Is this the greatest Pac-12 tournament run ever? In terms of beating our seeds it's got to be. Last time we had four teams in the Sweet 16 was 1997, I think, and then only two made the Elite 8.
UPDATE: 2001 also had three Pac-10 teams in the Elite 8, and the furthest advancement was Arizona making it to the Final, where they lost to Duke.

However, that year the teams that advanced were a 1 seed (Furd), a 2 seed (Zona), and a 6 seed (USC). So two of those were expected to be there anyway. This year, based on seeds, is a massive overperformance: a 6, an 11, and a 12 have advanced to this stage.

The basketball team is cool. It is strictly a football school. Just like at Cal, the games are poorly attended and the fans tend to be knowledgeable. The coach, players and fans are decent people. I'm all in for USC, UCLA and Oregon State. I loathe Oregon, Arizona and Colorado (and Furd, but only when we play them).

They are also rebounding and shooting the ball, none of the things the Beavs are doing right now.

Rather have them win anything over the bear runts (except for men's water polo).

The key stat is amount of shots taken. Houston has taken 14 more shots than Beavs. The shooting percentages from the field and the arc are the same. Houston is shooting better from the line and getting more boards. Beavs have 5 more turnovers.

I didn't see the game, but heard Thompson fell down in the last minute while bringing the ball up court

anyone see what happened?

was he on the big center court sticker (which players don't like because they can slip/fall because of it)

Not in the backcourt. He was driving into the lane, turned to the rim to start a layup, but slipped and lost the ball.

On the replay I thought I saw him trip over the lower part of the defender's leg.....which he ran into.

Conner has played 4 minutes in the first round game, going 0-1, with zero rebounds, assists, blocks

He hasn't played since

but interesting, while I was looking at his stats, I noticed former Cal recruit, Vance Jackson

His minutes have dropped from 27 minutes/game for his first 3 years (averaging 11 points), to 11 minutes this year as a senior (averaging 3 points)

To win this game, Arkansas needs to put Vanover in with instructions to start arcading 3 point attempts.

I haven't been following. What's the deal with Vanover lately? He started a number of games for the Razorbacks this season and averaged about 16 minutes per game. Now he's glued to the bench. Musselman decided to go with a different style of game? Vanover's nursing an injury? He tried the new-hair-every-week thing and Coach wasn't amused?

Not everyone here was as enamored of Vanover as I was, but I sure wish he was still with us.

Vanover would certainly not be glued to our bench. I also was sorry to see him go.

Congrats to the Beavs on a great run. Too many empty trips and too few rebounds doomed them down the stretch. Nonetheless, their comeback from 17 down was inspiring.

He got recruited over and the coach does not give PT based on seniority, he plays the best player. One reason they made it this far.

Huge kudos to the Beavers. It was fun to see them come together to make such a thrilling run. It's amazing how close they came to cutting down the regional nets and going to the Final Four, especially considering they played poorly that last game. Their poor rebounding and poor free throw shooting in the Houston game did them in, but what a fun ride! I really like that kind of team: no obvious nba players, but lots of quality, veteran college players. Also nice to see their patience with Tinkle pay off (at least, for this moment).

We are already seeing references to Houston's "Phi Slama Jama" teams. Wow, that was a time, wasn't it? Talk about a sports writer coining a lasting phrase!

Apparently, the phrase originated with a Houston Post sportswriter named Thomas Bonk, but for me, it all happened when I opened my Sports Illustrated and started reading the Curry Kirkpatrick(?) story, "Meet the Big Brothers of Phi Slama Jama... Clyde Drexler... Larry Micheaux... Benny Anders... " (can't remember if Akeem Olajuwon or Michael Young were mentioned at the top of the article)

March Madness was the greatest back then. Used to dream of Cal being a part of it.

Conor's decision-making here was bad. Passed up 25 mpg and Berkeley degree for bench splinters. He doesn't really fit the system Muss is installing at Arky, either, so it's not looking like next year will be any better.

Agreed. To be clear, I was talking about Vance Jackson. Was Connor's move to Arky to be closer to family or family to see his games? Because if it was the later seeing him sit on the bench cannot be what he had in mind.

Also, for those who blame prior coaches for lack of talent, this is an example of a new coach making an impact: either they win with the guys they inherit or previous starters get passed over by the better talent the new coach brings in.

Wayne Tinkle versus Mark Fox.
That is unfair, just another chance to bash the current Cal coach.

Wayne Tinkle is a good coach, but it took him 7 years to have this good team at Oregon State. He still hasn't had a 20 win season at OSU. And much of his success, maybe even allowing him to hold his job was he brought along his son, who was arguably his best player for 4 seasons. The year that Tres Tinkle was hurt, and played only 6 games, Wayne Tinkle's OSU team went 5-27, right down there with Fox's season this year and both Wyking Jones' seasons in terms of failure. Unfortunately, Fox did not bring a son of Tres Tinkle's caliber with him to Cal.

It takes time to build a winner at schools like OSU and Cal. Both schools had great basketball success in the past, and both have suffered a loss of basketball reputation over time. It is hard to recruit to either school, and hard to find the money to pay a proven coach. It took Larry Kristowiak four years to have a good team, a 20-win team at Utah. It just takes time.

It is completely fair. Tinkle did not build a great program at OSU. He is just a good coach who puts his team in a position to have success if they get a few breaks. Similar to Mike M., Thad Boyle, Kyle Smith and Larry K.. The formula is you hire a coach who is good at Xs and Os and player development. Every so often, the planets will align and you will have success. It is no coincidence that the best Cal coach of my lifetime is the only one to win a conference championship in my lifetime.

When Monty came Cal looked good right away. It was night and day compared to Braun, who was incompetent like Fox. Every Tinkle team plays at or above their talent. Fox's team looked like crap last year and this year. And they will next year and every year until he is fired. I am looking forward to that day.
You lose all credibility when you state that Ben Braun was incompetent. Ben Braun is the second most winning coach in Cal history. His 219 wins at Cal are second only to Nibs Price, who had 453. His winning percentage was .587, ranking him 6th among the 13 coaches Cal has had in my lifetime. I would describe Braun as an above average coach. I believe he was a better coach than Todd Bozeman or Cuonzo Martin, both of whom had better a better winning percentage than Braun. Visually, Braun's offense stalled at times with too much perimeter dribbling, but they often ran recognizable set plays, much more often than did several coaches at Cal, like Padgett, Campanelli, Bozeman, Martin, Jones or Fox. Braun's defense had some holes, but it was average or above, IMO. A coach is incompetent when his teams can't compete, and he has losing record after losing record. And a coach is incompetent when his teams don't look good, or look confused, and Ben's teams seldom looked that bad. I think he won most of the games Cal should have won, and lost the ones he shouldn't have won. He was not creative like Newell or Montgomery, who often beat the teams they were not supposed to beat, just by outsmarting them. But they are Hall of Fame caliber coaches, and Ben Braun was not that. He was good, and I suspect a lot of Cal fans would take him right now, in a heartbeat. I would, because I think he would bring us back to respectability, just like he did years ago when he was hired to revamp the Cal program which had lost all respect by hiring a coach who would cheat to win, and got caught, putting Cal on NCAA probation. If Braun did nothing else, he saved the Cal basketball program, continued with some good recruiting, and some pretty good coaching to produce several winning years, all of it squeaky clean, never breaking NCAA rules. You don't accomplish that if you are incompetent. His winning percentage was well above .500, which I would define as average, so in my book, he was an above average coach.

I thought USC would be more competitive vs Zags, but Zags proved they are the best team in college basketball as they dismantled another good team

I don't give ucla much chance against Michigan

I'm not surprised ucla is in the elite 8, as I think they have a top coach.

I am surprised that Cronin's defense-minded, slow it down style is successful at UCLA, in the same way I was skeptical that Harrick would be a good match at UCLA (he proved me wrong when they got to 3 Final Fours
