It sounds like attendance and the game experience is as sad as the NIT game against Cal State Bakersfield, you know, the game where Cuonzo caught a cab to the airport with 5 minutes left in the game, leaving behind broken hearts, Ivan Rabb's draft status in ruins, a basketball program in shambles and 4 cases of empty water bottles.
*I will, however, continue to buy season tickets in light of the fact that my total tuition cost for a 4 year education at Cal was less than $3000.

You are comparing Fox's 0-11 to Cuonzo's 21-13 with an NIT loss to the 25-10 (12-2) WAC Champion (#3 defense in the country that year)?

Also, I'm pretty sure Charlie Moore, who was probably our best player that year, didn't play in the game, so we weren't near full strength.
What a coward. I would expect better from a West Point alumnus.Quote:
Initially, Knowlton indicated he preferred to provide his answers via email, so he was provided our questions in advance on topics he was willing to discuss. Knowlton eventually volunteered to talk on the phone.
Because he had a good feel about him.....smhdiva1 said:
How does Knowlton expect a coach with zero recruiting chops to succeed?
Yeah my bad. So many things to remember, so many easy fixes they just won't do. Thanks for adding.HoopDreams said:
agree that quote is amazingly horrible
but you left off the worst thing they did to kill Haas. Ruined the student sideline seats for a money grab (which failed miserably by the way)
"[Attendance is] a concern. The success of the team helps, but way more important than that is all the other things we have to do as a department to make the fan experience special."
Maybe he consulted with the same firm that did the search for Mark Fox.socaltownie said:
Upon reflectiion I am not sure he failed the interview. Probably bad to even agree to it. What he said pisses off the most diehard fans. But if he goes further than he fuels the story that Fox is a deadman walking (which we all know he is). Lose - lose.
This is not to defend JK. He really is horrible. But I would have advised against doing the interview.
Yeah I have no idea what the purpose of it was either. Honestly I assume it was just to appease Farudo and keep him at bay, not that any reporter ever asks any real questions or does any real investigative work with regard to Cal athletics. I have no doubt there are real skeletons in the closet if anyone cared to do the work to look. Just look what Goggles uncovered about the contract terms with a few simple CPRA requests.socaltownie said:

I kind of agree. The interview doesn't bother me. It was a lot of AD speak meaning nothing. No AD is going to throw the coach under the bus. At that point, you might as well fire him. I would also point out that if you really read it, he basically gave a glorified "no comment" to whether a mid season firing could be positive.socaltownie said:

That is a man who on the one hand is not going to throw the coach under the bus until he is ready to, but on the other is not committing to seeing things through to the end of the season. More than I'd have thought we'd get. People should be happy with the answer.Quote:
I'm not saying I do see an upside or I don't see an upside. All I'm saying is I'm working with Mark, working with the program and giving them a chance to get a couple of these players back and to get that opportunity to put some wins under their belt.
I'm going to parse words here, but I think it is important parsing. Most people would say "I want to keep climibing until we reach the top". Because, there is only one top. He said "until we think maybe it's the top". In other words, I don't want to put a ceiling on this now. I want to keep getting better until we hit our ceiling. Until we get to a point and we look around and say "yeah, I think maybe this is as good as it gets for us". Whether it was intentional or Freudian, that was a major hedge and a clear indication that he did not see the actual top as being in the cards.Quote:
I don't want to put a ceiling on what we can achieve. I really don't," Fox said on that Monday morning. "I want to get better right now. I want to get better next next year. I want to keep climbing until we think maybe it's the top.
Yeah - I am so done with Fox I don't care anymore.BearlyCareAnymore said:I kind of agree. The interview doesn't bother me. It was a lot of AD speak meaning nothing. What I'm upset with is not the interview, but everything that has gotten us here. Eyes on the prize.
But if we want to talk about failed quotes, I'd go with this from Mark Fox at his first press conference (that was repeated in the article):I'm going to parse words here, but I think it is important parsing. Most people would say "I want to keep climibing until we reach the top". Because, there is only one top. He said "until we think maybe it's the top". They scheduled a t shirt give away during finals week and no students came.
For at least the past 15 years, there has been a basketball game the Friday before Big Game. Typically it has been a women's game, but that doesn't change that stat.calumnus said:oskidunker said:

They scheduled a basketball game on a Friday night at the same time as the Big Game Bonfire Rally. Not before, at the same time. Students, the band, cheerleaders (we finally had them) had to choose.
That is just emblematic of an athletic department that is grossly incompetent and devoid of people who have any knowledge of Cal traditions.
Yes, they allowed non students to take the shirts but most left them be cause they were so small and cheap. Why do his on finals week?…RayofLight said:For at least the past 15 years, there has been a basketball game the Friday before Big Game. Also for the record, the Band usually splits into 4 that night. 2 would deal with parties and events throughout the Bay Area (one set for the East Bay, one for the Peninsula), one would go to the game, and the last and largest group, the entire freshman cohort with some older members, was tasked with going to Bonfire and covering any other campus events.
If we're going to complain, let's not start acting like some of these things aren't new.
That said, the shirt giveaway was also a disaster because of the size - 90% of them were Smalls and the other 10% were Mediums. They didn't even get a reasonable size for a majority of the student body.
