This stroll down memory lane convinces more than ever that EricBear, even though not on the payroll anymore, needs to be invited back for gratuitous in game comments.

Whaddaaayaa mean "not on the payroll anymore?" Did he leave us? Was he fired? I sure hope not. He brought insight and and sanity to the board.

So the information that we were in negotiations in March (again, too soon) WAS leaked, the fanbase freaks out and the AD went ahead anyway.

Again, I hope Knowlton gets lucky on this one.

People used to have a lot more hope that basketball might get better. Now, I think that there might be 10, maybe 20 people who are not employed by the university and who are not family of players who actually care about men's basketball at Cal.

What do you call the 2000 that attend every game? I was at every game and saw them.i guess you are hoping there was only 10. Sorry to disappoint you.

I wouldn't know. I haven't been to a game since we hired Fox.

Ie not enough to fill Harmon.

According to the official site attendance with Cuonzo as coach in 2015-2016 averaged 10,183 per game.

That was fun. I went to a lot of games when we had Brown. That was fun team to watch.

You and many more of us. The consensus seemed to be: W. T. F. ?

Actually there was a BI poll right after Fox was hired. It got 625 responses:
45% positive (2 choices)
28% neutral
27% negative (2 choices)

Compare that to the current poll.

Wow that's surprising. Wouldn't have guessed that nearly half of the remaining fanbase at that time thought Fox was a good hire. It couldn't have been any more obvious to me that he was a horrible hire.

Wow this was called very early. When your message board fans can predict the outcome better than your AD and Chancellor, you know we have a big problem.

You want to go back and look at what my short list looked like?

Kidd
Nate oats
TJ otzelberger
Musselman
Gates

Go look and and see how they've done the last three years. And all were reasonably gettable with a competent AD

I don't say this to look smart. I know next to nothing about college basketball coaches. And yet, my completely free Google search was superior to knowltons completely useless (but I'm sure very expensive) search firm.

I wonder if the search firm came up with more than one name. If so, did Knowlton consider the others?

You are far more knowledgeable about basketball than Knowlton plus you actually want Cal to succeed as apposed to just trying to preserve your $900,000 a year salary by CYA.

Re-reading this thread was so depressing.

What's more amazing to me is just three years later, how completely dead the program is. At least when Wyking was fired there was some talent in the program, some hope that the right coach could take that talent and do what Wyking could not. Three years later, there is a cone of complete silence around the program, and the recruiting has fallen to levels not seen at Cal in a long time (maybe ever?). Again, I would have thought that this was the definition of AD malpractice if we weren't watching the AD make these moves with the full support of the administration.

The AD even got an unprecedented 7 year extension after the worst combined results in the revenue sports in decades.

This is what gives me little to no hope for the future. Does anyone have any idea what warranted an extension? What were the positive changes that he brought?

C'mon guys, if we get a better coach, they do a little roster shuffling and this program could be turned around in two years. Now, will that actually happen? Well, it might! Let's say we get a new coach in two weeks, or 54 weeks. Let's say Knowlton gets some "guidance" this time around, or even just gets lucky... Heck, it could happen!

This type of decision may end up as my master's thesis for my Sports Analytics and Sports Management Program.

Why AD's use search firms is beyond me. Sure studies show that collaborative work is more productive, but when the research doesn't understand the principles of what makes a great hire the collaborative process is rendered useless.

I'll be done in 2020 so if you folks want an AD with vision, and actual intuition how to make these choices then I'll be ready to push Cal forward.

Wish we could hire you. Where are you working now?

Musselman just added his 3rd 5-star recruit for his 2022 class...

All you people who still go to the games, like OskiDunker, are not helping the problem...

I guess I'm not helping the problem, either. Basically, I'm too self-centered. Before every game, I sort of ask myself if I feel like going or not. If the answer is "yes", I go. I never ask myself if I'm helping the problem, only if I want to go to the game. California Basketball probably needs less people like me, who aren't truly interested in helping the problem and only want to satisfy their selfish desires to watch a Cal game. I'm almost down there with our current and previous ADs and coaches when it comes to holding Cal back because I "didn't help the problem" about a dozen times this past season. What chance will we ever have to win with guys like me around? What's worse is that there are hundreds of us. Talk about your obstacles to winning!

We are deeper into Cal basketball than the details of any company whose stock we might purchase. I just wish we had an AD who at least shared our knowledge and passion for Cal athletics. I get the sense he cares more about his stock portfolio.

I think there was one year Kyle Campanelli may have Cal's only recruit - or "best" recruit. I think Bozeman's last year he had only one recruit. But, even in the depths of the Dick years, there was hope (and pizza/beer at the Come Back Inn when Caselli was on the team and the Bears won a home game).
