. Socalbear was basically arguing that every la team was superior to every NorCal team. This is obviously false unless you get to use both standards at once.

How can the dodgers be better than the giants and in the same sentence say that the lakers are better than the warriors? Makes no sense.

You can't have it both ways. You can't say the only thing that matters is the future and then in the same sentence say the lakers are superior to the warriors because they have won more recent championships.


So I will concede future looks brighter for dodgers over giants. But using the same standard, don't you guys argue lakers over warriors.
Or kings over sharks. Or nobody over niners. The sports scene definitely looks brighter in Bay Area.

Both sides (and sometimes A's fans too) spew venom, framing their viewpoint in the best light possible (and framing the other side in the worst light possible). Rare is the case where one of the sides gives some credit to the other side, even though credit is due all over the place. It can be a fun but futile exercise. At times it gets really lame, dividing Cal brethren for no good reason. For instance Ducky that comment in this thread asking whether Cal fans have a problem with rooting for the Lakers because of what they stand for, was pretty brutal man. You have fans all over the map that go to Cal. We are one.

I mostly agree with some others, though. This thread should be given its last rites. Time to kill it.

The Lakers are in a bad spot right now. They have an aging roster, and Kobe Bryant, the guy who held them together for as long as he could, has suffered an injury that a player his age will find it difficult to come back from. If Kobe doesn't come back at full strength, it's rebuild time.

I don't really think the Warriors are championship caliber yet, but at the moment they are in a much better place than the Lakers (and the current ownership has shown some actual savvy for constructing a good team, something Warriors fans haven't seen in a long time).

Rumor has it the Lakers will go after Lebron and Melo next year. However, their current administration hasn't shown to have the professionalism and ability to make great things happen, so we will see.

I've read a lot of great things about the Warriors GM and the guy is a game changer. Looking forward to having another solid inter state rival because for decades the Clippers, Kings and Warriors have only shown light glimpses.

Have to give the W's new owners credit for stepping up. They're light years ahead of the Cohan years and have a young, entertaining and competitive team. I think they can make a decent playoff run and get close.

Lakers aren't going to be good again until after Kobe is gone. Right now he's taking up salary and the offense has to run through him, as well as the other old timers like Nash. Once he's gone, Lakers clean house and sign some big timers, like LBJ. The wild card in the deck is Jim Buss. If he actually controls the Lakers, could be trouble. The guy is an idiot. His sister however could run things, and has.

Jon Miller's a Hall of Fame broadcaster. A lot of people don't like Morgan but I thought he was a good counterpoint to Miller's cerebral approach. I really like listening to them.

I think it's been established that BowDown was pretty much the only one who thinks Jon Miller sucks. Personally, I think he is a good TV announcer but a GREAT radio announcer -- you have to hear him on the radio to really appreciate his talent.

I'm not a Jon Miller fan and it has nothing to do with the Giants. Seems like a decent guy, just never liked his voice. It's a little too smooth and massaged, like he talks to himself a lot because he likes the sound to the point of fluffiness. Similar to Joe Buck but not a nutsack like Buck.

Personal preference. Miller is a very good announcer. He's just so smooth it's like he's trying to sell me something when I just want to hear the game.

As for Scully, he has declined like any other 86 y.o. That said, the LA Times recently ran an article about his still apparent greatness. The gist of it: Vin's ability, willingness and understanding of the game to just STFU when the action on the field or the fans reactions add more to the story. That takes a ginormus pair of cojones and superior sense of the game because dead air is one of the big no-no's of broadcasting. Dead air to broadcasters is like being kicked in the nuts, suffocated and a heart attack all at the same time.

You hit the nail on the head on Miller. His "heeeee...struck him out..." is of course a signature thing and contrived. But yes, it's smooth and he's very good. I just hated hearing him with Morgan though. I felt like Morgan was talking down to us, teach us idiots what baseball is all about. That's not a great attribute in a commentator. I actually get a kick out of homer Hawk Harrelson. Love the "he gone" and "yuh-yuh-YES!!!" when the Chisox score. But it is also contrived and also annoying at the same time because of the homerism -- yet it kind of grows on you. He-gone!

One thing about Vin Scully and listening to Dodgers broadcasts, he never played the homer but I once heard the West Coast announcers never did - too many transplants from around the country. When I first heard a real homer play by play guys, I was a little stunned. First time I heard Phil Rizzo I thought, WTF...but I agree, if it's your team, why not it makes it better.

re: Joe Morgan, I always liked him. I understand why others don't.

Rizzutto was classic. Somebody published a book of his on air poetry and it was hilarious because all his digressions read like poetry. He also left early so he could beat traffic back to Jersey

The problem with Morgan is that he would be condescending, but then say things that (frankly) were pretty dumb and revealed his own ignorance. Particularly when it came to statistical analysis -- he would go on rants against the book Moneyball and the philosophies it supported . . . and then later admit that he hadn't actually read the book! Come on dude.

As for Harrelson -- well, some homerism is to be expected in local announcers. Vin Scully is the huge exception on this score, but if you listen very closely you can tell he does pull for the Dodgers. A guy like Harrelson goes way too far with it, to the point that he doesn't even call the game accurately. No one other than ChiSox fans can really stand to listen to a game called by him.

One of the things I like about the Giants' broadcast team is they keep homerism within reasonable bounds. They certainly make it obvious that they are rooting for the Gs, but not to the extent some other announcing teams do.

It always cracks me up to hear a clip of something like a game winning home run, as announced by the crew from the team that gave up the home run. Some announcers sound like they're reading a phone book or something as they say "There's a deep fly ball...it's gone...grand slam home run for Cabrera...the Tigers score 9 runs in the bottom of the 9th to win 12-11." At least Jon Miller et al. have a little excitement in their voices as they announce something good by the other team.

I thought baseball was at its peak with Scully calling the national game. I also liked Costas and Bob Uecker. Not a fan of Joe Buck or his equally curmudgeon sidekick.
