I saw another stat, I think it was also on ESPN, that said Cal went 10 quarters of play against Udub without scoring an offensive TD (but scored two defensive TDs in that span). And of course Cal's record against UW in that span is 2-1.

I always tell people don't post in game threads because you're going to look stupid in retrospect. I'm not smart enough to take my own advice :-)

We left the bar viewing party around 10:00 Denver time, got home, waited, read Twitter, said "what? really, they're going to play that late" - went to the Dish DVR to record and add time - and said "wth, I'll set the next event (a baseball game) to record as well - so I did capture the whole game.

And, I may have slept through parts of the first half - but was awake from early in the second half.

To the person asking about the QB dropping the ball at the goal line, I think you are referring to Pat Barnes against WSU in Pullman.

But, what a win! I don't care what the strategy was on the 2d down centering run. Because none of it really matters when there is a big W. I don't care what Garbers' stats were - because none of it really matters when there is a big W. (Ok, that's not really true)

Reading that HH thread reminded me of one funny thing about being a Cal fan. Fans of the top teams are devastated when they lose to Cal. They can't comprehend losing to trash Cal and its horrible offense. The odd thing about Udub fans is that they should be used to it by now. Cal is 3-2 in their last 5 games against UW.

I get the hate. It's the free pass for having basically the same awful offense that we once had as a defense. That's all.
Precisely
In addition to the much better record, Wilcox's defense is way better than Dykes' offense, which actually wasn't very good either when you look at more advanced stats.

But accoring to the broadcasters last night Cal has gone through a huge drought in Seattle, our last win coming waaaaaaaay back in 2015... you know, we had a ONE GAME LOSING STREAK in Seattle.

(yes, these are the kind of things that drive me nuts).

Totally. USC's fanbase had a meltdown over losing to us last year, even though they weren't, you know, all that good.

The UW response was hilarious too. If we beat furd, expect a snobbier (but just as satisfying) meltdown.

Conference road win against a ranked opponent, traditional rivalry. It doesn't get much better than this...and Cal did it Pac-12 After Dark after a huge weather delay...just for style points.

Yeah, they kept making the point that it was so long ago some old dude named Goff was our QB.

We lost this game in every aspect...offense, defense, special teams, coaching, culture, concessions. EVERYTHING.

Sort of like our offense. But I'll take a running game and a QB that doesn't turn the ball over with our defense. To quote Mike Singletary, "I like this kinda party".

I don't like the implication.

It took a near miracle 49 yard kick for the Huskies to take a temporary lead. We had the lead going into the 4th. We had the lead for 14 of the last 16 minutes.

This is why I always say in-game threads are moments in time, not actual thoughts. Posting a new thread to **** on a player or unit can end up stupid, but emotional reactions to plays is the only reason sport exists.

Game threads are a small record of the feeling of the game, like a play-by-play of why the game was great.

No one should be embarrassed.

Except the guy who said Baldwin was as bad as Buh. ;-)

I agree. Some posters have complained about the call. I thought it was a good call and unexpected. But it was a terrible pass by Garbers. Well over everyone's head.

Very true, except maybe for Goff's last year. And they were never that good against the top of the conference.

Would have hit it from 55. That was a kick

I know that the announcers said that but I Disagree.
It had the height. But it hit the post meaning it was moving to the right. If the kick were from 55 it would have Bowen wide right or hit the post and bounced out.

Some interesting game stats. https://calbears.com/documents/2019/9/8//calwash.pdf

UW won the Time of possession battle, 32-27. They held the ball for 12/15 minutes in the 4th. We held it for 10/15 in the second. I don't recall either quarter being particularly successful scoring-wise for the team that held the ball the most.

UW had more offensive snaps, 76-56. 56 seems like a really low number for a winning team. I would think it usually means we had a lot of 1- or 2-play explosive TD drives but we all know that didn't happen. 76 is a middling number, I think. Given our lack of depth in the front 7, their up tempo strategy seemed to me to be a solid one, but 76 is not a big number for an up-tempo offense. Our D, especially Weaver, seemed stronger in the 4th than earlier on. 76 snaps is not enough to tire us out too badly, I guess, especially in the cool night air of Seattle, WA.

We won with 111 passing yards! Which means we didn't pass 100 until that last drive. When was the last time we won with so few? I would agree with those who say that we are lucky to win with such an unbalanced offensive performance. That is not going to cut it most of the time in our conference. Everything else, especially turnover margin, fell into place for us and allowed us to succeed in spite of our passing game.

Zero fumbles, zero interceptions. Much better than last week!

Penalties were about even, six each for about 60 yards. I seem to recall the announcer saying Cal had received its 5th penalty in the first half, meaning we had zero or one penalty in the second half.

Garbers had 13 rushes. Three were sacks. I only recall 1 that was a designed QB run. Meaning he scrambled on pass plays about 8-9 times. HIs scrambling was pretty effective. Taking out the three sacks he ran for something like 10 rushes for 74 yards. The run to pass play ratio was 38:18 but if you account for the sacks and scrambles as called-pass plays the ratio was more like 26:30 run to pass. So the play calling was pretty balanced and even favored the pass a bit although the stats on their face seem to indicate that we are very run-heavy. It's being skewed by all the scrambling Chase does. Also, the net yardage on called pass plays (iow, adding in Chase's scrambling yards and subtracting his sack yards) was probably about the same as the net yardage on called run plays, 50/50 or thereabouts.

There is a great site cfbstats.com that updates every Sunday morning. They use the same stats that are available to the College Football Playoff judges and the way its set up you can look at national and conference level as well as individual teams.

So I decided to look at Pac-12 Passing offense after 2 games. Now this is skewed quite a bit by quality of opponent and such, but it was revealing.

Here are the bullet points.

1) in yards per game Cal ranks #11 in the conference with just 174.5 yards passing per game. Utah is last at 160 YPG, Cal trails #10 UCLA by 3 yards (177.5 YPG)

2) Cal is also #11 in passing attempts over 2 games with just 46 passing attempts. Utah is #12 with just 35 passing attempts. conference leading WSU has 91 passing attempts after 2 games (twice Cal's)

3) Cal is actually #10 in completion percentage with 58.7% of all passes completed. UCLA (52.5), and Oregon State (50.0%) are lower. ASU is #9 at 62.7%

4) in Yards per pass attempt Cal is #9 at 7.6. #10 Stanfurd (6.7) #11 UCLA (5.8). UW is .2 ahead of Cal at 7.8 yards per attempt.

5) Based on QBR, Cal is #9 in the conference at 132.43. UW is #8 at 149.84. Furd #10 at 127.26

Obviously this is a small sample and I expect this to change quite a bit over the season, but it suggests that Cal's offense has improved considerably and especially based on having to face UW in week #2, Cal is likely looking at having an average passing attack.

Its not perfect, and could be a ton better, but we aren't the worst offense in the conference.

That first post totally proves the point I made last night. This guy's sick of Husky football, after, you know, winning the Conference last year? Such hardship. Poor babies!

Jesus, what do you have to do to enjoy football? The entitlement of that fan base knows no bounds. Let them go on a league championship drought HALF as long as ours and they won't have a single fan in that stadium!
You're entitled to your wrong opinion!
