I'm being entertained so I'm not really interested in badmouthing something fun that shouldn't be taken too seriously.
However, during the funeral, they missed a great opportunity for Dany to climb right onto the funeral pyre and emerge from the flames only to climb onto a dragon and fly around reminding everybody, especially Sansa, of who the Queen is.

Also a prime time for some body double nudies for ratings.
The Targaryenization of Jon Snow is a sad joke. My bonded direwolf? - ah piss off old dog, you'll be happier in the cold, I'm headed for the summer lands.
Agree - Arya and Brienne boning down is just silly and coarse. The Gendry proposal was a decent gag though.
I can't blame them though, good endings are hard. Really really hard.

The question is not whether the show is still entertaining. I believe that even a really awful writer could still make something entertaining
I don't. There are a LOT of examples of great source material that didn't result in anything nearly as entertaining as GoT.
I'm not talking about adapting something from the source material. That's incredibly difficult.
I'm just talking about season 8, not season 1.
When writing for season 8, all the world building has already been done, the characters have already been pretty fleshed out, and you have a legion of fans that have already completely bought in. What I'm saying, at that point, its not hard to make something entertaining. Hell I was entertained by the 3rd matrix movie, godfather 3 and back to the future 3. But a lot of that entertainment value was built on the backs of the previous movies.
I was not very entertained by the third Matrix movie, so not sure I'm buying your premise here. That's a great example of creators blowing it despite having the audience in their hands thanks to previous work.
The premise of the third Matrix movie SHOULD have been Neo's eventual discovery that the "real" universe operates just like the Matrix, and the powers he developed in the Matrix, work outside of the Matrix, allowing him to destroy the computers and Christlike, lead humanity to freedom.
Just looked on TV Guide. Here's the official HBO description for Sunday's episode: "Before Cersei's forces take on the Khaleesi, she must first contend with the romantic powers of the Caleesi."
I'm still enjoying the show warts and all. That last scene with the puny little vulnerable sans dragon army out in the open demanding Cersie and her huge army, navy etc. lay down their arms, and Cersei allowing them to go away had my wife and I in stitches (until Danny's personal assistance and hair consultant's head rolled) . Even our dog, who dreams of being an ass kicking dire wolf in his next life, was laughing.
I suspect the Jon/Danny conflict is a gimmick to mislead us.
In any event, Sunday still can't happen soon enough.
She's restrained for the better part of 7 seasons, it has led to her best friends and confidants killed. She listened to Tyrion to not kill Varys, it's backfired. She has not gotten ROI on her mercy and compassion.
She is completely justified blasting King's Landing's Queen's quarters with fire, and was justified in doing so before last episode. Instead, almost all her allies and her baby dragons are dead because she restrained.
As Olenna Tyrell (the best character in the show IMO) said, "The Lord of Westeros are sheep. Are you a sheep? No. You're a Dragon. Be a Dragon."
Just incinerate King's Landing already. Sad she's going to be painted as the antagonist for doing so.
LOL season 8 so far. These characters are unrecognizable. They are merely vehicles for moving this plot to its writers end.
Arya stakes her life on revenge, get's to the Red Keep, Sandor tells her she should stop and go back, she says "good point bro, I'm outta here!"
Dany needlessly burning down the entire city including the innocent civilians after the army surrenders is not plausible. But hey, Dany's character needs to serve the plot's ending.
Dragon destroys Iron Fleet and castle arrows in about 90 seconds after the fleet alone out maneuvering 2 dragons last week.
Cersei, though always less smart than she thinks, is mesmerized looking out into the city being destroyed like some kind of paralyzed ****** like she's watching 4th of July fireworks. Even she's not that dumb. Then she pleads for her life with Jamie.
Congrats to Drogon and Dany on their newfound aerial evasive skills and offensive efficiency. Much improved from two weeks ago. Got coached up nicely since Enron and the boys took down Rhaegal with ease.
More importantly, where in the world have all these Dothraki and Unsullied been??? Didn't almost all of them get wiped out in the Battle of Winterfell? And where were they last week at the big victory fiesta and funeral pyre burning? Didn't get an invite? Maybe still in the process of being magically cloned in time for the big battle in King's Landing? I'm confused.

Like you read my mind. I kept asking why is everyone so sure Dany & company are going to win and win big? Who knew central casting gave her more Unsulled and discovered a bunch of Dothraki extras? Add you don't want to screw with the person who does a woman's hair. All of a sudden even handed Dany morphs into Mad Dany from where? BTW, suggest Baldwin take notes on how to develop an offense so quickly.
I usually roll with the GOT punches but I'm pretty disgusted that this is what it comes down to after all these years and I have no idea where they can go to wrap this up in even a slightly satisfactory way next week.
Martin referred to the ending as bittersweet. I get the bitter part but where's the sweet? Seems like it's a little packet of stevia in a cup of vinegar.
I'm pretty certain this what Martin had in mind for the end game, as I don't think Benioff and Weiss would concoct this on their own.
And next week, no spoilers here before 90% of the board has even started watching the episode.

Yeah seriously. This is a West Coast message board for a west coast football team. Posting that stuff before the show has even aired on the West Coast is super not cool. Makes me want to take my dragon and torch someone's citadel

Agreed. Honestly, if you go back and look at all of Dany's behavior throughout the series this action isn't super surprising. It's just that all of that was framed differently, with her as the liberator. I suspect GRRM always wanted to make the point that one person's liberator is another person's invader.
So I don't really have a problem with any of the specific plot developments per se. I suspect this is mostly what Martin had planned out from the beginning. I think the big problem people are having is with the pace. There was enough plot in the last three episodes that used to take up a whole season, or maybe even two. The opportunity for the kind of slow-burn subtle character-building the show used to do is lost.
But maybe this was always going to happen. I don't think all of these actors wanted to stay under contract for 4 or 5 more seasons. You can take forever to write books, but making TV shows means a lot of people need to be scheduled to work on it.

Oh spare me your whining. Anyone who ventures into a Game of Thrones thread on a Sunday after 6 deserves to have the plot spoiled. No one is making you click on the thread.

Was going to post this. Many West Coasters (and Australians and British people) can watch at 6 pm PT. But if you're unable to watch, it really is easy to avoid Twitter and the internet.
Every week at 6 pm, I just turn off my email and notifications, and go outside, go shopping or whatever and wait till it's dark. Then I start watching at 9:30 pm. I've never been spoiled because I don't venture on the internet. (And people outside here in Los Angeles aren't yelling GoT spoilers on the street.)-
GoT, at this point, is a massive event. It's like being online during an NFL playoff game and expecting not to be spoiled.
Two things have shaped me on HBO and spoilers:
1. In fall 2004, I decided to watch the Survivor finale (this was before I had a DVR) before watching that night's The Wire episode. This was before The Wire was really massive -- before The Wire fanatic Bill Simmons even watched a single episode. After watching the three-hour Survivor finale, I went to NYTimes.com and saw a picture of Idris Elba, this headline and this lede sentence:
In the early seasons of Game of Thrones, people wouldn't usually tweet during the episode. They would tweet after while actually watching what was going on. So I would wait till 7 pm to log off. Well, the Red Wedding episode, it turns out, was a short episode, and I had no idea it was coming.
Unfortunately, I saw this tweeted from Buzzfeed at 6:54 pm. when I watched the episode and it was coming toward the end and everybody was happy, I knew something bad was going to happen. So I didn't get the same sense of shock that people caught candidly watching the Red Wedding on all those YouTube videos felt. And I've always been ticked off about that.
Don't know what you posted Yogi but since you are replying to me I'll just remind you I blocked you long ago. You are clearly just a troll who does nothing but talk crap about the program and other posters. You may have once said something positive about Cal but if so I never saw it. Been great having you gone.

I've read a lot of this sentiment tonight -- that we shouldn't be surprised by Mad Dany because she's been unveiling this kind of behavior all series
She's been merciless quite a bit over 7 seasons -- towards rulers and opposers of her reign, not innocents. The writers have taken great pains to show she is quite the opposite in that regard. This isn't a matter of her good/evil being dependent on whether she's seen as a liberator or a conqueror.
Dany burning down the Red Keep is perfectly within the parameters of her character thus far (and perfectly ethical, too). Burning down hundreds of thousands of innocents after their ruler's army surrendered is merely plot service.
I'm pretty certain this what Martin had in mind for the end game, as I don't think Benioff and Weiss would concoct this on their own.

Nah. I think one of two things is happening. Either the showrunners are largely deciding the ending on their own without much guidance or Martin doesn't know how to stay consistent to his own writing. Supposedly, his story is very much influenced by the Lord of the Rings. Well, in the Lord of the Rings, Aragorn doesn't suddenly become the Mad King when he comes into power. Gandalf doesn't suddenly become an idiot. All of the characters follow a storyline that resolves into endings that make sense for the characters given what we know of their motivations, personality, and past actions.
I don't have an issue with Daenerys did per se. Aegon the Conqueror conquered some of the seven Kingdoms the same way. Take your dragon into the city and set everything on fire. Yet no one outside of Dorne would say he was a mad king or a bad king. Cersei refused to surrender. It's not her fault that the people of King's Landing are so stupid as to not think "Maybe we'd be better off away from the town where all the fighting is going to take place." Other kings, faced with an adversary who refused to bend the knee and had dragons all did the same thing. They used them, as any sane person would who had a dragon at their disposal. The issue here is that they decided to make her decide to set fire to everything anyway after her sellswords dropped their weapons, which Aegon the Conqueror would not have done. This is out of character given what Daenerys' character has been established to be by the rest of the story. Use your dragon - fine. Use it when you don't have to, not fine.
Jaime's character's arc has been utterly worthless. His story in the books was clearly a story of redemption. In the show? What the hell is his purpose? At times he just does whatever Cersei tells him to do. Other times, he makes his own decisions? His journey to Winterfell? Pointless. Bedding Brienne? Pointless. Returning to King's Landing to return to Cersei? If he's so devoted to her, why did he ever leave? Ultimately, they showed that they never really cared for his story at all.
As for Cersei, presumably she's dead now (the way this show goes, I don't assume they're dead until I see it happen). They ignored the thing with the valonquar in the show, but they still did this:
Well, the debt ain't paid.
As for Tyrion, his whole story has been bungled since they ran out of source material for him. He represents someone who survives by his wits despite having the respect of almost no one. And now he's headed for a likely death at the hand of his queen, which makes zero sense other than that they are so bent on this unearned Mad Queen ending.
Same goes for Varys. Varys is a survivor. The notion that he would die because he's openly asking Jon Targaryen to take the throne because reluctant rulers are the best (ignoring the fact that the last guy who didn't want to be king, Robert, sucked at it) is ridiculous. Varys' machinations are never done in the open.
For some people, it's sufficient to get a dragon flying around shooting fire or have a big zombie attack that you can't see on screen and that makes a great story. i think a story only becomes great when the arc of the story of the hero (or even the anti-hero) ends satisfactorily. That ain't gonna happen here. They're trying to make square pegs fit into round holes to suit them.
