WTF -- in before this thread gets ugly. I'm surprised the article didn't mention that Dykes took a Cal team that was 1-11 in 2013 to 7-5 this year with bowl eligibility.

What Wilner said was true. If Cal has an extension on the table, and Dykes is not jumping at it, it must mean the terms are rather pedestrian, which to me is good news after all the negotiation fails we've had recently in football.

Might be best for all parties.

Are there any available air raid-style coaches we could pick up if Sonny bails? Maybe someone from ECU? That would ease the transition.

Wow. IF this is true and it is publically known that Sonny is interviewing how does one come back after that?

He loves it in Berkeley, other threads have told us that, but Missouri is his dream job

Good luck to Dykes, it would be a great hire for Missouri. I hope Cal Admin is busy researching a new head coach.

Tediford's agent was really good at this stuff too - why Tedford extension was a costly disaster.

It's only one state over from Texas.

Well "hot" coaches are interviewed all the time, like pretty much the entire WAC head coaching fraternity after the 2012 season. But it seems kind of messed up in this situation. It's like Sonny should be the one grateful for a Cal extension, after barely making it to 7-5 (very impressive win v. ASU, but 0-12 and 0-5 in the gaunlet + Furd). It's more troubling for our coach to be doing this, in this situation. Or am I reading this all wrong? Is this just business and no big deal (and this could all be moot if he signs the extension)?

Sunny deserves an extension! If he leaves I hope all you haters will be happy! Can't wait for you guys to start bashing Williams for his choice of the next coach!

Can't imagine Sonny Dykes landing the Missouri job. I think his agent is doing a good job keeping his name in the papers and establishing him as a "candidate" at other places.

Is this in bad form though or is this completely acceptable as normal "free agency" discussions like in baseball?

Well if he wants to live in that hole instead of the Bay Area all you can say is WHOA NELLIE!

As long as the AD is informed beforehand, since we have not extended him yet this is probably helpful for all parties since it will gauge Dyke's market value and we can have another perspective involved in his contract negotiations. Also the Missouri message boards do not believe Dykes is a serious candidate since they know as well his contract is being negotiated.

remember Sonny's agent was making inquiries last off season too. while there may indeed be substance to this, ESPECIALLY when you are working an extension this is not too uncommon

Losing Snyder to ASU was a disaster, Losing Sonny to Mizzou would be OK for both sides. Far better Mizzou than Houston. Bielema to Arkansas and Anderson to OSU were bigger FUs to Barry Alvarez and Wisconsin.

This is his agent trying to create leverage as they negotiate the extension. Can't imagine Sonny Dykes landing the Missouri job, not with his record. I do think CSD's agent is doing a good job keeping his client's name in the papers and establishing him as a "candidate" at other places, in an attempt to turn up the heat.

This is the business. Funny story I heard last night... Saturday evening Clay Helton's agent told Pat Haden that Memphis had offered Helton their head coaching job and they needed an answer by Sunday noon. Haden got nervous and that's when they pulled the trigger on a deal.

Think about that for a second. SC beat out Memphis for their head coach.

That would make sense as to the timing and ultimately, the decision.

He beat some good teams this year but 5-2 is not what SC aspires to, especially in a season they came in ranked top ten.

It's a tough racket. Mostly, you're either moving up or out. I don't blame him for gauging his market value and if he could land an SEC job after this gig, more power to him as I don't think that's coming around again

His overall record is 13-23, Missouri fans will be pissed if that is the best hire that could get.

I just question what programs are going to be impressed with his performance here at Cal. 7-5 after 3 years is not hot commodity territory. Add that to the defensive woes he has coached over the last 6 years and I just don't see him getting offers elsewhere. At least not this year.

I don't mind him doing it now, but I did have a problem with him doing it when we only had 5 wins and we were struggling to get to the 6th win

First: Accomplish something.

Then: Complain or seek new employment via the media.

His 7-5 record makes him look really sexy.

I went from wanting Dykes gone (first half of ASUC game) to really appreciating the job he's done and defending his 0-12 record (after the ASU game) to feeling indifferent (after reading Wilner's sobering article).

This is better than if nobody wanted our coach.

The season we had generated an extension, just likely a lukewarm one. He should vet all his options before signing.

All in the game man, all in the game.

hey look, Wilner's actually got the finger on the pulse for once....

Quote:

"My sense is that Cal fans simply waiting for him to win a game that matters to them. He's 0-12 vs Stanford/Ore/USC/UCLA"

"Also, narrative that Dykes has gone from 1 to 5 to 7 wins misleading: Bears had better talent than 1-11 '13."

I view this news as such:
Coach knows that his team is going to suck next year after Goff and all those WR's are gone. Tough to negotiate a new deal, let alone have your resume looking good, after a 3-8 season. Coach probably reasons: I'd better get while the getting is good.

Agreed they were in the SEC championship game in 2014 and now you hire a guy who's fighting for a Peanut Bowl slot
