Who do people think would be on a list of potential Bear coaches?

Todd Bozeman. Proven winner in Pac10, great recruiter, learned from his mistakes.

At this point, to me it's a total crapshoot. I guess on balance, I'd prefer someone younger, like Russell Turner, as opposed to Ben Howland or one of the other retreads. I'm not sure it makes much difference, since I think if that coach wins here, even a little, they're probably gone to greener pastures, if that's what happens with Martin. We probably should have just hired Decuire for program continuity, since the message being sent is that we can't hold on to a coach that has even modest success, and therefore you need to try and establish some sort of line of succession.

Turner is actually 46....older than Cuonzo.

Right, but he hasn't been in a Power 5 job, or at a prominent mid-major. I don't think any Power 5 coaches are going to be an option this time, unless it's someone that has not won elsewhere who we think for some reason can win at Cal. He's basically the same age as Cuonzo, who turns 46 in September.

I'd take a good look at Dennis Gates who is highly regarded in the ACC and at FSU. Stellar recruiter.

Maybe a coach from the Bo Ryan tree. Barry Alvarez seem to make all the right coaching hires.

Definitely worth a look. That would be sort of akin to the Wilcox hire in football, which is basically where I think we're at based on the resources/desire available. I'm assuming he could develop recruiting contacts here, based on having played at Cal.

I like that. At least we wouldn't have to worry about him looking elsewhere. I'd take Gates over Haase any day of the week.

Theo was who I wanted to replace Cuonzo. But I also thought Cuonzo wouldn't be gone for another 5-10 years or so. Theo isn't anywhere near ready yet. But I really like that Theo has had a chance to learn from Kerr and Walton.

That CSU Bakersfield coach is looking pretty good. Kicked Martin's behind twice at Haas.

I hope the Bozeman suggestion was a joke, because it should be.

What about.... Mitch Henderson. Was a longtime assistant at Northwestern, has been at Princenton since 2011.

Probably have to kick the tires on him. The serious downside is his capacity to recruit kids whose first choice is the NBA. In the end, to compete in the Pac-12 at the upper 1/3 you HAVE to have kids that can smell the draft. You CAN"T build a consistently winning program without them. The question for Amarker is does he know how to recruit and then coach those kinds of kids. He will have to answer that one - especially to the families of recruits.

Gates brother is an assistant at Northwestern now.

Sounds good to bring both Gates bros in.

Henderson has the same issues as Amaker. He not only has only coached at Princeton, but played there as well. So far, of the names offered, I like Dennis Gates the best. Conventional wisdom would have him go to a mid-major as a head coach before coming here, but I think the economics of the thing force us to go outside the box, which hiring Gates from the assistant ranks would do. he's been an assistant in one form or another for more than 10 years, so he's probably ready for a head job. He also strikes me as someone who might be willing to accept an Xs-and-Os assistant to develop an offense.

Would call Few and Tony Bennett first.

Bryce Drew and Tom Crean next, followed by Gates, Turner, and Amaker.

Like Cuonzo, but insane for Mizzou to have him at the top of their list and pay him that much. Just jacked up the price for the Illinois job and will need a bigger splash than Cuonzo.

Please, Few is not leaving unless he is paid a boatload. Tony Bennett? Why would come all the way back out here when he is settled in at Virginia, and can dominate the ACC once the old vanguard (Coach K, Roy Williams, Rick Pitino and Jim Boeheim) leave?

Tom Crean would be a good hire but he will get offers elsewhere should Indiana can him.

Whoever we get, we need facilities asap.

Few and Bennett have better situations where they're at. So does Drew, who is making more than $2 million a year at Vanderbilt. Crean makes more than $3 million. Please. I've commented on Gates, Turner and Amaker.

Hopefully they are names not speculated on here as it will indicate Williams knows what he is doing

Wouldn't expect Few or Bennett and Drew or Crean would be longshots, but looks Mizzou aimed low and overpaid. Be OK with Gates or Turner.

If we're talking longshots, we might as give J-Kidd a call and see how much he likes the NBA grind and living in Milwaukee.

Too bad he makes $6 million a year otherwise we could talk a reasonable hometown discount.

What NBA grind? They basically have the entire summer off, since there's no recruiting involved. In fact, a number of pro coaches have been quoted recently as saying they'd never go back to college coaching if they had a choice.

Since we got one Aussie coming in maybe we could get a pipeline to others!

Jason Kidd does usually, Steve Kerr on the other hand is possibly coaching into June every year. Not having to worry about personnel management is a nice benefit though.

And as just mentioned, get Randy Bennett now.

Cal's not hiring anyone without a degree. Cuonzo's now making more than Shaka ($3.5M vs 2.8M).

+1. I'd take the Sherriff in a New York minute. And if he brings his brother then so much the better. Maybe add Theo too.

If Bennett can't beat Gonzaga, what's the basis for thinking he can beat Arizona or Oregon? I just don't get it, other than he's the obvious local name. It's not clear to me that Cal is more attractive to recruit for than St. Mary's and may be tougher, given the academic standards. I'd rather go for someone outside the box, like Gates, to see if we can somehow break out of miasma we're in.

I'd go with a young mid major coach or a young high major assistant. Both of whom need to be able to recruit and Cal needs to belly up to the bar and build a practice facility as nice as what they built the swim team.

Do you mean this year's Gonzaga, or Gonzaga in general? It's not like Saint Mary's is plucking ESPN Top 100 recruits or future NBA draft picks, half the roster is Australian, and the others are in-state guys who would not be given a chance at a Power 5 program. Bennett would have gotten a lot more out of our team this year than Martin.

Eric Musselman would be my choice. He has NBA experience, comes from a basketball family (he has been coaching since he was 23). And he lives in the east bay.

I watch a lot of Mountain West Basketball and what he has done at UNR is amazing.

Yes. Should be in top 3. Can he recruit?
