Ugh. "Won't make excuses," then does. O-11 is "disappointing"? Really? Oh, shucks, Has bought into the injury excuse. His identification with Fox ("we") is troubling, it indicates likely no change mid-season.

At least this time he acknowledged basketball is a revenue sport.

"Mark's not making excuses." Love it.

The questions are kind of tough but lame. How about: "What about the team has improved in Mark Fox's four year?" "Including the injured players, where do you see the talent level compared to other Pac12 teams?" "How would you rate Fox's recruiting since he has been here?" "Do you think Fox is getting everything out of the talent that he has?" "Do you know where the team is ranked according to any rating system like Kenpom or Sagarin?" "Do you think Cal should lose to schools that pay 10-20% of the salary that you pay to Mark Fox?" "Any second thoughts on giving Fox a covid extension?" I could go on and on.

I am so tired of covid being used as an excuse for everything

Not just for bb, but just a general excuse for everything

"[Attendance is] a concern. The success of the team helps, but way more important than that is all the other things we have to do as a department to make the fan experience special."

I found this passage to be the most infuriating because Knowlton has personally done everything in his power to totally and completely destroy the fan experience at both Haas and CMS. No replays. No stats. Event staff harassing you when you enter and kicking you out moments after the games end. Restricted gates. Terrible concessions. Cleaning crews literally waiting in the stairwells during the game ready to pounce the moment it ends. No cheerleaders. No dance team. No postgame band performances. Minimal in-game band performances. Zero follow-up on complaints. The list goes on. It is indisputably the worst in-person fan accommodation I've ever experienced, and all of it is totally within his power to fix, except he intentionally implemented many of these as changes. It's horrible. I would never go if I wasn't a Cal grad, and can barely tolerate it very occasionally even though I am. I honestly don't know if I will ever set foot inside Haas ever again, and I was a 30 year season ticket holder prior to this.

It's impossible for me to adequately articulate how low my opinion is of Knowlton and Fox. They have made me do the unthinkable: actively root against my alma mater so that they will be forever branded with a winless season. Cal will eventually bounce back. These guys should at least have to live with the knowledge of this legacy while they laugh and count their money.

agree that quote is amazingly horrible

but you left off the worst thing they did to kill Haas. Ruined the student sideline seats for a money grab (which failed miserably by the way)

Thanks, Jeff Faurado, for once again exposing the complete incompetence of Jim Knowlton. Unfortunately, with Carol Christ in place, there is apparently no solution.

The whole damn lot of them need to go. Just move cal football and basketball under outside leadership like CALegends.

It sounds like attendance and the game experience is as sad as the NIT game against Cal State Bakersfield, you know, the game where Cuonzo caught a cab to the airport with 5 minutes left in the game, leaving behind broken hearts, Ivan Rabb's draft status in ruins, a basketball program in shambles and 4 cases of empty water bottles.

*I will, however, continue to buy season tickets in light of the fact that my total tuition cost for a 4 year education at Cal was less than $3000.

You are comparing Fox's 0-11 to Cuonzo's 21-13 with an NIT loss to the 25-10 (12-2) WAC Champion (#3 defense in the country that year)?

I think you had to engage in some gymnastics to expand my comparison of recent Haas game attendance to a single NIT game crowd into a comparison of this season to Cuonzo's last season with Cal.

Also, I'm pretty sure Charlie Moore, who was probably our best player that year, didn't play in the game, so we weren't near full strength.

Ivan was our best player and also didn't play, but i know what you mean and agree

i remember Martin just gave the ball to "1 on 4" coleman to score

Limp and pathetic leadership demonstrated still again. Perhaps he has a short list of stellar candidates and is heroically acting quietly behind the scenes to bring off a dramatic change (in which case I apologize). But we really have been given no reason to believe this could happen.

I don't think Fox will be fired this year, certainly not mid season. If we lose every game with all the injured players back maybe Knowlton will change his mind.

Upon reflectiion I am not sure he failed the interview. Probably bad to even agree to it. What he said pisses off the most diehard fans. But if he goes further than he fuels the story that Fox is a deadman walking (which we all know he is). Lose - lose.

This is not to defend JK. He really is horrible. But I would have advised against doing the interview.

Yeah I have no idea what the purpose of it was either. Honestly I assume it was just to appease Farudo and keep him at bay, not that any reporter ever asks any real questions or does any real investigative work with regard to Cal athletics. I have no doubt there are real skeletons in the closet if anyone cared to do the work to look. Just look what Goggles uncovered about the contract terms with a few simple CPRA requests.

I will say this about the quote I highlighted: We now have it in writing directly from the AD that not only do the "other things" we complain about matter, they acknowledge they are MORE IMPORTANT than wins and losses. No more bull***** Feet to the fire. MAKE POSITIVE CHANGES NOW!!!

I kind of agree. The interview doesn't bother me. It was a lot of AD speak meaning nothing. No AD is going to throw the coach under the bus. At that point, you might as well fire him. I would also point out that if you really read it, he basically gave a glorified "no comment" to whether a mid season firing could be positive.

Quote:

I'm not saying I do see an upside or I don't see an upside. All I'm saying is I'm working with Mark, working with the program and giving them a chance to get a couple of these players back and to get that opportunity to put some wins under their belt.
That is a man who on the one hand is not going to throw the coach under the bus until he is ready to, but on the other is not committing to seeing things through to the end of the season. More than I'd have thought we'd get. People should be happy with the answer.

What I'm upset with is not the interview, but everything that has gotten us here. Eyes on the prize.

But if we want to talk about failed quotes, I'd go with this from Mark Fox at his first press conference (that was repeated in the article):

Quote:

I don't want to put a ceiling on what we can achieve. I really don't," Fox said on that Monday morning. "I want to get better right now. I want to get better next next year. I want to keep climbing until we think maybe it's the top.
I'm going to parse words here, but I think it is important parsing. Most people would say "I want to keep climibing until we reach the top". Because, there is only one top. He said "until we think maybe it's the top". In other words, I don't want to put a ceiling on this now. I want to keep getting better until we hit our ceiling. Until we get to a point and we look around and say "yeah, I think maybe this is as good as it gets for us". Whether it was intentional or Freudian, that was a major hedge and a clear indication that he did not see the actual top as being in the cards.

They scheduled a basketball game on a Friday night at the same time as the Big Game Bonfire Rally. Not before, at the same time. Students, the band, cheerleaders (we finally had them) had to choose.

That is just emblematic of an athletic department that is grossly incompetent and devoid of people who have any knowledge of Cal traditions.

For at least the past 15 years, there has been a basketball game the Friday before Big Game. Typically it has been a women's game, but that doesn't change that stat.

Also for the record, the Band usually splits into 4 that night. 2 would deal with parties and events throughout the Bay Area (one set for the East Bay, one for the Peninsula), one would go to the game, and the last and largest group, the entire freshman cohort with some older members, was tasked with going to Bonfire and covering any other campus events.

If we're going to complain, let's not start acting like some of these things aren't new.

That said, the shirt giveaway was also a disaster because of the size - 90% of them were Smalls and the other 10% were Mediums. They didn't even get a reasonable size for a majority of the student body.
