Kelly had a 20+ game earlier in the season but against smaller post player. The speculation was he could not score over taller players osu big men are not very good but they were tall

Lets hope he continues his dominating play as we go on the road.
Go Bears!

I'm seeing 29 points 15 rebounds 1 assist 1 steal 2 blocks.

11 of 16 from the floor (1 of 2 from 3) and 6 of 7 from the line.

Only one assist?!? To the bench!

j/k, of course. Up until about ten minutes into this game, we have been consistently underutilizing Andre Kelly. Okay, he won't be able to go 29 and 15 against taller, better competition, but still: He's one of our few guys that can play.

I'm in on Andre. The very early returns indicate a fan-love ranking of freshmen as follows:

Kelly
Bradley (very close second)
Gordon (tied for close third)
Vanover (tied with Gordon)

*I like this class!

Will rank again before conference play.
The love for Vanover is rapidly increasing.

That is on you to start that Official Fan Club thread!

Big C, you should still be ashamed of yourself for that post.

Is Vanover a star yet in Arkansas? Could have been at Cal.

I've been advocating Kelly take that 12-16 footer for ... forever

I've also advocated he take the open 3 as he has good form on his shot, and it will open up his offense

Exhibit A: game tonight

He averaged 6 points and 4 boards last year and so far this year (when teams play a lot of stiffs), he is 10/4.
Stats hardly worth basically having 4 guys on defense when he is in.

Me too. Absolutely. He has a good-looking stroke/touch. Give this guy the green light! It's not like we have many other scorers.

This is now Andre Kelly's team. Offense goes through him please. He was reminding of me Sean Lampley last night.

I have a soft spot in my Golden Bear heart for football and basketball players who commit to Cal, honor their commitment, stay through graduation and get better every year. Following and rooting for guys that do that has been, traditionally, one of my biggest joys as a Cal fan.

Go Bears! Go Andre Kelly!

I also met Grant after a game as Haas. He was hanging out talking to some fans who stayed after. My son, who was just starting to take basketball seriously, was so excited to meet him. He chatted for a few minutes and then struck up a conversation with another fan. We all left the building. Grant walked for blocks talking to that guy.
Another great representative of CAL!

As somebody who has griped about Kelly's fitness, it was great to see him play such a strong game (admittedly, I watched the abbreviated replay). This is the guy who used to run out of gas at the 6 minute point of the first half. But he came into this season lean and fit and as a result played 41 minutes yesterday and was hitting big shots and pulling down rebounds in that second OT. It still remains to be seen how he does against an athletic big man, which has been has downfall in the past. But his footwork is great, and his shot is looking pretty reliable out to 15 feet, so defenders can't just sag on him. When watching him as a freshman, I thought, "Kelly can be another Markhuri Sanders-Frison" and now he's doing it.

Likewise, Anticevich has developed a bit of a mid-range game, even making one or two shots off his dribble, something that never happened in the past.

I'm still not too impressed with the overall offense. The guys run their sets but seemingly with no real intent. Even when screeners correctly roll to the hoop, they never see the ball. This happened to Anticevich and Kelly a couple of times. And once again, no back-door plays against over-playing defenders.

I liked Markhuri but Kelly is much better. He's doing much more than that..

Kelly has made incremental progress every year, both on his game and his S&C. We always want it to go faster, but it isn't always that way.

In my eyes Kelly is a good example of a player who is developing. I think Fox deserves some of the credit, as he does with Paris Austin's development.

No question, it cuts both ways. IIRC. Kelly was one of the guys that was going to transfer if Wyking was retained for a third year.

Maybe, but he should have been playing him more the last two years also.

Yep, Kelly must have eaten too many waffles during the pandemic summer of 2020. I put some of that blame on Fox - once the state of the pandemic was understood, he should have given all his players customized conditioning programs for the off-season that they could do outdoors and followed up weekly with them so they knew he meant business. He has assistants and only has to keep track of 15 guys - certainly doable.

Exactly - Fox wanted to play him more, but said - He gets exhausted after 5-6 minutes and then commits reach in and slow footwork fouls. Staff clearly wanted to play him more, but with the Pandemic last summer/season, was not able to monitor him as much and He and DJ came in plus several pounds. When a consistent off season workout/monitoring program was in place, Kelly became much more dedicated on workouts/quality of food intake.

They did - (see another post) but not feasible to be 100% effective with the isolation going on. Players can and do get complacent, despite phone calls/programs to follow etc. This season completely different, as the staff was able to be there and work with the players one on one and monitor live, the diets and workouts.

Hey, this is an Andre Kelly Fan club thread. You can start the Mark Fox Fan Club thread

Kelly's lack of minutes in previous years mostly stems from Fox starting others and giving starter's minutes to them accordingly.

Most of Kelly's fouls stem from being undersized at the center position, battling inside with taller players.

The obsession with his physic reminds me of Moneyball. It was why Charles Barkley was so underrated coming up. Good thing Monty didn't worry about that with Sanders-Frison.

He was our most effective player per minute last year. If fatigue had an effect on his play, it was not enough to effect his numbers. Keep playing him until his marginal value is equal to the guy you are playing instead.

In general, I think Fox plays, even used to start, Lars (and to a lesser extent, Thorpe) for reasons other than Kelly's "fatigue" such as matching up with taller centers as for player development.

Keep feeding Andre Kelly!
